TitleSedimentation and Sediment Transport : Proceedings of the Symposium held in Monte Verit??, Switzerland, from September 2nd ??? to September 6th, 2002
Author(s)Gyr, A;Kinzelbach, Wolfgang
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionX, 271 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIt is evident, that for a number of ecological and technical problems in rivers and lakes a better knowledge of sediment transport and sedimentation is needed together with the ability to predict and simulate sediment behaviour. On the other hand, a stagnation of research in these topics could be observed in the last decades. At the Symposium an attempt was made to present new results in mathematics and natural sciences relevant for the sediment problem. New strategies were discussed to tackle the complexity of the problem. Basic theoretical research and laboratory experiments alone are incomplete without a feedback from field observations and measurements. For that reason well-known researchers from both basic and engineering sciences were invited. Turbulence, non-local phenomena, stability, interaction, feedback systems, self-organization, two-phase flow and chaotic processes, numerical simulations as well as measurement techniques and field results were the keywords of the Symposium. This proceedings are a good source for those interested in the state of the art

TitleConstructal Law and the Unifying Principle of Design
Author(s)Rocha, Luiz A.O;Lorente, Sylvie;Bejan, Adrian
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2013.
DescriptionXIV, 330 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDesign happens everywhere, whether in animate objects (e.g., dendritic lung structures, bacterial colonies, and corals), inanimate patterns (river basins, beach slope, and dendritic crystals), social dynamics (pedestrian traffic flows), or engineered systems (heat dissipation in electronic circuitry). This ???design in nature??? often takes on remarkably similar patterns, which can be explained under one unifying Constructal Law. This book explores the unifying power of the Constructal Law and its applications in all domains of design generation and evolution, ranging from biology and geophysics to globalization, energy, sustainability, and security.?? The Constructal Law accounts for the universal tendency of flow systems to morph into evolving configurations that provide greater and easier access over time. The Constructal Law resolves the many and contradictory ad hoc statements of ???optimality???, end design, and destiny in nature, such as minimum and maximum entropy production and minimum and maximum flow resistance, and also explains the designs that are observed and copied in biomimetics. Constructal Law and the Unifying Principle of Design covers the fundamentals of Constructal Theory and Design, as well as presenting a variety of state-of-the-art applications. Experts from the biological, physical and social sciences demonstrate the unification of all design phenomena in nature, and apply this knowledge to novel designs in modern engineering, such as vascularization for self-healing and self-cooling materials for aircraft, and tree fins and cavities for heat transfer enhancement. ?? ?????????????????? Captures a world-wide movement toward design as science ?????????????????? Defines the place of the Constructal Law in physics and thermodynamics ?????????????????? Features an interdisciplinary approach that spans physics, biology, engineering and the social sciences ?????????????????? Demonstrates that a single law of physics governs all the phenomena of design in nature

TitleDynamics of the Magnetosphere : Proceedings of the A.G.U. Chapman Conference ???Magnetospheric Substorms and Related Plasma Processes??? held at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Los Alamos, N.M., U.S.A. October 9???13, 1978
Author(s)Akasofu, Syun-Ichi
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1980.
Description657 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Los Alamos Chapman Conference on Magnetospheric Substorms and Related Plasma Processes can be considered the fourth in a series devoted to magnetospheric substorms, after the Moscow (1971), Houston (1972), and Bryce Mountain (1974) meetings. The main motivation for organizing the Los Alamos Conference was that magnetospheric substorm studies have advanced enough to the point of bringing experimenters, analysts and theorists together to discuss major substorm problems with special emphasis on theoretical interpretations in terms of plasma processes. In spite of an extremely heavy schedule from 8:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., every session was conducted in an enjoyable and spirited atmosphere. In fact, during one of the afternoons that we had put aside for relaxation, John Winckler led a group of the attendees in a climb to the ceremonial cave of a prehistoric Indian ruin at Bandelier National Monument, near Los Alamos under a crystal blue sky and a bright New Mexico sun. There, they danced as the former dwellers of the pueblo had, perhaps as an impromptu evocation of a magnetospheric event

TitleModeling Density-Driven Flow in Porous Media : Principles, Numerics, Software
Author(s)Holzbecher, Ekkehard O
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXVII, 286 p. 117 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteModeling of flow and transport in groundwater has become an important focus of scientific research in recent years. Most contributions to this subject deal with flow situations, where density and viscosity changes in the fluid are neglected. This restriction may not always be justified. The models presented in the book demonstrate immpressingly that the flow pattern may be completely different when density changes are taken into account. The main applications of the models are: thermal and saline convection, geothermal flow, saltwater intrusion, flow through salt formations etc. This book not only presents basic theory, but the reader can also test his knowledge by applying the included software and can set up own models

TitlePlanetary surface processes
Author(s)H. Jay Melosh
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2011.
Descriptionxix, 500p.
Series(Cambridge Planetary Science)
Abstract NotePlanetary Surface Processes is the first advanced textbook to cover the full range of geologic processes that shape the surfaces of planetary-scale bodies. Using a modern, quantitative approach, this book reconsiders geologic processes outside the traditional terrestrial context. It highlights processes that are contingent upon Earth's unique circumstances and processes that are universal. For example, it shows explicitly that equations predicting the velocity of a river are dependent on gravity: traditional geomorphology textbooks fail to take this into account. This textbook is a one-stop source of information on planetary surface processes, providing readers with the necessary background to interpret new data from NASA, ESA and other space missions. Based on a course taught by the author at the University of Arizona for 25 years, it is aimed at advanced students, and is also an invaluable resource for researchers, professional planetary scientists and space-mission engineers.
