Author(s) | Pijpers, F.P;Christensen-Dalsgaard, J??rgen;Rosenthal, C.S |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997. |
Description | VII, 315 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the reviews and poster papers presented at the workshop Solar Convection and Oscillations and their Relationship: SCORe '96, held in Arhus, Denmark, May 27 - 31, 1996. The aim of this workshop was to bring together experts in the fields of convection and helioseismology, and to stimulate collaborations and joint research. The participation to this workshop was purposely kept limited in order to provide optimal conditions for informal discussions. In autumn of 199,5 the long-awaited GONG network of solar telescopes became fully operational and the first data already show significant improvement over existing datasets on solar oscillations. Furthermore, in December of 1995 the satellite SOHO was launched which, together with GONG, provides a major step forward in both the quantity and the quality of available solar oscillation data. It is with this in mind that we decided to organize the workshop to prepare for the optimal use of this wealth of data, with which to deepen our understanding of solar structure and specifically, of one of the longest-standing problems in solar and stellar modelling: the treatment of convection |

Title | Identification of Seismic Sources ??? Earthquake or Underground Explosion : Proceedings of the NATO Advance Study Institute held at Voksen??sen, Oslo, Norway, September 8???18, 1980 |
Author(s) | Husebye, Eystein S;Mykkelveit, S |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1981. |
Description | 888 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The subject of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was seismic monitoring under a nuclear test ban - an application of scienti?? fic knowledge and modern technology for a political purpose. The international political objective of a comprehensive nuclear test ban provided in turn the motivation for our technical and scientific discussions. In order to obtain a historical perspec?? tive on the progress of the work towards a comprehensive test-ban treaty (CTB), it is necessary to go back to 1958, when a confer?? ence of scientific experts in Geneva made the first steps toward an international seismic monitoring system. However, agreement on actual capabilities of a monitoring system for verifying compliance with such a treaty was not achieved, and thus the conference did not lead to immediate political results. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space and under the seas, renewed interest in the seismological verification of a CTB took place. A number of countries initiated large-scale research efforts toward detecting and identifying underground nuclear explosions, and it was in this context that the large?? aperture seismic arrays NORSAR and LASA were established. This type of development resulted in excellent seismic data in digital form and was thus of great irnprotance to the seismological com?? munity |

Title | Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems |
Author(s) | Cazenave, Anny |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1986. |
Description | XIV, 330 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The idea for organl.zl.ng an Advanced Research Workshop entirely devoted to the Earth rotation was born in 1983 when Professor Raymond Hide suggested this topic to the special NATO panel of global transport mechanism in the Geosciences. Such a specialized meeting did not take place since the GEOP research conference on the rotation of the Earth and polar motion which was held at the Ohio State University (USA) in 1973. In the last ten years, highly precise measurements of the Earth's rotation parameters and new global geophysical data have become available allowing major advance to be made in the under?? standing of the various irregularities affecting the Earth's rotation. The aim of the workshop was to bring together scientists who have made important contributions in this field during the last decade both at the observational and geophysical interpretation levels. The confe?? rence was divided into four main topics. The first session was dedicated to the definition, implementation and maintenance of the terrestrial and celestial reference systems. A few critical points have been identified as requiring further improvements: (i) appro?? priate selection of terrestrial sites recognized for their long term stability, (ii) determination of the relationship between terrestrial and celestial references systems as well as between the various terrestrial ones, (iii) improvment of the theory of a rotating elastic earth (the recently adopted theory needs already some corrections') |

Title | Recent Evolution and Seismicity of the Mediterranean Region |
Author(s) | Boschi, E;Mantovani, E;Morelli, A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993. |
Description | XIX, 422 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Mediterranean is one of the most studied regions of the world. In spite of this, a considerable spread of opinions exists about the geodynamic evolution and the present tectonic setting of this zone. The difficulty in recognizing the driving mechanisms of deformation is due to a large extent to the complex distribution in space and time of tectonic events, to the high number of parameters involved in this problem and to the scarce possibility of carrying out quantitative estimates of the deformation implied by the various geodynamic hypotheses. However, we think that a great deal of the present ambiguity could be removed if there were more frequent and open discussions among the scientists who are working on this problem. The meeting ofERICE was organized to provide an opportunity in this sense. In making this effort, we were prompted by the conviction that each step towards the understanding of the Mediterranean evolution is of basic importance both for its scientific consequences and for the possibleimplicationsfor society. It is well known, for instance, that the knowledge ofongoing tectonic processes in a given region and of their connection with seismic activity may lead to the recognition of middle?? long term precursors of strong earthquakes. The few cases of tentative earthquake prediction in the world occurred where information on large scale seismotectonic behavior was available. This led to identify the zones prone to dangerous shocks, where observations of short-term earthquake precursors were then concentrated |

Title | Variability of Active Galaxies : Proceedings of a Workshop of the Sonderforschungsbereich 328 Held at Heidelberg, Germany, 3???5 September 1990 |
Author(s) | Duschl, Wolfgang J;Wagner, Stefan J;Camenzind, Max |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XII, 312 p. 56 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The enormous amounts of energy radiated from the active nuclei of galaxies vary on short time scales, and the emission regions are difficult to observe. To provide a complete understanding of these phenomena a wide variety of studies is presented in this volume. The contributions are broadly divided between line and continuum variability, with observational results, methodological approaches, and theoretical models accompanying each. The final part is devoted to the important aspect of propagation-induced variability |

Title | Plasma Instabilities and Nonlinear Effects |
Author(s) | Hasegawa, A |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1975. |
Description | XII, 220 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In recent years the significant progress in satellite-based observations of plasma states and associated electromagnetic phenomena in space has resulted in the accumulation of much evidence of various plasma instabilities. Today plasma instabilities are believed to be responsible for electromagnetic radiation as well as for many of the macroscopic dynamics of plasmas in space. Most students who begin to study plasma physics are intrigued by the unstable nature of plasmas compared with other states of matter; however, they often become frustrated because there are so many in?? stabilities. Such frustration explains in part why there is no textbook which treats this subject exclusively. A description of plasma instabilities in a systematic way is nontrivial and takes a pertinacious effort. This book is an attempt to provide a basic introduction on the subject and covers most of the important instabilities. However, the author must apologize for any omission of references to contributions of individuals who deserve more credit. The reader is assumed to have a general knowledge of plasma physics obtainable in an undergraduate course. The book is intended to be used as a reference text on the subject of plasma instabilities at the under?? graduate level as well as for a text in a special course in graduate school. Because the book is part of a series on physics and chemistry in space, emphasis is placed on plasma instabilities relevant in space plasmas |

Title | Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics |
Author(s) | Brekhovskikh, Leonid M;Lysanov, Yury P |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XII, 270 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | As man turns his attention from the overcrowded continents of this planet and explores the spaciousness of the ocean, the applications of ocean acoustics become increasingly numerous and important. This book pro- vides an up-to-date introduction to the theory of sound propagation in the ocean, with much new material having been added throughout the second edition. It includes both ray and wave treatments and considerable attention is paid to stochastic problems such as the scattering of sound at rough surfaces and random inhomogeneties. An introductory chapter that discusses the basic experimental data complements the following theoretical chapters |

Title | Geophysics, realism, and industry : how commercial interests shaped geophysical conceptions, 1900-1960 |
Author(s) | Aitor Anduaga |
Edition | First edition |
Description | 1 online resource : illustrations (black and white) |
Abstract Note | Did industry and commerce affect the concepts, values and epistemic foundations of different sciences? If so, how and to what extent? This book suggests that the most significant influence of industry on science in the two case studies treated here had to do with the issue of realism. Using wave propagation as the common thread, it simultaneously analyses the emergence of realist attitudes towards the entities of the ionosphere and of the Earth's crust. However, what led physicists and engineers to adopt realist attitudes? This book suggests that a new kind of realism - a realism of social and cultural origins - is the answer: a preliminary, entity realism responding to specific commercial and engineering interests, and a realism that was neither strictly instrumental nor exclusively operational |
