Author(s)Ting, Lu;Klein, Rupert
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionV, 222 p. 18 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is a comprehensive account of the asymptotic theory of slender vortices with diffusion cores. Addressed to both graduate students and researchers it describes the mathematical model and its numerical analysis. The asymptotic analysis involves two length and two time scales. Consistency conditions and time invariance of moments of vorticity are given and applied to numerical solutions. The authors also describe consistency conditions between the large circumferential and axial velocity in the core

TitlePolynomial Approximation of Differential Equations
Author(s)Funaro, Daniele
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionX, 305 p. 3 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is devoted to the analysis of approximate solution techniques for differential equations, based on classical orthogonal polynomials. These techniques are popularly known as spectral methods. In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in this subject. As a matter offact, spectral methods provide a competitive alternative to other standard approximation techniques, for a large variety of problems. Initial ap?? plications were concerned with the investigation of periodic solutions of boundary value problems using trigonometric polynomials. Subsequently, the analysis was extended to algebraic polynomials. Expansions in orthogonal basis functions were preferred, due to their high accuracy and flexibility in computations. The aim of this book is to present a preliminary mathematical background for be?? ginners who wish to study and perform numerical experiments, or who wish to improve their skill in order to tackle more specific applications. In addition, it furnishes a com?? prehensive collection of basic formulas and theorems that are useful for implementations at any level of complexity. We tried to maintain an elementary exposition so that no experience in functional analysis is required

TitleComputational Techniques for Fluid Dynamics : Specific Techniques for Different Flow Categories
Author(s)Fletcher, Clive A. J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionXI, 484 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAs indicated in Vol. 1, the purpose of this two-volume textbook is to pro?? vide students of engineering, science and applied mathematics with the spe?? cific techniques, and the framework to develop skill in using them, that have proven effective in the various branches of computational fluid dy?? namics Volume 1 describes both fundamental and general techniques that are relevant to all branches of fluid flow. This volume contains specific tech?? niques applicable to the different categories of engineering flow behaviour, many of which are also appropriate to convective heat transfer. The contents of Vol. 2 are suitable for specialised graduate courses in the engineering computational fluid dynamics (CFD) area and are also aimed at the established research worker or practitioner who has already gained some fundamental CFD background. It is assumed that the reader is famil?? iar with the contents of Vol. 1. The contents of Vol. 2 are arranged in the following way: Chapter 11 de?? velops and discusses the equations governing fluid flow and introduces the simpler flow categories for which specific computational techniques are considered in Chaps. 14-18. Most practical problems involve computational domain boundaries that do not conveniently coincide with coordinate lines. Consequently, in Chap. 12 the governing equations are expressed in generalised curvilinear coordinates for use in arbitrary computational domains. The corresponding problem of generating an interior grid is considered in Chap. 13

TitleAlgorithms for Continuous Optimization : The State of the Art
Author(s)Spedicato, E
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXV, 565 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Algorithms for continuous optimiza?? tion: the state of the art" was held September 5-18, 1993, at II Ciocco, Barga, Italy. It was attended by 75 students (among them many well known specialists in optimiza?? tion) from the following countries: Belgium, Brasil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA, Venezuela. The lectures were given by 17 well known specialists in the field, from Brasil, China, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA. Solving continuous optimization problems is a fundamental task in computational mathematics for applications in areas of engineering, economics, chemistry, biology and so on. Most real problems are nonlinear and can be of quite large size. Devel?? oping efficient algorithms for continuous optimization has been an important field of research in the last 30 years, with much additional impetus provided in the last decade by the availability of very fast and parallel computers. Techniques, like the simplex method, that were already considered fully developed thirty years ago have been thoroughly revised and enormously improved. The aim of this ASI was to present the state of the art in this field. While not all important aspects could be covered in the fifty hours of lectures (for instance multiob?? jective optimization had to be skipped), we believe that most important topics were presented, many of them by scientists who greatly contributed to their development

TitleBoundary Value Problems in Linear Viscoelasticity
Author(s)Golden, John M;Graham, George A.C
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionXIV, 266 p. 17 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe classical theories of Linear Elasticity and Newtonian Fluids, though trium?? phantly elegant as mathematical structures, do not adequately describe the defor?? mation and flow of most real materials. Attempts to characterize the behaviour of real materials under the action of external forces gave rise to the science of Rheology. Early rheological studies isolated the phenomena now labelled as viscoelastic. Weber (1835, 1841), researching the behaviour of silk threats under load, noted an instantaneous extension, followed by a further extension over a long period of time. On removal of the load, the original length was eventually recovered. He also deduced that the phenomena of stress relaxation and damping of vibrations should occur. Later investigators showed that similar effects may be observed in other materials. The German school referred to these as "Elastische Nachwirkung" or "the elastic aftereffect" while the British school, including Lord Kelvin, spoke ofthe "viscosityofsolids". The universal adoption of the term "Viscoelasticity", intended to convey behaviour combining proper?? ties both of a viscous liquid and an elastic solid, is of recent origin, not being used for example by Love (1934), though Alfrey (1948) uses it in the context of polymers. The earliest attempts at mathematically modelling viscoelastic behaviour were those of Maxwell (1867) (actually in the context of his work on gases; he used this model for calculating the viscosity of a gas) and Meyer (1874)

TitleOptimal Shape Design for Elliptic Systems
Author(s)Pironneau, O
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984.
DescriptionXII, 168 p. 29 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe study of optimal shape design can be arrived at by asking the following question: "What is the best shape for a physical system?" This book is an applications-oriented study of such physical systems; in particular, those which can be described by an elliptic partial differential equation and where the shape is found by the minimum of a single criterion function. There are many problems of this type in high-technology industries. In fact, most numerical simulations of physical systems are solved not to gain better understanding of the phenomena but to obtain better control and design. Problems of this type are described in Chapter 2. Traditionally, optimal shape design has been treated as a branch of the calculus of variations and more specifically of optimal control. This subject interfaces with no less than four fields: optimization, optimal control, partial differential equations (PDEs), and their numerical solutions-this is the most difficult aspect of the subject. Each of these fields is reviewed briefly: PDEs (Chapter 1), optimization (Chapter 4), optimal control (Chapter 5), and numerical methods (Chapters 1 and 4)

TitleComputational Nuclear Physics 1 : Nuclear Structure
Author(s)Langanke, K;Maruhn, Joachim;Koonin, S.E
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXII, 209 p. 6 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteA variety of standard problems in theoretical nuclear-structure physics is addressed by the well-documented computer codes presented in this book. Most of these codes were available up to now only through personal contact. The subject matter ranges from microscopic models (the shell, Skyrme-Hartree-Fock, and cranked Nilsson models) through collective excitations (RPA, IBA, and geometric model) to the relativistic impulse approximation, three-body calculations, variational Monte Carlo methods, and electron scattering. The 5 1/4'' high-density floppy disk that comes with the book contains the FORTRAN codes of the problems that are tackled in each of the ten chapters. In the text, the precise theoretical foundations and motivations of each model or method are discussed together with the numerical methods employed. Instructions for the use of each code, and how to adapt them to local compilers and/or operating systems if necessary, are included

TitleNumerical Integration : Recent Developments, Software and Applications
Author(s)Espelid, T.O;Genz, Alan
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
DescriptionXII, 367 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains refereed papers and extended abstracts of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled 'Numerical Integration: Recent Develop?? ments, Software and Applications', held at the University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway, June 17-21,1991. The Workshop was attended by thirty-eight scientists. A total of eight NATO countries were represented. Eleven invited lectures and twenty-three contributed lectures were presented, of which twenty-five appear in full in this volume, together with three extended abstracts and one note. The main focus of the workshop was to survey recent progress in the theory of methods for the calculation of integrals and show how the theoretical results have been used in software development and in practical applications. The papers in this volume fall into four broad categories: numerical integration rules, numerical integration error analysis, numerical integration applications and numerical integration algorithms and software. It is five years since the last workshop of this nature was held, at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, in 1986. Recent theoretical developments have mostly occurred in the area of integration rule construction. For polynomial integrating rules, invariant theory and ideal theory have been used to provide lower bounds on the numbers of points for different types of multidimensional rules, and to help in structuring the nonlinear systems which must be solved to determine the points and weights for the rules. Many new optimal or near optimal rules have been found for a variety of integration regions using these techniques
