TitleAnatomy and Physiology of the Circulatory and Ventilatory Systems
Author(s)Thiriet, Marc
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2014.
DescriptionXV, 585 p. 75 illus., 25 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteTogether, the volumes in this series present all of the data needed at various length scales for a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulation of flows in the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, especially multiscale modeling and coupled simulations. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are tightly coupled, as their primary function is to supply oxygen to, and remove carbon dioxide from, the body's cells. Because physiological conduits have deformable and reactive walls, macroscopic flow behavior and prediction must be coupled to nano- and microscopic events in a corrector scheme of regulated mechanism. Therefore, investigation of flows of blood and air in physiological conduits requires an understanding of the biology, chemistry, and physics of these systems, together with the mathematical tools to describe their functioning in quantitative terms. The present volume focuses on macroscopic aspects of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in normal conditions, i.e., anatomy and physiology, as well as the acquisition and processing of medical images and physiological signals. Reviews the anatomy and physiology of blood circulation and the body's ventilation Reviews biological data for a better understanding of macroscopic scale processes Describes the signals and images that are used to explore system function and as input data for computations

TitleCell and Tissue Organization in the Circulatory and Ventilatory Systems
Author(s)Thiriet, Marc
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2011.
DescriptionXII, 736 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe volumes in this authoritative series present a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulation of flows in the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, especially multiscale modeling and coupled simulations. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are tightly coupled, as their primary function is to supply oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the body's cells. Because physiological conduits have deformable and reactive walls, macroscopic flow behavior and prediction must be coupled to nano- and microscopic events in a corrector scheme of regulated mechanisms. Therefore, investigation of flows of blood and air in physiological conduits requires an understanding of the biology, chemistry, and physics of these systems together with the mathematical tools to describe their functioning. The present volume is devoted to cellular events that allow adaptation to environmental conditions, particularly mechanotransduction. It begins with cell organization and a survey of cell types in the vasculature and respiratory tract. It then addresses cell structure and functions, especially in interactions with adjoining cells and matrix. Describes cell types, functions, and fate in the regulated activities of the circulatory and respiratory systems Presents applications of mechanics and mathematics for an understanding and prediction of function in health and disease Integrates biology, chemistry, and physics for a multidisciplinary understanding of physiological flows

TitleSignaling at the Cell Surface in the Circulatory and Ventilatory Systems
Author(s)Thiriet, Marc
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2012.
DescriptionXV, 982 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe volumes in this authoritative series present a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulation of flows in the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, especially multiscale modeling and coupled simulations. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are tightly coupled, as their primary function is to supply oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the body's cells. Because physiological conduits have deformable and reactive walls, macroscopic flow behavior and prediction must be coupled to nano- and microscopic events in a corrector scheme of regulated mechanisms when the vessel lumen caliber varies markedly. Therefore, investigation of flows of blood and air in physiological conduits requires an understanding of the biology, chemistry, and physics of these systems together with the mathematical tools to describe their functioning. Volume 3 is devoted to the set of mediators of the cell surface, especially ion and molecular carriers and catalytic receptors that, once liganded and activated, initiate signal transduction pathways. Intracellular cascades of chemical reactions trigger the release of substances stored in cellular organelles and/or gene transcription and protein synthesis. Primary mediators are included in models of regulated cellular processes, but multiple secondary signaling components are discarded to allow simple, representative modeling and to manage their inverse problems. Reviews signaling pathways in the regulation of circulatory and respiratory function Describes ion and molecular carriers and receptors Integrates biology, chemistry, and physics for a multidisciplinary understanding of physiological flows

TitleTissue Functioning and Remodeling in the Circulatory and Ventilatory Systems
Author(s)Thiriet, Marc
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2013.
DescriptionXXI, 962 p. 72 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe volumes in this authoritative series present a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulation of flows in the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, especially multiscale modeling and coupled simulations. Volume 5 is devoted to cells, tissues, and organs of the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems with an emphasis on mechanotransduction-based regulation of flow. The blood vessel wall is a living tissue that quickly reacts to loads applied on it by the flowing blood. In any segment of a blood vessel, the endothelial and smooth muscle cells can sense unusual time variations in small-magnitude wall shear stress and large-amplitude wall stretch generated by abnormal hemodynamic stresses. These cells respond with a short-time scale (from seconds to hours) to adapt the vessel caliber. Since such adaptive cell activities can be described using mathematical models, a key objective of this volume is to identify the mesoscopic agents and nanoscopic mediators required to derive adequate mathematical models.?? The resulting biomathematical models and corresponding simulation software can be incorporated into platforms developed in virtual physiology for improved understanding and training. Reviews structure and function of major constituents of the circulatory and respiratory apparatus Describes major cellular processes involved in signaling, interactions, and adaptive responses of physiological conduits Integrates biology, chemistry, and physics for the multidisciplinary exploration and modeling of physiological flows Focuses on mechanotransduction-induced regulation

TitleBiology and Mechanics of Blood Flows : Part I: Biology
Author(s)Thiriet, Marc
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2008.
DescriptionXIV, 658 p : online resource
Abstract NoteBiology and Mechanics of Blood Flows presents the basic knowledge and state-of-the-art techniques necessary to carry out investigations of the cardiovascular system using modeling and simulation. Part I of this two-volume sequence, Biology, addresses the nanoscopic and microscopic scales. The nanoscale corresponds to the scale of biochemical reaction cascades involved in cell adaptation to mechanical stresses among other stimuli. The microscale is the scale of stress-induced tissue remodeling associated with acute or chronic loadings. The cardiovascular system, like any physiological system, has a complicated three-dimensional structure and composition. Its time dependent behavior is regulated, and this complex system has many components. In this authoritative work, the author provides a survey of relevant cell components and processes, with detailed coverage of the electrical and mechanical behaviors of vascular cells, tissues, and organs. Because the behaviors of vascular cells and tissues are tightly coupled to the mechanics of flowing blood, the major features of blood flows and the Navier-Stokes equations of mass and momentum conservation are introduced at the conclusion of this volume. This book will appeal to any biologist, chemist, physicist, or applied mathematician with an interest in the functioning of the cardiovascular system

TitleSelected Topics in Exercise Cardiology and Rehabilitation
Author(s)Raineri, A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1980.
DescriptionXI, 279 p. 47 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book the lectures of the first course of the International School of Cardiology at Ettore Majorana are presented. It is difficult to reflect in a publication of this kind the atmosphere and spirit of this postgraduate course. Moreover, the beautiful scenery of Erice and its surroundings, celebrated by ancient Greek poets, can never be described by the editors of this book. The purpo~e of this course was to deepen our knowledge accumulated todate on the subjects of non-invasive cardio?? circulatory assessment and the analysis of the comprehensive approach to cardiac rehabilitation. The clinical value of exercise testing, echo-cardiography, scintigraphy, systolic time intervals have been discussed, as well as the tasks of exercise training, surgery and drugs in the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. The problems of arrhythmias and the prevention of sudden death have been touched on, as well as early m~bilization after myocardial infarction, the use of digoxin and beta blockers and finally, the controversies in cardiac rehabilitation

TitlePulmonary Circulation in Health and Disease
Author(s)Cumming, G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1980.
DescriptionIX, 442 p. 122 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume documents the proceedings of a symposium on "The Pulmonary Circulation" held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, in Erice, Sicily, between 16th July and 21st July 1979. This was attended by about 200 participants drawn from Europe as a whole, but the majority were from Southern Europe. The discussion was recorded either in English or Italian and the tapes were reduced to a verbatim typescript by the Ente Nazionale Interpeti Congresso. The verbatim typescript has been edited using a few guiding principles as foliows: Titles and honorifics have been eliminated unless the 1. statement is addressed to a specific person. The style of the speakers in the discussion has been 2. preserved as far as possible and not reduced to a strictly grammatical format. 3. Where references to illustrations (e.g., on the blackboard) are made, the comments have been left unaltered and many are understandable. Removing them detracted from the sense. 4. The air of informality in the proceedings has been preserved so far as possible. 5. The responsibility for the discussion rests solely with the editors, and no contributor has had the opportunity of correcting whae he said. No manuscript was received from one participant, but the 6. discussion of his presentation has been included since it contains some points of substance. G. Cumming and G.
