Title3D Analysis of the Myocardial Microstructure : Determination of Fiber and Sheet Orientations
Author(s)Ticar, Johanna Maria
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Springer Spektrum 2. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2016.
DescriptionXV, 76 p. 39 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe master thesis of Johanna Maria Ticar reveals high-resolution insights into the myocardial microstructure and illustrates that cardiac muscle fibers are straight, running in parallel with one preferred fiber direction, however, deposits such as fat seem to compromise the regular and compact structure. Second harmonic generation imaging combined with optical tissue clearing is an accurate method for determining the three-dimensional muscle fiber and sheet orientations and hence, allows the calculation of fiber rotation throughout the ventricle wall. Contents ??? Structure of the Human Myocardium ??? Imaging Tools for Fiber Mapping ??? Optical Tissue Clearing ??? Second Harmonic Generation Imaging ??? 3D Reconstruction and Visualization Target Groups ??? Researchers and Students in the field of Biomedical Engineering with a focus on Bioengineering and??Biomechanics ??? Professionals in the field of Biomedicine The Author Johanna Maria Ticar, MSc, studied Biomedical Engineering at Graz University of Technology. Her research interests are the microstructure of the human body, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, foremost in the field of cardiology

DescriptionX, 279 p. 5 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteHow did science rise up to so dramatically change our world, and where will it take us in the future? This book gives a unique and broad overview. A brief history reveals the major phases and turning points in the rise of science from the earliest civilizations to the present: How was science ???discovered???? Why did it disappear a few times? When did it become ???modern???? A critical assessment examines how science actually ???happens???: the triumphs, the struggles, the mistakes and the luck. Science today is endlessly fascinating, and this book explores the current exponential growth, curiosity-driven vs. goal-oriented research, big and small science, the support of science, the relation of science to society, philosophy and religion, and the benefits and dangers of science. Finally a glimpse into the future: Will the current pace of science continue? Will we ever go backwards (again)? What remains to be discovered? Can science ever be complete? What can we imagine for the distant future? This book will be of wide interest to the general reader as well as to students and working scientists. This book provides a fresh, unique and insightful coverage of the processes of science, its impact on society and our understanding of the world, based on the author???s experience gained from a lifetime in science. TitleRed Cell Membrane Transport in Health and Disease
Author(s)Bernhardt, Ingolf;Ellory, J. Clive
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionXXVIII, 748 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes our current understanding of the transport of ions, amino acids, nucleosides, sugars, water and gases across the red blood cell membrane. It also outlines the necessary theoretical background to understand the dynamics of membrane constituents together with the mechanisms of transport pathways (pumps, channels, carriers/cotransporters, residual passive permeability). Separate chapters describe our present ideas about membrane and metabolic disorders as well as red blood cell diseases like malaria, sickle cell disease, and hypertension. The latest findings are explained on the basis of a historical review and well-established principles. The book and its chapters are thus structured in a manner that makes the material accessible to beginners in the field of red blood cell physiology and biophysics. Active researchers will also benefit from this carefully organized compilation

Author(s)Bunde, Armin;Kropp, J??rgen;Schellnhuber, Hans-Joachim
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXX, 453 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAre there universal laws governing the persistence of weather, and is it possible to predict climate transitions as generated by natural or man-made perturbations? How can one quantify the roller-coaster dynamics of stock markets and anticipate mega-crashes? Can we diagnose the health condition of patients from heartbeat time-series analysis which may even form the basis for infarct prevention? This book tackles these questions by applying advanced methods from statistical physics and related fields to all types of non-linear dynamics prone to disaster. The transdisciplinary analysis is organized in some dozen review articles written by world-class scientists

TitleBeyond Fear : Thinking Sensibly About Security in an Uncertain World
Author(s)Schneier, Bruce
PublicationNew York, NY, 1. Imprint: Copernicus 2. Springer New York, 2003.
DescriptionVIII, 296 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMany of us, especially since 9/11, have become personally concerned about issues of security, and this is no surprise. Security is near the top of government and corporate agendas around the globe. Security-related stories appear on the front page everyday. How well though, do any of us truly understand what achieving real security involves? In Beyond Fear, Bruce Schneier invites us to take a critical look at not just the threats to our security, but the ways in which we're encouraged to think about security by law enforcement agencies, businesses of all shapes and sizes, and our national governments and militaries. Schneier believes we all can and should be better security consumers, and that the trade-offs we make in the name of security - in terms of cash outlays, taxes, inconvenience, and diminished freedoms - should be part of an ongoing negotiation in our personal, professional, and civic lives, and the subject of an open and informed national discussion. With a well-deserved reputation for original and sometimes iconoclastic thought, Schneier has a lot to say that is provocative, counter-intuitive, and just plain good sense. He explains in detail, for example, why we need to design security systems that don't just work well, but fail well, and why secrecy on the part of government often undermines security. He also believes, for instance, that national ID cards are an exceptionally bad idea: technically unsound, and even destructive of security. And, contrary to a lot of current nay-sayers, he thinks online shopping is fundamentally safe, and that many of the new airline security measure (though by no means all) are actually quite effective. A skeptic of much that's promised by highly touted technologies like biometrics, Schneier is also a refreshingly positive, problem-solving force in the often self-dramatizing and fear-mongering world of security pundits. Schneier helps the reader to understand the issues at stake, and how to best come to one's own conclusions, including the vast infrastructure we already have in place, and the vaster systems--some useful, others useless or worse--that we're being asked to submit to and pay for. Bruce Schneier is the author of seven books, including Applied Cryptography (which Wired called "the one book the National Security Agency wanted never to be published") and Secrets and Lies (described in Fortune as "startlingly lively...[a] jewel box of little surprises you can actually use."). He is also Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., and publishes Crypto-Gram, one of the most widely read newsletters in the field of online security
