TitleObservational astronomy: Techniques and Instrumentation
Author(s)Edmund C. Sutton
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2012.
Descriptionxxiv, 394p.
Abstract NoteAstronomy is fundamentally an observational science and as such it is important for astronomers and astrophysicists to understand how their data are collected and analyzed. This book is a comprehensive review of current observational techniques and instruments. Featuring instruments such as Spitzer, Herschel, Fermi, ALMA, Super-Kamiokande, SNO, IceCube, the Auger Observatory, LIGO and LISA, the book discusses the capabilities and limitations of different types of instruments. It explores the sources and types of noise and provides statistical tools necessary for interpreting observational data. Due to the increasingly important role of statistical analysis, the techniques of Bayesian analysis are discussed, along with sampling techniques and model comparison. With topics ranging from fundamental subjects such as optics, photometry and spectroscopy, to neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves, this book is essential for graduate students in astronomy and physics.

TitleFundamentals of astrometry
Author(s)Jean Kovalevsky;P. Kenneth Seidelmann
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2004.
Descriptionxvi, 404p.
Contents NoteThe book is designed to provide the fundamentals for the new astrometry at the milli- and microarcsecond accuracies. The intent is to start from basic principles, without approximations, and develop the fundamentals of astrometry at mocroarcsecond accuracies. It is based on the general theory of relativity and the concepts introduced by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in the past decade.

TitleExplanatory supplement to the astronomical almanac
Author(s)Kenneth P. Seidelmann (ed.);Sean E. Urban (ed.)
Edition3rd. (#024727)
PublicationCalifornia, University Science Books, 1992.
Descriptionxxviii,752pp.
Abstract NoteBook offers explanatory material, supplemental information, and detailed descriptions of the computational models and algorithms used to produce The Astronomical Almanac, which is an annual publication prepared jointly by the US Naval Observatory and Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office in the UK. Like The Astronomical Almanac, The Explanatory Supplement provides detailed coverage of modern positional astronomy. Chapters are devoted to the celestial and terrestrial reference frames, orbital ephemerides, precession, nutation, Earth rotation, and coordinate transformations. These topics have undergone substantial revisions since the last edition was published in 1992. Astronomical positions are intertwined with timescales and relativity in The Astronomical Almanac, so related chapters are provided in The Explanatory Supplement. The Astronomical Almanac also includes information on lunar and solar eclipses, physical ephemerides of solar system bodies, and calendars, so The Explanatory Supplement expounds upon each of these topics as well. The book is written at a technical, but non-expert level. As such, it provides an important reference for a full range of users including astronomers, engineers, navigators, surveyors, space scientists, and educators.
