TitleModern Astrometry
Author(s)Kovalevsky, Jean
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionXIV, 353 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAstrometry is the domain of astronomy devoted to the determination of po?? sitions and their time-variations, and by extension, the apparent dimensions and shapes of celestial bodies. Although several books describe the theoretical foundations of positional astronomy, they touch only slightly on the descrip?? tion of instruments and the procedures for obtaining actual geometrical or kinematic quantities, which are among the basic observational data in the study of the Universe and of its components. The goal of the present book is, in contrast, to provide an up-to-date description of astrometric techniques, particularly the most recent and powerful ones, whether the instruments are on the ground or in space. Until the end of the 19th century, before the development of physical as?? tronomy, all astronomical observations were directed towards obtaining posi?? tions of celestial bodies. Since then astrophysics has become the most impor?? tant domain of astronomy. With the extension of observations to almost all wavelengths from radio waves to gamma rays, with the use of very sensitive new receivers and the development of fast computers, remarkable progress has been made in the description and the understanding of the Universe

TitleRossby Vortices, Spiral Structures, Solitons : Astrophysics and Plasma Physics in Shallow Water Experiments
Author(s)Nezlin, Mikhail V;Snezhkin, Evgenii N
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionIX, 223 p. 112 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book can be looked upon in more ways than one. On the one hand, it describes strikingly interesting and lucid hydrodynamic experiments done in the style of the "good old days" when the physicist needed little more than a piece of string and some sealing wax. On the other hand, it demonstrates how a profound physical analogy can help to get a synoptic view on a broad range of nonlinear phenomena involving self-organization of vortical structures in planetary atmo?? spheres and oceans, in galaxies and in plasmas. In particular, this approach has elucidated the nature and the mechanism of such grand phenomena as the Great of galaxies. A number of our Red Spot vortex on Jupiter and the spiral arms predictions concerning the dynamics of spiral galaxies are now being confirmed by astronomical observations stimulated by our experiments. This book is based on the material most of which was accumulated during 1981-88 in close cooperation with our colleagues, experimenters from the Plasma Physics Department of the Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute (S. V. Antipov, A. S. Trubnikov, AYu. Rylov, AV. Khutoretsky) and astrophysics theoreticians from the Astronomical Council of the USSR Academy of Sciences (AM. Frid?? man) and from the Volgograd State University (AG. Morozov). To all of them we wish to express our gratitude. Whenever we speak of "our experiments", the participation of the entire team is implied

TitleEnergetic Charged-Particle Interactions with Atmospheres and Surfaces
Author(s)Johnson, Robert E
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionX, 232 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOn attending a conference on the Jovian satellites at UCLA, I heard Lou Lanze?? rotti vigorously present the exciting data on the sputtering of water ice by Me V protons taken with W. L. Brown at AT&T Bell Labs. In his inimitable way he made clear that this new electronic sputtering process was very poorly under?? stood and was very important for surface properties of sattelites. I was immedia?? tely hooked, and have been working ever since with Lanzerotti, Brown, my col?? league at Virginia, John Boring, and Bo Sundqvist at Uppsala on understanding the ejection of material from surfaces and applying laboratory results to intere?? sting planetary problems. In the course of writing this book I also had the benefit of spending a semester with the Planetary Geosciences group in Hawaii, thanks to Tom McCord, a period of time with Doug Nash at JPL, and a period ot time with the group at Catania. The book was started with the encouragement of Lou Lanzerotti. The writing has gone slowly as the field has been changing rapidly. Even now I feel it is incom?? plete, as the interesting Halley dust data have just recently been interpreted in detail, Voyager has recently visited Neptune, and the data on Pluto are rapidly improving. However, most of the principles for plasma ion alteration of surfaces and gases have been established allowing, I hope, a coherent and useful frame?? work for incorporating both new laboratory and planetary data

TitleCyclical Variability in Stellar Winds : Proceedings of the ESO Workshop Held at Garching, Germany, 14 ??? 17 October 1997
Author(s)Kaper, Lex;Fullerton, Alexander W
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXXII, 418 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIt is well known that stellar winds are variable. Recent investigations show that the observed fluctuations are often cyclical in nature. This property seems to be shared by the winds of cool and hot stars, even though the physical mechanisms driving these winds are fundamentally different. The time was ripe for astrophysicists studying different types of stars, but applying very similar models, to present the state of the art in a concise form. The proceedings will provide a useful, up-to-date overview of the observations, interpretation, and modelling of the time-dependent mass outflows from a wide variety of stars, including young, pre-main-sequence objects, solar-type stars, red supergiants, and hot, massive stars

TitleTheory of Orbits : Perturbative and Geometrical Methods
Author(s)Boccaletti, Dino;Pucacco, Giuseppe
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXIV, 423 p. 62 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteTheory of Orbits treats celestial mechanics as well as stellar dynamics from the common point of view of orbit theory, making use of concepts and techniques from modern geometric mechanics. It starts with elementary Newtonian mechanics and ends with the dynamics of chaotic motion. The two volumes are meant for students in astronomy and physics alike. Prerequisite is a physicist's knowledge of calculus and differential geometry. The first three chapters of this second volume are devoted to the theory of perturbations, starting from classical problems and arriving at the KAM theory, and to the introduction of the use of the Lie transform. A whole chapter treats the theory of adiabatic invariants and its applications in celestial mechanics and stellar dynamics. Also the theory of resonances is illustrated and applications in both fields are shown. Classical and modern problems connected to periodic solutions are reviewed. The description of modern developments of the theory of chaos in conservative systems is the subject of a chapter in which an introduction is given to what happens in both near-integrable and non-integrable systems. The invaluable help provided by computers in the exploration of the long-time behaviour of dynamical systems is acknowledged in a final chapter, where some numerical algorithms and their applications both to systems with few degrees of freedom and to large N-body systems are illustrated
