Description | XI, 557 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | How to produce images with sound has intrigued engineers and scientists for many years. Bats, whales and dolphins can easily get good mental images with acoustical energy, but humans have little natural ability for obtaining such images. The history of engineering and science, however, is an impressive demonstration that technological solutions can compensate, and then some, for deficiencies of nature in humans. Thus with the proper technology, we too can "see" with sound. Many methods involv?? ing ultrasonic energy can be employed to enable us to do so. Few of these methods are at all reminiscent of the acoustic systems employed by animals. Pulse-echo, phase-amplitude and amplitude-mapping approaches constitute the conceptual bases for three fundamentally different types of acoustic imaging systems and can be used for categorizing the systems. However, by now systems exist that combine the approaches in such sophisticated ways as to make an unambiguous categorization of some of the more complicated systems difficult or impossible. Among the instruments so far pro?? duced are mechanically-scanning focused instruments, chirped pulse-echo instruments, and instruments involving holography, tomography, parametric excitation, phase conju?? gation, neural networks, random phase transduction, finite element methods, Doppler frequency shifting, pseudo inversion, Bragg diffraction and reflection, and a host of other principles. The fifty-five chapters in this volume are selected from papers presented at the Eighteenth International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging which was held in Santa Barbara, California on September 18 - 20, 1989 |

Title | Ultrashort Processes in Condensed Matter |
Author(s) | Bron, Walter E |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1993. |
Description | VII, 398 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Advanced Study Institute (AS!) considered a number offacets of the very rapidly advancing field of theoretical and experimental aspects of ultrashort processes in condensed matter. Common threads exist between a series of example cases. One major subgroup of topics involves the ultrashort dynamics of excitations of various "particles" produced through the interactions of condensed matter with ultrashort duration laser light. Examples ofthe excitations include electronic and hole carriers, electron-hole plasma, phonons, vibrons and rotons, two phonon states, and excitons. Experimentation on the dynamics of such excitations, are carried out in the bulk, at surfaces, in thin films, and in quantum wells. The dynamical steps which the excitations usually undergo include photo-excitation, local thermalization, particle-particle interaction, particle phonon interactions and eventual return to true thermal equilibrium. This ASI was organized to benefit particularly advanced graduate students, specifically, those near the end of their Ph.D. thesis projects, and also for postdoctoral scholars already active in the field. The overall organizational goal was centered around a set oftutorially based lectures intermingled with full scale discussion periods of equal time and importance as the lectures. The general discussion periods were designed to offer to the participants ample time to ask detailed questions and to make comments and contributions of their own. In order to complete the involvement of the participants a full length poster session was also held. A representative set of abstracts of these posters appear as an Appendix to the lectures |

Title | Amazing Light : A Volume Dedicated To Charles Hard Townes On His 80th Birthday |
Author(s) | Chiao, Raymond Y |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1996. |
Description | 682 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This Festschrift is a collection of essays contributed by students, colleagues, and ad?? mirers to honor an eminent scholar on a special anniversary: Charles Hard Townes on the occasion of his 80th birthday, July 28, 1995. In 1964, Townes shared the Nobel Prize in physics with Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov and Nikolai Gen?? nadyevich Basov "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle. " His contributions have covered a much wider area, however. His fruitful interests spanning several decades have included many scientific subjects, includ?? ing, microwave spectroscopy and astrophysics (other articles in this volume will expand further on this point). He has also contributed to public service, having served as the chairman of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee for NASA's Apollo program, and as a member and vice chairman of the President's Science Advisory Committee. As the enormous breadth of contributions from his students shows, he has educated scholars who are now in a wide range of fields. The contributions from his many admirers, among whom are nine fellow Nobel laureates, attest to his impact on many disciplines ranging from electrical engi?? neering to medicine. His influence extends even to theology, as is indicated by one essay. The broadly international character of this Festschrift reflects his deep belief in the international, universal nature of science |

Title | Acoustical Holography : Volume 1 Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Acoustical Holography, held at the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories, Huntington Beach, California December 14???15, 1967 |
Author(s) | Metherell, A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1969. |
Description | XVIII, 294 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Only a space limitation of 115 seats prevented this First International Symposium on Acoustical Holography from having an attendance of over 250. Unfortunately, the size of the auditorium of the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories required that attendance be by invitation only, and many deserving and interested scientists could not be present. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, and hopefully will help compen?? sate those individuals who were unable to attend. The symposium itself consisted of sixteen formal papers. The seven?? teenth, by Dr. P. Greguss, was not received in time to be read but is included in these proceedings. The presence of Professor Dennis Gabor considerably enhanced the informal sessions, which frequently became as spirited as one might expect in a new field. Dr. H. M. A. El-Sum, a consultant to the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories and a pioneer in the field of holography, set the stage with the first paper. He provided a general introduction to the physical principles and practical methods involved in optical and acoustical holography. His paper also included a summary of various specific techniques currently used in sound holography, with the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations involved for each approach |

Title | Acoustical Holography : Volume 4 Proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Acoustical Holography, held in Santa Barbara, California, April 10???12, 1972 |
Author(s) | Wade, Glen |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1972. |
Description | XII, 740 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The latest progress in acoustical holography and related research areas, generally involving imaging by means of acoustic waves, was discussed and treated in depth at the Fourth International Symposium on Acoustical Holography, held in Santa Barbara, California on April 10-12, 1972. This volume contains the proceedings of that symposium. As the papers presented here indicate, a num?? ber of startling advances have been realized in the state-of-the-art since publication of Volume 3 of Acoustical Holography. Progress has been partic?? ularly impressive in the field of acoustical imag?? ing. The Fourth International Symposium represents something of alandmark conference in this respect. The scope of this volume is substantially broad?? er than the term "acoustical holography' usually implies and encompasses the whole area of visualiza?? tion, detection, and recording of sound fields whether with long wavelengths, microwaves, or with extrememly short sound wavelengths. The 37 sympo?? sium papers appear here each as aseparate chapter. In general, the work reported deals mainly with ex?? perimental and theoretical developments in the a?? bove areas. This work has significant practical potential use in terms of seismic sensing, under?? water imaging, non-destructive testing, real-time acoustic microscopy, and medical diagnosis |

Title | Instrumentation: A Reader : A reader |
Author(s) | Loxton, R;Pope, P |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1990. |
Description | 272 p. 28 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book contains a selection of papers and articles in instrumentation previously pub?? lished in technical periodicals and journals of learned societies. Our selection has been made to illustrate aspects of current practice and applications of instrumentation. The book does not attempt to be encyclopaedic in its coverage of the subject, but to provide some examples of general transduction techniques, of the sensing of particular measurands, of components of instrumentation systems and of instrumentation practice in two very different environments, the food industry and the nuclear power industry. We have made the selection particularly to provide papers appropriate to the study of the Open University course T292 Instrumentation. The papers have been chosen so that the book covers a wide spectrum of instrumentation techniques. Because of this, the book should be of value not only to students of instrumen?? tation, but also to practising engineers and scientists wishing to glean ideas from areas of instrumentation outside their own fields of expertise. In recent years instrumentation has emerged as a discipline in its own right rather than as an adjunct to traditional science and engineering disciplines. This development has been driven partly by the needs of industries for new and improved sensing techniques, and partly by new technological developments such as microprocessors, optical fibres and in?? tegrated silicon sensors which are revolutionising sensing and signal processing practice |

Title | Diffraction Optics of Complex-Structured Periodic Media |
Author(s) | Vladimir I., Vladimir |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1992. |
Description | XXII, 352 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Probing matter with beams of photons, neutrons and electrons provides the main source of information about both the microscopic and macroscopic structure of materials. This is particularly true of media, such as crystals and liquid crystals, that have a periodic structure. This book discusses the interaction of waves (which may represent x-rays, gamma rays, electrons, or neutrons) with various kinds of ordered media. After two chapters dealing with exact and approximate solutions to the scattering problem in periodic media in general, the author discusses: the diffraction of M????bauer radiation in magnetically ordered crystals; the optics of chiral liquid crystals; the radiation of fast particles in regular media (Cherenkov radiation); nonlinear optics of periodic media; neutron scattering in magnetically ordered media; polarization phenomena in x-ray optics; magnetic x-ray scattering; and M????bauer filtration of synchrotron radiation |

Title | Confined Photon Systems : Fundamentals and Applications |
Author(s) | Benisty, Henri;Gerard, Jean-Michel;Houdre, Romuald;Rarity, John;Weisbuch, Claude |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | X, 502 p. 169 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Confined photon system such as microcavities and photonic crystals are currently of great interest, both in terms of fundamental physics and as a result of potential applications. They enable the study of low-dimensional photonic systems, modified light-matter interaction, e.g. between excitons and photons in all-solid-state semiconductor microcavities, and of many phenomena of quantum optics, including single photon generation, squeezed light, quantum state entanglement, non-local quantum measurements, and, potentially, quantum computation. They are also on the verge of yielding new, high performance optical devices for large-scale industries such as telecommunications and display technology. The lectures in this book are organized in a didactic fashion, with a group of in-depth introductory lectures followed by more specialist contributions detailing particular applications of confined photon systems |
