Contents NoteThe two big X-ray observatories, AXAF-Chandra and XMM-Newton were successively and successfully placed in orbit in 1999, and new and marvelous data are flowing out from the two missions. The first purpose of this symposium was to see what is now becoming clear with these two great X-ray observatories. Just five days prior to the symposium, Professor Minoru Oda, one of the greatest pioneers of X-ray astronomy passed away on March 1, 2001 at the age of 78.
