TitleThe Alien Communication Handbook : So We Received a Signal???Now What?
Author(s)McConnell, Brian S
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionX, 299 p. 150 illus., 97 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteScientists have been searching for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations since Frank Drake???s first radio survey in 1960. But what would actually happen if SETI???s search succeeds? Is there any way we could even make sense of the signal we receive? Written by an expert in communication systems and translation technology, this book explores the science of interstellar communication. It explains how this process may unfold, how an ET communication link would work, the types of information it could convey and how professionals, amateurs and ordinary people like you would participate in the effort to understand what another civilization has to say. Along the way, the book introduces readers to many aspects of modern-day communication systems and computing. Featured as well are dozens of illustrations, photos and real-world examples, rounding out this compelling foray into the mechanics of interstellar communication. ???Scientists, policy makers, and all interested in the likely future discovery of alien life will want to read this book.??? - Steven J. Dick, Former NASA Chief Historian

TitleQuantum Cryptography : From Key Distribution to Conference Key Agreement
Author(s)Grasselli, Federico
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVII, 152 p. 14 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteRising concerns about the security of our data have made quantum cryptography a very active research field in recent years. Quantum cryptographic protocols promise everlasting security by exploiting distinctive quantum properties of nature. The most extensively implemented protocol is quantum key distribution (QKD), which enables secure communication between two users. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to state-of-the-art QKD and illustrate its recent multi-user generalization: quantum conference key agreement. With its pedagogical approach that doesn???t disdain going into details, the book enables the reader to join in cutting-edge research on quantum cryptography

TitleLinear Systems and Optimal Control
Author(s)Chui, Charles K;Chen, Guanrong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionVIII, 155 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteA knowledge of linear systems provides a firm foundation for the study of optimal control theory and many areas of system theory and signal processing. State-space techniques developed since the early sixties have been proved to be very effective. The main objective of this book is to present a brief and somewhat complete investigation on the theory of linear systems, with emphasis on these techniques, in both continuous-time and discrete-time settings, and to demonstrate an application to the study of elementary (linear and nonlinear) optimal control theory. An essential feature of the state-space approach is that both time-varying and time-invariant systems are treated systematically. When time-varying systems are considered, another important subject that depends very much on the state-space formulation is perhaps real-time filtering, prediction, and smoothing via the Kalman filter. This subject is treated in our monograph entitled "Kalman Filtering with Real-Time Applications" published in this Springer Series in Information Sciences (Volume 17). For time-invariant systems, the recent frequency domain approaches using the techniques of Adamjan, Arov, and Krein (also known as AAK), balanced realization, and oo H theory via Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation seem very promising, and this will be studied in our forthcoming monograph entitled "Mathematical Ap?? proach to Signal Processing and System Theory". The present elementary treatise on linear system theory should provide enough engineering and mathe?? of these two subjects

TitleNew digital age: Reshaping the Future of People, Nations and Business
Author(s)Eric Schmidt;Jared Cohen
PublicationLondon, John Murray, 2013.
Description315p.
Abstract NoteIn an unparalleled collaboration, two leading global thinkers in technology and foreign affairs give us their widely anticipated, transformational vision of the future: a world where everyone is connected—a world full of challenges and benefits that are ours to meet and to harness. Eric Schmidt is one of Silicon Valley’s great leaders, having taken Google from a small startup to one of the world’s most influential companies. Jared Cohen is the director of Google Ideas and a former adviser to secretaries of state Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton. With their combined knowledge and experiences, the authors are uniquely positioned to take on some of the toughest questions about our future: Who will be more powerful in the future, the citizen or the state? Will technology make terrorism easier or harder to carry out? What is the relationship between privacy and security, and how much will we have to give up to be part of the new digital age?
