Author(s) | Horikawa, Kiyoshi;Maruo, Hajime |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | XVIII, 466 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Non-linear behaviour of water waves has recently drawn much attention of scientists and engineers in the fields of oceanography, applied mathematics, coastal engineering, ocean engineering, naval architecture, and others. The IUTAM Symposium on Non-linear Water Waves was organized with the aim of bringing together researchers who are actively studying non-linear water waves from various viewpoints. The papers contained in this book are related to the generation and deformation of non-linear water waves and the non-linear interaction between waves and bodies. That is, various types of non-linear water waves were analyzed on the basis of various well-known equations, experimental studies on breaking waves were presented, and numerical studies of calculating second-order non-linear wave-body interaction were proposed |

Title | Nonstandard Analysis : Theory and Applications |
Author(s) | Arkeryd, Leif O;Cutland, Nigel J;Henson, C. Ward |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997. |
Description | XIV, 366 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | 1 More than thirty years after its discovery by Abraham Robinson , the ideas and techniques of Nonstandard Analysis (NSA) are being applied across the whole mathematical spectrum,as well as constituting an im?? portant field of research in their own right. The current methods of NSA now greatly extend Robinson's original work with infinitesimals. However, while the range of applications is broad, certain fundamental themes re?? cur. The nonstandard framework allows many informal ideas (that could loosely be described as idealisation) to be made precise and tractable. For example, the real line can (in this framework) be treated simultaneously as both a continuum and a discrete set of points; and a similar dual ap?? proach can be used to link the notions infinite and finite, rough and smooth. This has provided some powerful tools for the research mathematician - for example Loeb measure spaces in stochastic analysis and its applications, and nonstandard hulls in Banach spaces. The achievements of NSA can be summarised under the headings (i) explanation - giving fresh insight or new approaches to established theories; (ii) discovery - leading to new results in many fields; (iii) invention - providing new, rich structures that are useful in modelling and representation, as well as being of interest in their own right. The aim of the present volume is to make the power and range of appli?? cability of NSA more widely known and available to research mathemati?? cians |

Title | Transition, Turbulence and Combustion : Volume I: Transition |
Author(s) | Hussaini, M.Y;Gatski, Thomas B;Jackson, Thomas L |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | XX, 393 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | These two volumes contain the proceedings of the Workshop on Transition, Turbulence and Combustion, sponsored by the Insti?? tute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during June 7 to July 2, 1993. Volume I contains the contributions from the transi?? tion research, and Volume II contains the contributions from both the turbulence and combustion research. This is the third workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, the second in 1991, and their proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the titles "Instability and Transition" (edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt) and "Instability, Transition and Turbulence" (edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar and C. L. Streett) respectively. The objectives of these workshops are to expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of transition, turbulence and combustion, and to acquaint the academic commu?? nity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC. It is hoped these will foster con?? tinued interactions, and accelerate progress in elucidating the funda?? mental phenomena of transition, turbulence and combustion. The research areas of interest in transition covered the full range of the subject: linear and nonlinear stability, direct and large-eddy simulation and phenomenological modeling of the transition zone |

Title | Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamic Engineering Systems : IUTAM Symposium Innsbruck/Igls, Austria, June 21???26, 1987 |
Author(s) | Ziegler, Franz;Schueller, Gerhard I |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | X, 541 p. 1 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This symposium, held at Innsbruck/lgls on June 21-26, 1987, is the fifth in a series of IUTAM-Symposia on the application of stochastic methods in mechanics. The flrst two meetings in Warwick (1972) and Southhampton (1976) concentrated on the stability of stochastic dynamical systems and stochastic methods in dynamics, respectively. The third meeting in Frankfurt/Oder (1982) added aspects of reliability, while the fourth symposium in Stockholm (1984) dealt mainly with fatigue and fracture problems. The general theme of the present symposium is devoted to nonlinear stochastic dynamics of engineering systems which is believed of great importance for providing the tools for basic development and progress in various fields of mechanical-, structural- and aeronautical engineering, particularly in the areas of vehicle dynamics, multi-storey structural dynamics, systems identiflcation, offshore structural dynamics, nuclear structures under various stochastic loading conditions (i. e. wind-, earthquake-, parametric excitations, etc. ). The contributions collected in this volume cover a wide spectrum of topics ranging from more theoretical, analytical and numerical treatment to practical application in various flelds. The truly international character of the meeting is accomplished by 42 contributions and 86 participants from as many as 19 countries and hence, contributed to the original idea of IUTAM, which is to foster international cooperation. It should be recalled, that, for getting this cooperation started again after the First World War, Theodore von Kanmm and Tullio Levi-Civita called the world's flrst international (IUTAM) conference on hydro- and aerornechanics in 1922 in Innsbruck, Austria |

Title | Asymptotic Approaches in Nonlinear Dynamics : New Trends and Applications |
Author(s) | Awrejcewicz, Jan;Andrianov, Igor V;Manevitch, Leonid I |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998. |
Description | XI, 310 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | How well is Nature simulated by the varied asymptotic models that imaginative scientists have invented? B. Birkhoff [52J This book deals with asymptotic methods in nonlinear dynamics. For the first time a detailed and systematic treatment of new asymptotic methods in combination with the Pade approximant method is presented. Most of the basic results included in this manuscript have not been treated but just mentioned in the literature. Providing a state-of-the-art review of asymptotic applications, this book will prove useful as an introduction to the field for novices as well a reference for specialists. Asymptotic methods of solving mechanical and physical problems have been developed by many authors. For example, we can refer to the excel?? lent courses by A. Nayfeh [119-122]' M. Van Dyke [154], E.J. Hinch [94J and many others [59, 66, 95, 109, 126, 155, 163, 50d, 59dJ. The main features of the monograph presented are: 1) it is devoted to the basic principles of asymp?? totics and its applications, and 2) it deals with both traditional approaches (such as regular and singular perturbations, averaging and homogenization, perturbations of the domain and boundary shape) and less widely used, new approaches such as one- and two-point Pade approximants, the distributional approach, and the method of boundary perturbations |

Abstract Note | This volume entitled "EUROPT - A European Initiative on Optimum Design in Aerodynamics" contains the results of the contributors during a workshop which took place in Barcelona in June 1992. This workshop was organized in the framp?? work of the Brite/Euram Aeronautics project "Optimum Design in Aerodynamics" (AERO-89-0026). The project brought together nine European partners from Acade?? my and Industry with big experience in numerical optimization techniques applif'd to automated optimum design. The manuscript is directed to the optimization field and its goal is to provide the reader with useful numerical optimization techniques for optimum design in aerody?? namIcs. The field of numerical optimization techniques has been growing since the early 50's. But only recently, with the recent advent of powerful computers. it has yielded real-life applications that demonstrate industrial potential for design purposes. Nowadays, optimization is at the stage where those scientists and engineers who have worked in the field are to be paid to apply numerical optimization to automated design of real problems, namely aerodynamic shapes in Aerospace Engineering. For the above reasons, it was evident that a Workshop on numerical optimization techniques for the validation of optimum design methods would be of interest to most of the partners involved in the AERO-S9-0026 project in order to compare in terms of accuracy and efficiency several optimization soft wares performed on the same selected flow problems |

Title | New Trends in Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern-Forming Phenomena : The Geometry of Nonequilibrium |
Author(s) | Coullet, Pierre;Huerre, Patrick |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1990. |
Description | 368 p. 259 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The basic aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "New Trends in Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern-Forming Phenomena: The Geometry of Nonequilibrium" was to bring together researchers from various areas of physics to review and explore new ideas regarding the organisation of systems driven far from equilibrium. Such systems are characterized by a close relationship between broken spatial and tempo?? ral symmetries. The main topics of interest included pattern formation in chemical systems, materials and convection, traveling waves in binary fluids and liquid crystals, defects and their role in the disorganisa?? tion of structures, spatio-temporal intermittency, instabilities and large-scale vortices in open flows, the mathematics of non-equilibrium systems, turbulence, and last but not least growth phenomena. Written contributions from participants have been grouped into chapters addressing these different areas. For additional clarity, the first chapter on pattern formation has been subdivided into sections. One of the main concerns was to focus on the unifying features between these diverse topics. The various scientific communities repre?? sented were encouraged to discuss and compare their approach so as to mutually benefit their respective fields. We hope that, to a large degree, these goals have been met and we thank all the participants for their efforts. The workshop was held in Cargese (Corsica, France) at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques from August 2nd to August 12th, 1988. We greatly thank Yves Pomeau and Daniel Walgraef who, as members of the organising committee, gave us valuable advice and encouragements |

Title | Nonlocality in Quantum Physics |
Author(s) | Grib, Andrey Anatoljevich;Rodrigues Jr., Waldyr Alves |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1999. |
Description | X, 225 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The nonlocality phenomena exhibited by entangled quantum systems are certainly one of the most extraordinary aspects of quantum theory. This book discusses this phe?? nomenon according to several points of view, i.e., according to different interpretations of the mathematics of the quantum formalism. The several interpretations of the Copenhagen interpretation, the many worlds, the de Broglie-Bohm, quantum logics, the decohering by the environment approach and the histories approach interpretations are scrutinized and criticized in detail. Recent results on cryptography, quantum bit commitment, quantum erasers and teleportation are also presented and discussed. In preparing the book we benefited from discussions with many people, but we would like, in particular, to express our gratitude to Professor B. d'Espagnat for his useful comments and suggestions. We are grateful also to Ms. L. Gentry EI-Dash for the English revision, to Dr. 1. E. Maiorino for the production of the figures and a careful reading of the manuscript, and for the statI of Plenum for advice and for having produced a nice book. Finally, the authors thank FAPESP (contract no. I 99612657-0) for a grant making this book possible. A. A. ORIB AND W. A. RODRIGUES, JR |

Title | Disorder and Fracture |
Author(s) | Charmet, J.C;Guyon, E;Roux, St??phane |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1990. |
Description | 316 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Fracture, and particularly brittle fracture, is a good example of an instability. For a homogeneous solid, subjected to a uniform stress field, a crack may appear anywhere in the structure once the threshold stress is reached. However, once a crack has been nucleated in some place, further damage in the solid will in most cases propagate from the initial crack, and not somewhere else in the solid. In this sense fracture is an unstable process. This property makes the process extremely sensitive to any heterogeneity present in the medium, which selects the location of the first crack nucleated. In particular, fracture appears to be very sensitive to disorder, which can favor or impede local cracks. Therefore, in most realistic cases, a good description of fracture mechanics should include the effect of disorder. Recently this need has motivated work in this direction starting from the usual description of fracture mechanics. Parallel with this first trend, statistical physics underwent a very important development in the description of disordered systems. In particular, let us mention the emergence of some "new" concepts (such as fractals, scaling laws, finite size effects, and so on) in this field. However, many models considered were rather simple and well adapted to theoretical or numerical introduction into a complex body of problems. An example of this can be found in percolation theory. This area is now rather well understood and accurately described |
