Contents NoteThe session LX of Les Houches Summer School on cosmology and large scale structure was devoted to exploring the nature of dark matter and the evolution of the universe, points intricately interwined with the understanding of the observed structures. More than a decade after the field has been totally renewed by the unveiling of its relation with modern particle physics, right after the breakthrough of the discovery of the microwave background fluctuations by COBE that confirms these views, and just after the HST entered in operation, the year 1993 provided a timely opportunity to assess our present understanding of the subject.
