DescriptionXXIII, 639 p. 315 illus., 63 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book highlights the fundamental principles of optical fiber technology required for understanding modern high-capacity lightwave telecom networks. Such networks have become an indispensable part of society with applications ranging from simple web browsing to critical healthcare diagnosis and cloud computing. Since users expect these services to always be available, careful engineering is required in all technologies ranging from component development to network operations. To achieve this understanding, this book first presents a comprehensive treatment of various optical fiber structures and diverse photonic components used in optical fiber networks. Following this discussion is the fundamental design principles of digital and analog optical fiber transmission links. The concluding chapters present the architectures and performance characteristics of optical networks

Title3D Printing of Optical Components
Author(s)Heinrich, Andreas
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXII, 297 p. 223 illus., 192 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis edited volume reviews the current state of the art in the additive manufacturing of optical componentry, exploring key principles, materials, processes and applications. A short introduction lets readers familiarize themselves with the fundamental principles of the 3D printing method. This is followed by a chapter on commonly-used and emerging materials for printing of optical components, and subsequent chapters are dedicated to specific topics and case studies. The high potential of additive manufactured optical components is presented based on different manufacturing techniques and accompanied with extensive examples ??? from nanooptics to large scale optics ??? and taking research and industrial perspectives. Readers are provided with an extensive overview of the new possibilities brought about by this alternative method for optical components manufacture. Finally, the limitations of the method with respect to manufacturing techniques, materials and optical properties of the generated objects are discussed. With contributions from experts in academia and industry, this work will appeal to a wide readership, from undergraduate students through engineers to researchers interested in modern methods of manufacturing optical components

TitleLight and its many wonders
Author(s)Ajoy Ghatak (ed.);Anirban Pathak (ed.);V. P. Sharma (ed.)
PublicationNew Delhi, Viva Books, 2015.
Descriptionxx, 483p.
Abstract NoteThe United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light (IYL 2015). The IYL was to recognize the tremendous applications of light in our everyday lives: from the benefits of sunlight, to the intricate processes in our eyes, to holography, to fiber optic communications across oceans, to extremely important applications of lasers from eye surgery to drilling holes in steel and to numerous other areas. From its inception, The National Academy of Sciences, India (the oldest Science Academy in India) is committed to bringing scientific developments to the benefit of the society at large. Keeping this in mind, and as a part of the celebration of IYL 2015, the Academy entrusted the editors to bring out a book in which various aspects of light and light-based technologies will be lucidly described by experts with the aim to enthuse young students, teachers and the general public to get interested in studying more about light and be aware of its phenomenal applications. The editors were very fortunate to get a large number of experts to agree to contribute to this book. Of course, there are many other very interesting areas which could have been covered. We hope that the book will be able to enthuse the younger generation to study more about light.
