Author(s) | Eberly, J.H;Mandel, L;Wolf, E |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1996. |
Description | XXIII, 737 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Seventh Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics was held on the campus of the University of Rochester during the four-day period June 7 - 10, 1996. More than 280 scientists from 33 countries participated. This book contains the Proceedings of the meeting. This Conference differed from the previous six in the series in having only a limited number of oral presentations, in order to avoid too many parallel sessions. Another new feature was the introduction of tutorial lectures. Most contributed papers were presented in poster sessions. The Conference was sponsored by the American Physical Society, by the Optical Society of America, by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and by the University of Rochester. We wish to express our appreciation to these organizations for their support and we especially extend our thanks to the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics for providing financial assistance to a number of speakers from Third World countries, to enable them to take part in the meeting |

Title | Survey of Semiconductor Physics : Volume II Barriers, Junctions, Surfaces, and Devices |
Author(s) | B??er, Karl W |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992. |
Description | XCIV, 1442 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Any book that covers a large variety of subjects and is written by one author lacks by necessity the depth provided by an expert in his or her own field of specialization. This book is no exception. It has been written with the encouragement of my students and colleagues, who felt that an extensive card file I had accumulated over the years of teaching solid state and semiconductor physics would be helpful to more than just a few of us. This file, updated from time to time, contained lecture notes and other entries that were useful in my research and permitted me to give to my students a broader spectrum of information than is available in typical textbooks. When assembling this material into a book, I divided the top?? ics into material dealing with the homogeneous semiconductor, the subject of the previously published Volume 1, and the inhomoge?? neous semiconductor, the subject of this Volume 2. In order to keep the book to a manageable size, sections of tutorial character which can be used as text for a graduate level class had to be interwoven with others written in shorter, reference style. The pointers at the right-hand page header will assist in distinguishing the more diffi?? cult reference parts of the book (with the pointer to the right) from the more easy-to-read basic educational sections (with the pointer tending to the left) |

Title | High-Tc Superconductors |
Author(s) | Weber, Harald W |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1988. |
Description | XII, 364 p. 55 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the past two years conferences on superconductivity have been characterized by the attendance of hundreds of scientists. Consequently, the organizers were forced to schedule numerous parallel sessions and poster presentations with an almost unsurveyable amount of information. It was, therefore, felt that a more informal get-together, providing ample time for a thourough discussion of some topics of current interest in high-temperature superconductivity, was timely and benefitial for leading scientists as well as for newcomers in the field. The present volume contains the majority of papers presented at the International Discussion Meeting on High-Tc Superconductors held at the Mauterndorf Castle in the Austrian Alps from February 7 to 11, 1988. Each subject was introduced in review form by a few invited speakers and then discussed together with the contributed poster presentations. These discussion sessions chaired by selected scientists turned out to be the highlights of the meeting, not only because all the participants truly appreciated the possibility of an information exchange, but mainly because of the magnificent job done by the discussion chairmen, John A. Mydosh (Leiden), Martin Peter (Geneva) and Ken E. Gray (Argonne). First results on the just discovered Bi-superconductors and the clarification of electron resonance experiments on (123)-compounds should be mentioned in particular. The relaxed atomosphere favoring free discussions was certainly promoted by the surroundings offered in the Mauterndorf Castle, which dates back to 1253. Poster presentations and a conference banquet in historic knight's halls are certainly not found everyday in conference routines |

Title | Engineering Optics |
Author(s) | Iizuka, Keigo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1985. |
Description | XV, 489 p. 379 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | "Which area do you think I should go into?" or "Which are the areas that have the brightest future?" are questions that are frequently asked by students trying to decide on a field of specialization. My advice has always been to pick any field that combines two or more disciplines such as Nuclear Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Optoelectronics, or even Engineering Optics. With the ever growing complexity of today's science and technology, many a problem can be tackled only with the cooperative effort of more than one discipline. Engineering Optics deals with the engineering aspects of optics, and its main emphasis is on applying the knowledge. of optics to the solution of engineering problems. This book is intended both for the physics student who wants to apply his knowledge of optics to engineering problems and for the engineering student who wants to acquire the basic principles of optics. The material in the book was arranged in an order that would progres?? sively increase the student's comprehension of the subject. Basic tools and concepts presented in the earlier chapters are then developed more fully and applied in the later chapters. In many instances, the arrangement of the material differs from the true chronological order. The following is intended to provide an overview of the organization of the book. In this book, the theory of the Fourier transforms was used whenever possible because it provides a simple and clear explanation for many phenomena in optics. Complicated mathematics have been com?? pletely eliminated |

Author(s) | Maclin, Arlene P;Gill, Tepper L;Zachary, Woodford W |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | VI, 142 p. 20 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The book begins with a personal tribute to Warren E. Henry and a reprint of one of his influential papers from Physical Review. The following proceedings give a comprehensive view of recent research on the topic of magnetism, including topics from theoretical and experimental perspectives. Contributions include papers on the theoretical relationship between magnetic phenomena and superconductivity, a new class of magnetic materials produced by molecular beam epitaxy, non-linear phenomena in magnetization fields, quantum chaos in magnetic phenomena, and magnetic devices and anisotropy. The volume brings together original papers written by experts in various areas of the field of magnetism. This is one of the first books in recent years to treat all facets of the field of magnetics. The book will be a useful survey for researchers, engineers and graduate students |

Title | The Optical Aurora |
Author(s) | Omholt, A |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1971. |
Description | XIV, 200 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The aim of this book is to describe and discuss the aurora as an optical phenomenon, one which can be observed by the naked eye as well as with more sensitive optical detectors. It continues the tradition of study?? ing that impressive and imaginative play of nature, the northern lights, seen and discussed by the Greek philosphers as early as the sixth century B.c. Today the study of the optical aurora is only one of many ways of acquiring information about a major phenomenon: the ejection of plasma from the sun, the interaction of this plasma with the geomagnetic field and the injection of fast particles into the earth's atmosphere. of the optical aurora is justified by the Hence, the separate treatment particular scientific approach: detection and interpretation of electro?? magnetic radiation, approximately in the 1000-100000 A region, produc?? ed through interaction between the auroral particles and the earth's atmosphere. Other techniques, such as radio observations, X-ray observations, direct particle detections from rockets and satellites, studies of magnetic storms, and measurements of the magnetic field and plasma properties in the magnetosphere, are as important or more important than the classical way of studying the optical aurora. Nevertheless, it was felt worthwhile to treat the optical aurora in a separate book, perhaps mainly because today one author cannot master the whole subject with sufficient competence. This book is thus one volume in a series of books giving a more complete picture of physics and chemistry in space |

Title | Coherent Control in Atoms, Molecules, and Semiconductors |
Author(s) | P??tz, Walter;Schroeder, W. Andreas |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999. |
Description | XI, 226 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The International Workshop on Coherent Control of Carrier Dynamics in Semiconductors was held May 19 to 22, 1998 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Its intent was to bring together an international and interdisciplinary group of scientists to discuss recent progress, pertinent problems, and open questions in the field of coherent control in atoms, molecules, and semiconductors, in particular. Twenty-seven scientists from the physical chemistry, quantum optics, semiconductor, electrical engineering, and laser communities accepted our invitation and made this event a meeting of exciting presentations and vivid discussions. This volume contains the proceedings of this workshop. Most speakers accepted our invitation to provide a manuscript either on specific aspects of their work or a brief review of their area of research. All manuscripts were reviewed. It is hoped that they provide not merely an overview of most of the issues covered during the workshop, but also represent an account of the current state of coherent control in general. Hence, it is hoped that they are also of interest to a large number of scientists active in one of the areas listed above. The organizers of this workshop would like to thank all the participants for making this meeting a complete success. We are particularly indebted to Dr. Larry R. Cooper at the U.S. Office of Naval Research and Dr |

Title | Probability, Statistical Optics, and Data Testing : A Problem Solving Approach |
Author(s) | Frieden, B.Roy |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XX, 443 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This new edition incorporates corrections of all known typographical errors in the first edition, as well as some more substantive changes. Chief among the latter is the addition of Chap. 17, on methods of estimation. As with the rest of the text, most applications and examples cited in the new chapter are from the optical perspective. The intention behind this new chapter is to empower the optical researcher with a yet broader range of research tools. Certainly a basic knowledge of estimation methods should be among these. In particular, the sections on likelihood theory and Fisher information prepare readers for the problems of optical parameter estimation and probability law estimation. Physicists and optical scientists might find this material particularly useful, since the subject of Fisher information is generally not covered in standard physical science curricula. Since the words "statistical optics" are prominent in the title of this book, their meaning needs to be clarified. There is a general tendency to overly emphasize the statistics of photons as the sine qua non of statistical optics. In view is taken, which equally emphasizes the random medium this text a wider that surrounds the photon, be it a photographic emulsion, the turbulent atmo?? sphere, a vibrating lens holder, etc. Also included are random interpretations of ostensibly deterministic phenomena, such as the Hurter-Driffield (H and D) curve of photography. Such a "random interpretation" sometimes breaks new ground, as in Chap |

Title | Electromagnetic Theory of Gratings |
Author(s) | Petit, R |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1980. |
Description | XVI, 286 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | When I was a student, in the early fifties, the properties of gratings were generally explained according to the scalar theory of optics. The grating formula (which pre?? dicts the diffraction angles for a given angle of incidence) was established, exper?? imentally verified, and intensively used as a source for textbook problems. Indeed those grating properties, we can call optical properties, were taught'in a satisfac?? tory manner and the students were able to clearly understand the diffraction and dispersion of light by gratings. On the other hand, little was said about the "energy properties", i. e. , about the prediction of efficiencies. Of course, the existence of the blaze effect was pointed out, but very frequently nothing else was taught about the efficiency curves. At most a good student had to know that, for an eche?? lette grating, the efficiency in a given order can approach unity insofar as the diffracted wave vector can be deduced from the incident one by a specular reflexion on the large facet. Actually this rule of thumb was generally sufficient to make good use of the optical gratings available about thirty years ago. Thanks to the spectacular improvements in grating manufacture after the end of the second world war, it became possible to obtain very good gratings with more and more lines per mm. Nowadays, in gratings used in the visible region, a spacing small?? er than half a micron is common |
