Title | Measurement for the Sea : Supporting the Marine Environment and the Blue Economy |
Author(s) | Daponte, Pasquale;Rossi, Giovanni Battista;Piscopo, Vincenzo |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XIII, 321 p. 115 illus., 98 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the history of humankind, the sea has always played a key role as a privileged medium for communication, commerce and contact among population centers. It constitutes an essential ecosystem, and an invaluable reservoir and source of food for all living beings. Therefore, its heath is a critical challenge for the survival of all humanity, particularly as one the most important environmental components targeted by global warming. Measuring and monitoring techniques are key tools for managing the marine environment and for supporting the Blue Economy. With this perspective, a series of annual international events, entitled MetroSea (Metrology for the Sea) was begun in 2017. Their increasing success inspired this book, which provides an anthology of tutorials dealing with a representative selection of topics of concern to a broad readership. The book covers two broad application areas, marine hydrography and meteorology, and then deals with instrumentation for measurement at sea. Typical metrological issues such as calibration and traceability, are considered, for both physical and chemical quantities. Key techniques, such as underwater acoustic investigation, remote sensing, measurement of waves and monitoring networks, are treated alongside marine geology and the monitoring of animal species. Economic and legal aspects of metrology for navigation are also discussed. Such an unparalleled wide vision of measurement for the sea will be of interest to a broad audience of scientists, engineers, economists, and their students. |

Abstract Note | This volume of the Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, Second Edition, focuses on current challenges in the field from materials and mechanics to applications of statistical and nonlinear physics in the life sciences. Challenges today are mostly in the realm of non-equilibrium systems, although certain equilibrium systems also present serious hurdles. Where possible, pairwise articles focus on a single topic, one from a theoretical perspective and the other from an experimental one, providing valuable insights. In other cases, theorists and experimentalists have collaborated on a single article. Coverage includes both quantum and classical systems, and emphasizes 1) mature fields that are not covered in the current specialist literature, (2) topics that fall through the cracks in disciplinary journals/books, or (3) developing areas where the knowledge base is large and robust and upon which future developments will depend. The result is an invaluable resource for condensed matter physicists, material scientists, engineers and life scientists |

Title | Spectral Analysis of Nonlinear Elastic Shapes |
Author(s) | Doyle, James F |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XI, 409 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book concerns the elastic stability of thin-walled structures ??? one of the most challenging problems facing structural engineers because of its high degree of nonlinearity ??? and introduces the innovative approach of using spectral analysis of the shapes and the stiffness to gain insights into the nonlinear deformations. The methodology greatly facilitates correlating the shape changes with the stiffness changes. Professor Doyle also develops specific computer procedures that complement finite element methods so that the ideas and methods are applicable to general structural problems. Basic validity of the procedures is established using key archetypal problems from buckling/post-buckling of columns, arches, curved plates, and cylindrical shells, all worked out in significant detail. The book is ideal for a wide variety of structural engineers, particularly those in aerospace and civil fields. Researchers in computational mechanics also find a rich source of new ideas for post-processing data from nonlinear analyses. Presents an innovative way of tackling nonlinear elastic stability problems with many new results and insights presented; Adopts a thoroughly modern, computationally based approach using finite elements as its basis as well as for its validations; Reinforces reader understanding with a range of practical problems encompassing arbitrary frame and shell structures; Develops concepts systematically starting with basic deformations of structural members followed by analysis of structures with coupled deformations, progressing seemlessly to the nonlinear analysis of structures and buckling/post-buckling behaviors |

Title | Analysis of Piezoelectric Semiconductor Structures |
Author(s) | Yang, Jiashi |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | VIII, 230 p. 102 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the mechanics of piezoelectric semiconductor structures where the main electromechanical coupling of interest is the interaction between mechanical fields and semiconduction. This volume stands as the first full book treatment of this multi-physical subject from the mechanics angle. The analysis of piezoelectric semiconductor structures and devices is an emerging and rapidly growing interdisciplinary area involving materials, electronics, and solid mechanics. It has direct applications in the new area of piezotronics and piezo-phototronics. The book is theoretical, beginning with a phenomenological framework and progressing to include solutions to problems fundamental to the theory and application. Dr. Yang illustrates how in piezoelectric semiconductors, mechanical fields interact with semiconduction through the piezoelectrically produced electric fields by mechanical loads. This provides the foundation of piezotronic and piezo-phototronic devices in which semiconduction is induced, affected, manipulated, or controlled by mechanical fields. Also discussing composite structures of piezoelectric dielectrics and nonpiezoelectric semiconductors as well as thermal effects, the book is an ideal basic reference on the topic for researchers. Examines for the first time the mechanics of piezoelectric semiconductors Features a systematic and concise treatment of the three-dimensional general theory, the one-dimensional theories for extension of rods and bending of beams, and the two-dimensional theories for extension and bending of plates and shells Includes many static, time-harmonic, and transient dynamic solutions |

Title | Outdoor Lighting: Physics, Vision and Perception |
Author(s) | Schreuder, Duco |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2008. |
Description | XVIII, 448 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book covers theoretical aspects that are at the basis of lighting installations. It focuses on insight, backgrounds and coherence. There are many fundamental aspects that are essential for understanding why different ways to install and use lighting give different results. A purely pragmatic approach to solving practical lighting problems will lead to pitfalls. But as this book shows, on the basis of fundamental considerations on optics, light sources and vision, causes and effects that tend to be overlooked by lighting engineers and designers can be identified. The selection of subjects in this book is based on more than 50 years of experience in studying the fundamental and practical applications of lighting and vision. The author has given classes on these topics, in master courses at post-graduate and post-doctoral levels. Audience: graduate students, researchers, designers, engineers and consultants engaged in lighting, public lighting, lighting equipment and installations |
