TitleInelastic Behaviour of Plates and Shells : IUTAM Symposium, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil August 5???9, 1985
Author(s)Bevilacqua, Luiz;Feijoo, Raul;Valid, Roger
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1986.
DescriptionXXII, 652 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDuring the last ten years a considerable volume of inform?? ation has been accumulated regarding the inelastic behaviour of materials. The increasing number of communications published in specialised journals and also the frequency of meetings in these fields, indicates a considerable research effort aimed at such topics as plasticity, creep, fatigue, visco-plasticity and the like. This fact encouraged a group of Brazilian researchers, stimulated enthusiastically by Professor P. Germain, to submit a proposal for a Symposium on the "Inelastic Behaviour of Plates and Shells" to the General Assembly of IUTAM. Brazil had recently joined IUTAM and the Brazilian Association of Mechanical Sciences was eager to host an IUTAM meeting. In the selection of the subject, it was taken into account, besides a promising number of original contributions, the interest to be raised amongst the Brazilian researchers and engineers, in order to maximise the participation of the host country. The recent steps taken in this country towards the develop?? ment of the aero-space industry, the construction of nuclear power plants a.nd the off-shore exploration of petroleum have required an intensification of research activities in several fields, structural behaviour of plates and shells being one of the most important. Therefore, the suggested theme would attract the interest or a significant group of Brazilian researchers and engineers and match the necessity for exchanging experience among leading scientists working in those fields

TitleControl of Structures
Author(s)Leipholz, U;Abdel-Rohman, M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1986.
DescriptionXII, 413 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is an outgrowth of several years of teaching and research of the two authors in the field of structural dynamics and control. The content of the book is based on structural dynamics, classical and modern control theory and involves also recent developments that took place with respect to the control of systems with distri?? buted masses. It is hoped that the book will serve the researcher and the practicing engineer in the areas of ci vi 1, mechanical and aeronautical engineering. It may also be of interest to applied mathematicians and to physicists. There is no question that the book can be used as a reference book for advanced courses in the above mentioned areas. The numerous examples will provide students with the necessary material for exercising themselves and for self?? studying. Thanks are due to Mrs. Cynthia Jones for preparing patiently and competently the typescript of the book. The services of Mrs. Linda Strouth, Solid Mechanics Division, University of Waterloo, rendered in producing the camera-ready copy of the book with great skill and devotion, are gratefully acknowledged. Special thanks go to Mr. Ir. Ad. C. Plaizier, at Martinus Nijhoff/Dr. W. Junk, who with much understanding and enthusiasm supervised the production of the book as Publisher. May the readers of it enjoy it, and may they have the fee ling of having gained something in turning to it and using it

Author(s)Lin, Y.K;Elishakoff, I
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXIII, 356 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains eighteen selected papers presented at the Second International Conference on Stochastic Structural Dynamics, which are related to new theoretical developments in the field. This and a companion volume, related to new practical applications, constitute the proceedings of the conference, and reflect the state of the art of the rapidly developing subject. The conference was held in Boca Raton, Florida during May 9-11, 1990 hosted by the Center for Applied Stochastics Research of Florida Atlantic University. A total of 20 technical sessions were organized, and attended by eighty participants from 12 countries. Special emphases of the conference were placed on two areas: applications to earthquake engineering and stochastic stability of nonlinear systems. Two sessions were dedicated to the memory of late Professor Frank Kozin, one of the founders and most active contributors to the stochastic stability theory. We are indebted to the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER) for financial support. Most credit belongs to each of the authors whose contributions were the very basis for the undoubted success of the conference. We are grateful to the reviewers who carefully refereed the contributions for these two volumes. Our special thanks are due to Mrs. Christine Mikulski, who carried out all the necessary secretarial tasks associated with the conference with dedication

DescriptionXVIII, 362 p. 6 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) initiated and sponsored an International Symposium on Nonlinear Dynamics in Engineering Systems held in 1989 in Stuttgart, FRG. The Symposium was intended to bring together scientists working in different fields of dynamics to exchange ideas and to discuss new trends with special emphasis on nonlinear dynamics in engineering systems. A Scientific Committee was appointed by the Bureau of IUTAM with the following members: S. Arimoto (Japan), F.L. Chernousko (USSR), P.J. Holmes (USA), C.S. Hsu (USA), G. looss (France), F.C. Moon (USA), W. Schiehlen (FRG), Chairman, G. Schmidt (GDR), W. Szemplinska-Stupnicka (Poland), J.M.T. Thompson (UK), H. Troger (Austria). This committee selected the participants to be invited and the papers to be presented at the Symposium. As a result of this procedure 78 active scientific participants from 22 countries followed the invitation, and 44 papers were presented in lecture and poster sessions. They are collected in this volume. At the Symposium an exhibition with experiments took place and the movie "An Introduction to the Analysis of Chaotic Dynamics" by E.J. Kreuzer et.al. was presented. The scientific lectures were devoted to the following topics: o Dynamic Structural Engineering Problems, o Analysis of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, o Bifurcation Problems, o Chaotic Dynamics and Control Problems, o Miscellaneous Problems, o Experimental and Theoretical Investigations, o Chaotic Oscillations of Engineering Systems, o Characterization of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, o Nonlinear Stochastic Systems

TitleWave Propagation in Structures : An FFT-Based Spectral Analysis Methodology
Author(s)Doyle, James F
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1989.
DescriptionX, 258 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe study of wave propagation seems very remote to many engineers, even to those who are involved in structural dynamics. I think one of the reasons for this is that the examples usually taught in school were either so simple as to be inapplicable to real world problems, or so mathematically abstruse as to be intractable. This book contains an approach, spectral analysis, that I have found to be very effective in analyzing waves. What has struck me most about this approach is how I can use the same analytic framework to do predictions as well as to manipulate experimental data. As an experimentalist, I had found it very frustrating having my analytical tools incompatible with my experiments. For example, it is experimentally impos?? sible to generate a step-function wave and yet that is the type of analytical solution available. Spectral analysis is very encompassing - it touches on analysis, numerical meth?? ods, and experimental methods. I wanted this book to do justice to its versatility, so many subjects are introduced. As a result some areas may seem a little thin and I regret this. But I do hope, nonetheless, that the bigger picture, the unity, comes across. To encourage you to try the spectral analysis approach I have included complete source code listings to some of the computer programs mentioned in the text

TitleCreep in Structures : 3rd Symposium, Leicester, UK, September 8???12, 1980
Author(s)Ponter, A.R.S;Hayhurst, D.R
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1981.
DescriptionXVI, 615 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Third IUTAM Symposium on Creep in Structures was held at Leicester University in September 1980 thereby continuing the tradition of a ten yearly review of progress in structural creep initiated by the previous symposia held at Stanford University in 1960 and Chalmers University in 1970. The thirty eight papers and their discussions cont?? ained in this volume testify to the vigour of research into the creep of structures at the present time. During the last ten years a gradual change of emphasis has occurred in creep research from studies of deformation and stability towards the description of continuum damage and creep crack propagation. At the same time design techniques have developed based upon reference stress techniques and bounding theorems, and a continued interest has been maintained in the development of constitutive equations and in stability studies. All these developments are reflected in the compos?? ition of the papers in the volume and in the discussions and reviews

TitleElastic Analysis of Slab Structures
Author(s)Negrutiu, Radu
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1987.
DescriptionX, 435 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAny practitioner who takes his profession in earnest, such that daily work is not a heavy duty but part of their life, will recognize in this book the rigorousness of the analysis and the comprehensive presentation of the problems. This professional attitude is solely able to make the research and design engineer deal with strength structures and their behaviour. Indeed, the computational means that are nowadays available permit the numerical computation of whatever problem; the pro?? gram libraries are extremely rich and programs themselves have developed intensively. Howeyer, though computers are available at any moment without restrictions on the frequency with which they are employed, they finally impoYerish the creative compe?? tency of the civil engineer. Thus, he will calculate increasingly more while devising increasingly less. He will draw less and less on the experience gained in devising and implementing bearing structures because the computational process can be repeated as often as desired over a minimum time-period by means of the available programs. \Ve note that nowadays structures are no longer investigated or economically designed to comply with the requirements of the topic of interest. :Much to the contrary, the solutions are chosen so as to comply with the capabilities of the programs. A bearing structure lives as is prescribed by its initial con?? structive data

TitleProbabilistic Methods in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures : Symposium Stockholm, Sweden June 19???21, 1984 To the Memory of Waloddi Weibull
Author(s)Eggwertz, S;Lind, N.C
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1985.
DescriptionXXVI, 610 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe IUTAM Symposium on Probabilistic Methods in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures, dedicated to the memory of Waloddi Weibull, was held in Stockholm, Sweden, June 19-21, 1984, on the initiative of the Swedish National Committee for Mech?? anics and the Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden, FFA. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together mathema?? ticians that develop the theory of stochastic processes and methods for reliability analysis, with engineers that apply these theories and methods to model loads, strengths and structures for the advancement of structural safety. Waloddi Weibull was a pioneer in this field with his many publi?? cations from the thirties until his death in 1979. He also took an active part in the formation of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics during the forties, and subsequently initiated foundation of the Swedish National Committee for Mechanics, through which Sweden joined IUTAM as a member. 116 participants from 21 countries attended the symposium, and 55 invited papers were presented in 7 scientific sessions
