DescriptionXIX, 764 p. 816 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook presents the elementary aspects of quantum computing in a mathematical form. It is intended as core or supplementary reading for physicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists taking a first course on quantum computing. It starts by introducing the basic mathematics required for quantum mechanics, and then goes on to present, in detail, the notions of quantum mechanics, entanglement, quantum gates, and quantum algorithms, of which Shor's factorisation and Grover's search algorithm are discussed extensively. In addition, the algorithms for the Abelian Hidden Subgroup and Discrete Logarithm problems are presented and the latter is used to show how the Bitcoin digital signature may be compromised. It also addresses the problem of error correction as well as giving a detailed exposition of adiabatic quantum computing. The book contains around 140 exercises for the student, covering all of the topics treated, together with an appendix of solutions

TitleCellular Automata : A Volume in the Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, Second Edition
Author(s)Adamatzky, Andrew
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2018.
Description425 illus., 190 illus. in color. eReference : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume of the Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, Second Edition, provides an authoritative introduction and overview of the latest research in cellular automata (CA) models of physical systems, emergent phenomena, computational universality, chaos, growth phenomena, phase transitions, self-organised criticality, reaction-diffusion systems, self-replications, parallel computation, and more. Fundamental topics of algorithmic complexity, algebraic groups, language theory, evolving CA, ergodic theory, synchronisation, tiling problems and undecidability and topological dynamics of CA are addressed. Cellular automata are regular uniform networks of locally-connected finite-state machines, and represent discrete systems with non-trivial behavior, including waves, patterns and travelling localisations. CA are ubiquitous: they are mathematical models of computation and computer models of natural systems. Classes of CA presented in this book include additive CA, automata in hyperbolic spaces and non-compact spaces, CA in triangular, pentagonal and hexagonal tessellations, automata with memory, quantum and reversible automata, structurally-dynamic CA, and asynchronous automata. Topics added to the second edition include: asynchronous cellular automata, stochastic cellular automata as models of reaction-diffusion processes, cellular automata hardware implementation, cellular automata basins of attraction, orbits of Bernoulli measures in cellular automata, and graphs related to reversibility and complexity in cellular. This state-of-the-art reference is unique in bringing together unequalled expertise of interdisciplinary studies at the edge of mathematics, computer science, and physics

TitleAlternative Logics. Do Sciences Need Them?
Author(s)Weingartner, Paul A
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXVII, 368 p : online resource
Abstract NoteInitially proposed as rivals of classical logic, alternative logics have become increasingly important in sciences such as quantum physics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. The contributions collected in this volume address and explore the question whether the usage of logic in the sciences, especially in modern physics, requires a deviation from classical mathematical logic. The articles in the first part of the book set the scene by describing the context and the dilemma when applying logic in science. In Part II the authors offer several logics that deviate in different ways from classical logics. The twelve papers in Part III investigate in detail specific aspects such as quantum logic, quantum computation, computer-science considerations, praxic logic, and quantum probability. Most of the contributions are revised and partially extended versions of papers presented at a conference of the same title of the Acad??mie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences held at the Internationales Forschungszentrum Salzburg in May 1999. Others have been added to complete the picture of recent research in alternative logics as they have been developed for applications in the sciences

TitleFrom Cells to Societies : Models of Complex Coherent Action
Author(s)Mikhailov, Alexander S;Calenbuhr, Vera
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionX, 302 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book shows how, by rather simple models, we can gain remarkable insights into the behavior of complex systems. It is devoted to the discussion of functional self-organization in large populations of interacting active elements. The possible forms of self-organization in such systems range from coherent collective motions in the physical coordinate space to the mutual synchronization of internal dynamics, the development of coherently operating groups, the rise of hierarchical structures, and the emergence of dynamical networks. Such processes play an important role in biological and social phenomena. The authors have chosen a series of models from physics, biochemistry, biology, sociology and economics, and will systematically discuss their general properties. The book addresses researchers and graduate students in a variety of disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology and the social sciences
