Title | Exploring the X-ray universe |
Author(s) | Frederick D. Seward, Philip A. Charles |
Edition | Second edition |
Description | 1 online resource (xiv, 358 pages) : digital, PDF file(s) |
Abstract Note | Capturing the excitement and accomplishments of X-ray astronomy, this second edition now includes a broader range of astronomical phenomena and dramatic new results from the most powerful X-ray telescopes. Covering all areas of astronomical research, ranging from the smallest to the largest objects, from neutron stars to clusters of galaxies, this textbook is ideal for undergraduate students. Each chapter starts with the basic aspects of the topic, explores the history of discoveries, and examines in detail modern observations and their significance. This new edition has been updated with results from the most recent space-based instruments, including ROSAT, BeppoSAX, ASCA, Chandra, and XMM. New chapters cover X-ray emission processes, the interstellar medium, the Solar System, and gamma-ray bursts. The text is supported by over 300 figures, with tables listing the properties of the sources, and more specialized technical points separated in boxes |
Contents Note | Machine generated contents note: 1. Birth and childhood of X-ray astronomy; 2. X-ray emission and interaction with matter; 3. Tools and techniques; 4. Solar System X-rays; 5. Title | Handbook of X-ray astronomy |
Author(s) | Keith Arnaud (ed.);Randall Smith (ed.);Aneta Siemiginowska (ed.) |
Publication | Cambridge 2011. |
Description | viii, 197p. |
Series | (Cambridge Observing Handboks for Research Astronomers) |
Abstract Note | Written for graduate students, professional astronomers and researchers who want to start working in this field, this book is a practical guide to x-ray astronomy. The handbook begins with x-ray optics, basic detector physics and CCDs, before focussing on data analysis. It introduces the reduction and calibration of x-ray data, scientific analysis, archives, statistical issues and the particular problems of highly extended sources. The book describes the main hardware used in x-ray astronomy, emphasizing the implications for data analysis. The concepts behind common x-ray astronomy data analysis software are explained. The appendices present reference material often required during data analysis. |

Title | Universe in x-rays |
Author(s) | Joachim E. Trumper (ed.);Gunther Hasinger (ed.) |
Publication | Berlin, Springer, 2008. |
Description | xix, 496p. |
Series | (Astronomy and Astrophysics Library) |
Abstract Note | In the last 45 years, X-ray astronomy has become an integral part of modern astrophysics and cosmology. There is a wide range of astrophysical objects and phenomena, where X-rays provide crucial diagnostics. In particular they are well suited to study hot plasmas and matter under extreme physical conditions in compact objects. This book summarizes the present status of X-ray astronomy in terms of observational results and their astrophysical interpretation. It is written for students, astrophysicists as well a growing community of physicists interested in the field. An introduction including historical material is followed by chapters on X-ray astronomical instrumentation. The next two parts summarize in 17 chapters the present knowledge on various classes of X-ray sources in the galactic and extragalactic realm. While the X-ray astronomical highlights discussed in this book are mainly based on results from ROSAT, ASCA, RXTE, BeppoSAX, Chandra and XMM-Newton, a final chapter provides an outlook on observational capabilities and projects discussed for the future.
