Title | Micromechanics and Nanoscale Effects : MEMS, Multi-Scale Materials and Micro-Flows |
Author(s) | Harik, Vasyl Michael;Li-Shi Luo |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2004. |
Description | XV, 240 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume consists of the state-of-the-art reports on new developments in micromechanics and the modeling of nanoscale effects, and is a companion book to the recent Kluwer volume on nanomechanics and mul- scale modeling (it is entitled Trends in Nanoscale Mechanics). The two volumes grew out of a series of discussions held at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), lectures and other events shared by many researchers from the national research laboratories and academia. The key events include the 2001 Summer Series of Round-Table Discussions on Nanotechnology at ICASE Institute (NASA LaRC) organized by Drs. V. M. Harik and M. D. Salas and the 2002 NASA LaRC Workshop on Multi-scale Modeling. The goal of these interactions was to foster collaborations between academic researchers and the ICASE Institute (NASA LaRC), a universi- based institute, which has pioneered world-class computational, theoretical and experimental research in the disciplines that are important to NASA. Editors gratefully acknowledge help of Ms. E. Todd (ICASE, NASA LaRC), the ICASE Director M. D. Salas and all reviewers, in particular, Dr. B. Diskin (ICASE/NIA, NASA LaRC), Prof. R. Haftka (University of Florida), Dr. V. M. Harik (ICASE/Swales Aerospace, NASA LaRC), Prof |

Title | Multiparameter Equations of State : An Accurate Source of Thermodynamic Property Data |
Author(s) | Span, Roland |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000. |
Description | XVIII, 367 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | As basis of printed property charts and tables, empirical multiparameter equations of state are the most important source of accurate thermodynamic property data for more than 30 years now. However, due to increasing demands on the accuracy of thermodynamic property data in computerised calculations, to the availability of appropriate software tools, and to increasing computer power, such formulations became a valuable tool for every days work nowadays. This development has increased the number of scientists, engineers, and students who are working with empirical multiparameter equations of state. Nevertheless, the common knowledge on this kind of thermodynamic property models and on the ongoing progress in this scientific discipline is still very limited. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available know-how from the fundamentals to very recent developments in a single reference. Since the book is dedicated both to common users and to scientists who want to engage themselves in the development of multiparameter equations of state, general topics like the application of empirical equations of state or typical performances of different classes of formulations are discussed separately from advanced topics like the optimisation of the functional form or the improved representation of properties in the critical region. In this way, the book becomes a useful reference for readers with very different background. 480 references, 352 equations, 154 figures, and 36 tables underline the ambitiousness of this approach |

Title | Smart Control of Turbulent Combustion |
Author(s) | Yoshida, A |
Publication | Tokyo, Springer Japan, 2001. |
Description | VIII, 98 p. 32 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The International Workshop on Turbulent Combustion was held September 14-15, 2000, at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, to review the present status of turbu?? lent combustion studies. Reviews were presented by Prof. F. A. Williams of the Uni?? versity of California, San Diego; Prof. Ken Bray of the University of Cambridge; and Prof. Jay Gore of Purdue University. Dr. Howard Baum of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Dr. Jim McDonough of the University of Ken?? tucky participated in the discussion. Some ten papers, describing the latest findings of Japanese studies in this field, were given at the meeting. About half of these studies are supported by a national project, the Open and Integrated Research Pro?? gram, Creation of New Functionalized Thermo-Fluid Systems by Turbulence Con?? trol, that started only recently under the sponsorship of the Science and Technology Agency of Japan. The meeting was a great success and gave impetus and a sense of perspective to young Japanese researchers through the excellent reviews and valu?? able comments their work received. I believe that this kind of open discussion is indispensable for any project to produce a good outcome, and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who participated in the meeting. Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to Prof. Tatsuya Hasegawa of the Nagoya Institute of Technology, Prof. Akira Yoshida of Tokyo Denki University, Prof |

Author(s) | Cleland, Andrew N |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XII, 436 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This text provides an introduction, at the level of an advanced student in engineering or physics, to the field of nanomechanics and nanomechanical devices. It provides a unified discussion of solid mechanics, with notation consistent with modern convention. A discussion of electrical transducer applications is included, covering such topics as piezoresistance and piezoelecticity. The text includes a discussion of fundamental and spurious sources of noise, and how these sources affect both the amplitude and phase of a mechanical resonator. A brief discussion of nonlinearity in mechanical systems is given. Demonstrated applications of these devices, as well as an introduction to fabrication techniques, are also discussed; a primer on optical as well as electron beam lithography is given in two concise chapters. The text concludes with an overview of potential future technologies, including a discussion of carbon nanotubes and other molecular assemblies |

Title | Mixing of Solids |
Author(s) | Weinek??tter, Ralf;Gericke, H |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000. |
Description | XVI, 156 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is a welcome edition to the Particle Technology Series, formerly Powder Technology Series. It is the second book in the series which describes powder mixing and we make no excuses for that. The topic of powder mixing is fundamental to powder technology and is one which always aroses interest. That will not change. As powder products become more complex they will pose new mixing problems. The solutions lie in the intelligent use of equipment, an understanding of powder properties and a good knowledge of basic statistics. The authors of this book have presented those three ingredients with great clarity. The book is based on long experience and deep thought, I have enjoyed reading it and am pleased to recommend it. Delft University of Technology, NL-Delft, July 1999 Brian Scarlett, Series Editor IX VII Foreword to the English Edition In response to many enquiries from industrial organisations and institutes involved with the technology of processing bulk materials, we are pleased to present the English edition ,,Mixing of Solids". The text is based on the first edition written in the German language "Mischen von Schiittgiitern" [1]. The English version has been revised and updated to include the most recent re?? search developments, the conclusions of which have been taken into account |

Title | Hydraulic and Electric-Hydraulic Control Systems |
Author(s) | Walters, R.B |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000. |
Description | XIII, 331 p. 26 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Force and motion control systems of varying degrees of sophistication have shaped the lives of all individuals living in industrialized countries all over the world, and together with communication technology are largely responsible for the high standard ofliving prevalent in many communities. The brains of the vast majority of current control systems are electronic, in the shape of computers, microprocessors or programmable logic controllers (PLC), the nerves are provided by sensors, mainly electromech?? anical transducers, and the muscle comprises the drive system, in most cases either electric, pneumatic or hydraulic. The factors governing the choice of the most suitable drive are the nature of the application, the performance specification, size, weight, environ?? mental and safety constraints, with higher power levels favouring hydraulic drives. Past experience, especially in the machine tool sector, has clearly shown that, in the face of competition from electric drives, it is difficult to make a convincing case for hydraulic drives at the bottom end of the power range, specifically at fractional horsepower level. A further, and frequently overriding factor in the choice of drive is the familiarity of the system designer with a particular discipline, which can inhibit the selection of the optimum and most cost-effective solution for a given application. One of the objectives of this book is to help the electrical engineer overcome his natural reluctance to apply any other than electric drives |

Title | Laser-Strophometry : High-Resolution Techniques for Velocity Gradient Measurements in Fluid Flows |
Author(s) | Staude, Wilfried |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001. |
Description | XV, 180 p. 2 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book describes techniques that allow the measurement of arbitrary velocity gradient components in fluids with high spatial and temporal resolution, e.g. turbulent fluids. The techniques are based on the properties of scattered laser light. The book gives a detailed and rigorous treatment of the physical and mathematical background in a pedagogical presentation accessible to students in physics and engineering. From both the theoretical and experimental points of view, four different schemes are discussed in detail; the schemes differ in the way the velocity of the moving pattern of the scattered laser light is measured |
