Author(s)Luis C. Ho (ed.)
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2004.
Descriptionxxi, 474p.
Series(Carnegie Observatories Astrophysics Series; 01)
Contents NoteThe year 2002 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Carnegie Observatories. To commemorate our Centennial, we thought it would be fitting to host a series of scientific meetings, oragnized by Carnegie astronomers, on a range of topics that both celebrates Carnegie' past astronomical contributions and recognizes it current, diverse research interests. In the end, we organized four international-level meetings, held in Pasadena, from Fall 2002 to Winter 2003. The Carnegie Observatories Centennial Symposia covered the following topics: 1. Coevolution of black holes and galaxies 2. Measuring and modelling the universe 3. Clusters of galaxies : Probes of cosmological structure and galaxy evolution 4. Origin and evolution of the elements

TitleGravity and Strings
Author(s)Tomas Ortin
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2004.
Description684p.
Series(Cambridge monographs on mathematical physics)
Abstract NoteOne appealing feature of string theory is that it provides a theory of quantum gravity. Gravity and Strings is a self-contained, pedagogical exposition of this theory, its foundations and its basic results. In Part I, the foundations are traced back to the very early special-relativistic field theories of gravity, showing how such theories lead to general relativity. Gauge theories of gravity are then discussed and used to introduce supergravity theories. In Part II, some of the most interesting solutions of general relativity and its generalizations are studied. The final Part presents and studies string theory from the effective action point of view, using the results found earlier in the book as background. This book will be useful as a reference book for graduate students and researchers, as well as a complementary textbook for courses on gravity, supergravity and string theory.

TitleBlack holes : The membrane paradigm
Author(s)Kip S. Thorne (ed.);Richard H. Price (ed.);Douglas A. Macdonald (ed.)
PublicationNew Haven, Yale University Press, 1986.
Descriptionxii, 367p.
Contents NoteThis book is a pedagogical introduction to the physics of black holes, with emphasis on a viewpoint that carries the name "membrane paradigm". The membrane paradigm is a translation of the mathematical and physical formalism for black holes into a form that is specially adapted to astrophysical research. About sixty percent of the material contained in the book is drawn - with extensive pedagogical changes - from research articles published in journals such as the Physical Review and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The remaining forty percent is new material based on the author's previously unpublished resesearch.
