Abstract NoteThe fourteen award-winning essays in this volume discuss a range of novel ideas and controversial??topics that could decisively influence the course of human life on Earth.??Their??authors address, in accessible language,??issues as diverse as:??enabling our social systems to learn; research in biological??engineering and artificial intelligence; mending and??enhancing minds; improving the way we do, and teach, science; living in the??here and now; and the value of play. ?? The essays are enhanced versions of the prize-winning entries submitted to the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi) essay competition in 2014. FQXi, catalyzes, supports, and disseminates research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology, particularly new frontiers and innovative ideas integral to a deep understanding of reality, but unlikely to be supported by conventional funding sources

TitleInformation Handling in Astronomy
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000.
DescriptionX, 242 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe pilot boat just moved away and'its lights are already fading towards the coast of Northeastern Queensland over which Saturn is going to set. There is still quite some time to go before dawn. The big ship has now regained her cruise speed following its roughly northwesterly route in the South Coral Sea along the chain of nearby reefs. Few people are around at this time, except a dozen early birds sharing some 'shipshaping' exercise on the top deck and taking advantage of the relative coolness of the night. On my way down to the stateroom, I cannot but stop once more in front of that elegant composition by British artist Brigid Collins (1963-) hanging in the monumental staircase between Decks 7 and 8. That piece 2 of art, a 1.8x 1.8m oil on canvas plus collage entitled Berinl in honour of the Danish explorer, gathers together many navigation-related themes of the time: Suns, Moons, planets, sky maps, astrolabes, small telescopes, as well as drawings, diagrams and charts of all kinds. It is somehow a digest of how astronomical information was then collected, made available, and used

TitleRadiation in Enclosures : Elliptic Boundary Value Problem
Author(s)Mbiock, Aristide;Weber, Roman
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionXIII, 211 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis graduate textbook is concerned with both the formulation and the solution of radiation heat transfer problems in enclosures. The book is essentially self-contained and includes a brief historical survey. The foundations are carefully discussed from the point of view of the exact mathematical basis of boundary value problems and their variational solutions as well as of the physical foundations. The computational methods developed by the authors are used in engineering applications. The combinaton of exact mathematical modelling with numerical skills makes this a unique textbook

TitleEducating the Engineer for the 21st Century : Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Global Engineering Education
Author(s)Weichert, D;Rauhut, B;Schmidt, R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2001.
DescriptionXII, 314 p : online resource
Abstract NoteUpspeeding technological evolution and globalisation characterise today???s and future lives of engineers. It is vital for all institutions involved in engineering education to keep pace and to anticipate future needs. The herein presented collection of papers results from the Workshop on Global Engineering Education (GEE???3) which took place at Aachen University of Technology, 18 ??? 20 October 2000. In this meeting more than 150 specialists from 25 countries discussed the topic ???Educating the Engineer for the Century???. Which role to attribute to non-technical qualifications? How to integrate ethical aspects in education? Do we have to define international standards in education? What about quality control? What is the potential of new media for knowledge transfer? How to organise lifelong learning for engineers? - These are some of the questions discussed among representatives of industries, educational institutions, politicians and individuals during this meeting. According to the sessions of the workshop, the book is subdivided into chapters covering the areas ???Role of the Global Engineer in Meeting the Challenges of Society in the Century???, ???Internationality and Interdisciplinarity???, ???Engineering Education in Emerging Economies???, ???European Bachelor and Master Programmes???, ???Developing Personal Skills to be a Global Engineer???. Three chapters deal with successful practice in engineering education covering the topics ???Programmes, Curricula and Evaluation???, ???Educational Concepts???, and ???University-Industry Partnership, Design Projects???

TitleInformation Handling in Astronomy - Historical Vistas
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionXII, 298 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is dedicated to the memory of Gis??le Mersch whose life ended prematurely in June 2002. Back in the 1970s, when few people were using them, Gis??le introduced me to the arcane secrets of then advanced m- tivariate statistical methodologies. I was already involved in more classical statistical studies undertaken at Paris Observatory with Jean Jung: developing and applying maxim- likelihood algorithms to stellar photometric and kinematic data in order to derive absolute luminosities, distances and velocities in the solar neighb- hood. But what could be envisaged with those methodologies was something of another dimension: for the first time, I could really see how to extract information from massive amounts of data without calling for elaborated physical or mechanical theories. Several pioneering applications were developed under Gis??le???s guidance and with her collaboration to study the delicate interface between spect- scopic and photometric data. Thus errors in spectral classifications were investigated as well as predictions of spectral classifications from pho- metric indices (see Heck 1976, Heck et al. 1977, Heck & Mersch 1980 and Mersch & Heck 1980), with very interesting results for the time. Gis??le also took part in studies of period determination algorithms (see Mersch & Heck 1981, Manfroid et al. 1983 and Heck et al. 1985)

TitleThree Dimensional Creativity : Three Navigations to Extend our Thoughts
Author(s)Lee, Kwang Hyung
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2014.
DescriptionX, 87 p. 94 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIs creativity something that we are simply born with and cannot hone with effort? Some say that creativity cannot be cultivated. Is it true? In general, our thinking sticks to reality unless there is any external stimulation. With our thinking fixed on a certain situation, it becomes difficult to come up with a fresh idea. In this regard, three questions are suggested: (1) Question of Time: When a problem arises, question yourself on a time axis first of all. How would the matter be handled 10 or 20 years from now? (2) Question of Space: Ask yourself some questions on its spatial elements. How would the matter be handled in Saudi Arabia or in China? (3) Question of Field: Apply the given problem in a variety of fields. How would the matter be handled in the field of music or electronic engineering? The three questions suggested here are given on the three axes: time, space, and field, and this book deals with theoretical and practical aspects on the topics. In this way it is a unique book about the systematic method of developing creativity, which will have appeal to researchers and students in multidisciplinary fields from neuroscience to physics, and engineering and computer science, as well as a general public
