TitleNonlinear Analysis, Differential Equations and Control
Author(s)Clarke, F.H;Stern, R.J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999.
DescriptionXIX, 602 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteRecent years have witnessed important developments in those areas of the mathematical sciences where the basic model under study is a dynamical system such as a differential equation or control process. Many of these recent advances were made possible by parallel developments in nonlinear and nonsmooth analysis. The latter subjects, in general terms, encompass differential analysis and optimization theory in the absence of traditional linearity, convexity or smoothness assumptions. In the last three decades it has become increasingly recognized that nonlinear and nonsmooth behavior is naturally present and prevalent in dynamical models, and is therefore significant theoretically. This point of view has guided us in the organizational aspects of this ASI. Our goals were twofold: We intended to achieve "cross fertilization" between mathematicians who were working in a diverse range of problem areas, but who all shared an interest in nonlinear and nonsmooth analysis. More importantly, it was our goal to expose a young international audience (mainly graduate students and recent Ph. D. 's) to these important subjects. In that regard, there were heavy pedagogical demands placed upon the twelve speakers of the ASI, in meeting the needs of such a gathering. The talks, while exposing current areas of research activity, were required to be as introductory and comprehensive as possible. It is our belief that these goals were achieved, and that these proceedings bear this out. Each of the twelve speakers presented a mini-course of four or five hours duration

TitleSystems of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations
Author(s)Ball, J.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983.
DescriptionX, 481 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the proceedings of a NATO/London Mathematical Society Advanced Study Institute held in Oxford from 25 July - 7 August 1982. The institute concerned the theory and applications of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, with emphasis on techniques appropriate to systems of more than one equation. Most of the lecturers and participants were analysts specializing in partial differential equations, but also present were a number of numerical analysts, workers in mechanics, and other applied mathematicians. The organizing committee for the institute was J.M. Ball (Heriot-Watt), T.B. Benjamin (Oxford), J. Carr (Heriot-Watt), C.M. Dafermos (Brown), S. Hildebrandt (Bonn) and J.S. pym (Sheffield) . The programme of the institute consisted of a number of courses of expository lectures, together with special sessions on different topics. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for the care they took in the preparation of their talks, and S.S. Antman, A.J. Chorin, J.K. Hale and J.E. Marsden for the organization of their special sessions. The institute was made possible by financial support from NATO, the London Mathematical Society, the u.S. Army Research Office, the u.S. Army European Research Office, and the u.S. National Science Foundation. The lectures were held in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, and residential accommodation was provided at Hertford College

TitlePartially Integrable Evolution Equations in Physics
Author(s)Conte, R;Boccara, N
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1990.
Description626 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the many physical phenomena ruled by partial differential equations, two extreme fields are currently overcrowded due to recent considerable developments: 1) the field of completely integrable equations, whose recent advances are the inverse spectral transform, the recursion operator, underlying Hamiltonian structures, Lax pairs, etc 2) the field of dynamical systems, often built as models of observed physical phenomena: turbulence, intermittency, Poincare sections, transition to chaos, etc. In between there is a very large region where systems are neither integrable nor nonintegrable, but partially integrable, and people working in the latter domain often know methods from either 1) or 2). Due to the growing interest in partially integrable systems, we decided to organize a meeting for physicists active or about to undertake research in this field, and we thought that an appropriate form would be a school. Indeed, some of the above mentioned methods are often adaptable outside their original domain and therefore worth to be taught in an interdisciplinary school. One of the main concerns was to keep a correct balance between physics and mathematics, and this is reflected in the list of courses

TitleHamiltonian Systems with Three or More Degrees of Freedom
Author(s)Sim??, Carles
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999.
DescriptionXXIV, 658 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA survey of current knowledge about Hamiltonian systems with three or more degrees of freedom and related topics. The Hamiltonian systems appearing in most of the applications are non-integrable. Hence methods to prove non-integrability results are presented and the different meaning attributed to non-integrability are discussed. For systems near an integrable one, it can be shown that, under suitable conditions, some parts of the integrable structure, most of the invariant tori, survive. Many of the papers discuss near-integrable systems. From a topological point of view, some singularities must appear in different problems, either caustics, geodesics, moving wavefronts, etc. This is also related to singularities in the projections of invariant objects, and can be used as a signature of these objects. Hyperbolic dynamics appear as a source on unpredictable behaviour and several mechanisms of hyperbolicity are presented. The destruction of tori leads to Aubrey-Mather objects, and this is touched on for a related class of systems. Examples without periodic orbits are constructed, against a classical conjecture. Other topics concern higher dimensional systems, either finite (networks and localised vibrations on them) or infinite, like the quasiperiodic Schr??dinger operator or nonlinear hyperbolic PDE displaying quasiperiodic solutions. Most of the applications presented concern celestial mechanics problems, like the asteroid problem, the design of spacecraft orbits, and methods to compute periodic solutions

TitleComputation of Curves and Surfaces
Author(s)Dahmen, Wolfgang;Gasca, Mariano;Micchelli, Charles A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1990.
DescriptionX, 536 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAssembled here is a collection of articles presented at a NATO ADVANCED STU?? DY INSTITUTE held at Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain during the period of July 10th to 21st, 1989. In addition to the editors of these proceedings Professor Larry L. Schumaker from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, served as a member of the international organizing committee. The contents of the contribu?? tions fall within the heading of COMPUTATION OF CURVES AND SURFACES and therefore address mathematical and computational issues pertaining to the dis?? play, modeling, interrogation and representation of complex geometrical objects in various scientific and technical environments. As is the intent of the NATO ASI program the meeting was two weeks in length and the body of the scientific activities was organized around prominent experts. Each of them presented lectures on his current research activity. We were fortunate to have sixteen distinguished invited speakers representing nine NATO countries: W. Bohm (Federal Republic of Germany), C. de Boor (USA), C.K. Chui (USA), W. Dahmen (Federal Republic of Germany), F. Fontanella (Italy), M. Gasca (Spain), R. Goldman (Canada), T.N.T. Goodman (UK), J.A. Gregory (UK), C. Hoffman (USA), J. Hoschek (Federal Republic of Germany), A. Le Mehaute (France), T. Lyche (Norway), C.A. Micchelli (USA), 1.1. Schumaker (USA), C. Traas (The Netherlands). The audience consisted of both young researchers as well as established scientists from twelve NATO countries and several non-NATO countries

TitleAdvances in the Theory of Fr??chet Spaces
Author(s)Terziogammalu, T
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1989.
DescriptionXVIII, 364 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFrechet spaces have been studied since the days of Banach. These spaces, their inductive limits and their duals played a prominent role in the development of the theory of locally convex spaces. Also they are natural tools in many areas of real and complex analysis. The pioneering work of Grothendieck in the fifties has been one of the important sources of inspiration for research in the theory of Frechet spaces. A structure theory of nuclear Frechet spaces emerged and some important questions posed by Grothendieck were settled in the seventies. In particular, subspaces and quotient spaces of stable nuclear power series spaces were completely characterized. In the last years it has become increasingly clear that the methods used in the structure theory of nuclear Frechet spaces actually provide new insight to linear problems in diverse branches of analysis and lead to solutions of some classical problems. The unifying theme at our Workshop was the recent developments in the theory of the projective limit functor. This is appropriate because of the important role this theory had in the recent research. The main results of the structure theory of nuclear Frechet spaces can be formulated and proved within the framework of this theory. A major area of application of the theory of the projective limit functor is to decide when a linear operator is surjective and, if it is, to determine whether it has a continuous right inverse

TitleIntegrable Systems, Quantum Groups, and Quantum Field Theories
Author(s)Ibort, Alberto;Rodr??guez, M.A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionXI, 502 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn many ways the last decade has witnessed a surge of interest in the interplay between theoretical physics and some traditional areas of pure mathematics. This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO-ASI Summer School on `Recent Problems in Mathematical Physics' held at Salamanca, Spain (1992), offering a pedagogical and updated approach to some of the problems that have been at the heart of these events. Among them, we should mention the new mathematical structures related to integrability and quantum field theories, such as quantum groups, conformal field theories, integrable statistical models, and topological quantum field theories, that are discussed at length by some of the leading experts on the areas in several of the lectures contained in the book. Apart from these, traditional and new problems in quantum gravity are reviewed. Other contributions to the School included in the book range from symmetries in partial differential equations to geometrical phases in quantum physics. The book is addressed to researchers in the fields covered, PhD students and any scientist interested in obtaining an updated view of the subjects

TitleSolving Frontier Problems of Physics: The Decomposition Method
Author(s)Adomian, G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXIV, 354 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Adomian decomposition method enables the accurate and efficient analytic solution of nonlinear ordinary or partial differential equations without the need to resort to linearization or perturbation approaches. It unifies the treatment of linear and nonlinear, ordinary or partial differential equations, or systems of such equations, into a single basic method, which is applicable to both initial and boundary-value problems. This volume deals with the application of this method to many problems of physics, including some frontier problems which have previously required much more computationally-intensive approaches. The opening chapters deal with various fundamental aspects of the decomposition method. Subsequent chapters deal with the application of the method to nonlinear oscillatory systems in physics, the Duffing equation, boundary-value problems with closed irregular contours or surfaces, and other frontier areas. The potential application of this method to a wide range of problems in diverse disciplines such as biology, hydrology, semiconductor physics, wave propagation, etc., is highlighted. For researchers and graduate students of physics, applied mathematics and engineering, whose work involves mathematical modelling and the quantitative solution of systems of equations
