TitleNavigating the night sky: How to Identify the Stars and Constellations
Author(s)Guiherme De Almeida
PublicationLondon, Springer-Verlag, 2004.
Descriptionxii, 205p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteThis book will interest anyone who marvels at the night sky and would like to learn to recognise constellations and identify the brightest stars by name. Renowned amateur astronomer, Guilherme de Almeida, dispels the myth that specialist knowledge and elaborate instruments are a prerequisite for all astronomical observation. His book emphasizes the point that getting to know the night sky with the naked eye is an essential platform from which to start any astronomical observation. Step-by-step, the reader is guided through the knowledge needed to recognise key constellations, identify stars and planets, and interpret changes in the overall appearance of the sky throughout the year. The text is enhanced by the use of maps and illustrations, making this practical guide an invaluable text for all but the most advanced amateur astronomers.

TitlePractical astrophotography
Author(s)Jeffrey R. Charles
PublicationLondon, Springer-Verlag, 2000.
Descriptionxvii, 301p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteAlmost all amateur astronomers want to take photographs of the night sky. For all but the simplest star-trail pictures, this involves machinery - a telescope drive - to track the stars, essential to compensate for the rotation of the earth. The task becomes even more complicated when photographing very small or very faint objects that require high magnification or very long exposure times. Amateurs have many options according to their requirements, technical ability, and budget. Astrophotography for Amateurs looks at all the possibilities, including normal ("wet") photography, CCD imaging, and modern techniques of computer enhancement. There are sections about photographing different classes of astronomical object from the Moon to faint nebulae, as well as a thorough look at the equipment needed.

TitlePattern asterisms: A New Way to Chart the Stars
Author(s)John Chiravalle
PublicationLondon, Springer-Verlag, 2011.
Descriptionxiv, 172p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteOrion is a familiar constellation. He even looks like a hunter – at least it’s easy to visualize his belt and sword. Since the very beginning of astronomy, people have looked up at the night sky and constructed patterns out of the almost random scattering of stars. The fact that the constellations are still used today reflects their usefulness in identifying bright stars in the rotating dome of the sky But why stop there? What applies to big groups of stars can also be applied to smaller ones – so here is a set of memorable mini-constellations to help astronomers identify and remember stars in typical binocular or low-magnification telescopic fields. Size, stellar magnitudes, and coordinates are provided, along with north direction, star-hopping instructions and Sky Atlas 2000 references. Not only is this book a new and effective aid to navigating the night sky, it’s also the basis of a great group activity for star parties – guessing and visualizing entirely new star patterns!

TitleVisual astronomy under dark skies: A New Approach to Observing Deep Space
Author(s)Antony Cooke
PublicationLondon, 1. Springer 2. Springer-Verlag, 2005.
Descriptionx, 180p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteModern astronomical telescopes, along with other advances in technology, have brought the deep sky – star clusters, nebulae and the galaxies – within visual reach of amateur astronomers. It isn’t necessary to image deep-sky objects in order to see them; you look at them in real-time by using modern observing techniques and enhancement technology. The first requirement is a truly dark observing site. Given a location with clear, dark night skies everything else follows… this book contains all you need to know about what to observe, how to get superb views of faint and distant astronomical objects, and how to use the best of today’s commercial equipment for visual observing.

TitleVisual astronomy in the suburbs: A Guide to Spectacular Viewing
Author(s)Antony Cooke
PublicationLondon, 1. Springer 2. Springer-Verlag, 2003.
Descriptionxii, 265p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteMost amateur astronomers, because they live in or near cities, have to carry out their observing from relatively light-polluted sites. It is possible to reduce the effects of a poor location by the use of CCD imaging, but many observers prefer to look at astronomical objects rather than photograph them. Skill, observing techniques, and modern technology - such as image intensifiers - can now be used to astonishing effect to observe the night sky in real-time. Illustrating the book with images and some of his own superb drawings, Antony Cooke explains how to observe some of the most spectacular objects from less than perfect observing sites.

TitleObserving variable stars
Author(s)Gerry A. Good
PublicationLondon, Springer-Verlag, 2003.
Descriptionviii, 284 p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteObserving variable stars is one of the major contributions amateur astronomers make to science. There are 36,000 variable stars listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, so it is clearly impossible for the limited number of professional observatories to target even the majority of them. That's where amateur astronomers come in - thousands of them turning their telescopes to the sky every night. Variable star observing is the most popular of "real science" activities for amateurs, and Gerry Good's book provides everything needed. The first part of the book provides a highly detailed account of the various classes of variable star, with examples, illustrations and physical descriptions. The second section covers practical aspects of observing, everything from preparation and planning, through observing techniques, to data management and reduction.

TitleComplete CD guide to the universe
Author(s)Richard Harshaw
PublicationLondon, Springer-Verlag, 2007.
Descriptionxiv, 120p.+CD-ROM
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteThe atlas covers the whole range of objects viewable by amateur astronomers with 8 - to 11-inch telescopes, north of about latitude +40 degrees. Everything described here can be observed from suburban sites. Large-scale finder charts - in both normal and mirror-image "SCT" views - along with the extensive list of 14,000 objects provide a detailed observing guide for almost any practical amateur astronomer. Around 10,750 of the objects are double or multiple stars; the remaining 3000 or so represent the other classes of deep-sky objects. Double stars dominate this work for two reasons. First, for telescopes of modest aperture they are by far the most numerous type of object and second, double stars are usually bright enough to be easily observed from urban sites. The other deep-sky objects include many galaxies (1573 of them), and although dark-sky sites are of course best, many of these can be seen in skies that most amateurs would write off as hopeless for the task. There are 580 open clusters, 109 globular clusters, 148 planetary nebulae, plus a few others.

TitleAstrophysics is easy!: An Introduction for the Amateur Astronomer
Author(s)Michael Inglis
PublicationLondon, Springer-Verlag, 2007.
Descriptionxvii, 204p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteAstrophysics is Easy! begins by looking at the H-R diagram and other basic tools of astrophysics, then ranges across the universe, from a first look at the interstellar medium and nebulae, through the birth, evolution and death of stars, to the physics of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. A unique feature of this book is the way that Dr. Inglis lists example objects for practical observation at every stage, so that practical astronomers can go and look at the object or objects under discussion – using only easily-available commercial amateur equipment.
