TitleTIM PEAKE and BRITAIN'S ROAD TO SPACE
Author(s)Seedhouse, Erik
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXXI, 245 p. 130 illus., 126 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book puts the reader in the flight suit of Britain???s first male astronaut, Tim Peake. It chronicles his life, along with the Principia mission and the down-to-the-last-bolt descriptions of life aboard the ISS, by way of the hurdles placed by the British government and the rigors of training at Russia???s Star City military base. In addition, this book discusses the learning curves required in astronaut and mission training and the complexity of the technologies required to launch an astronaut and keep them alive for months on end. This book underscores the fact that technology and training, unlike space, do not exist in a vacuum; complex technical systems, like the ISS, interact with the variables of human personality, and the cultural background of the astronauts.

TitleThe Lost Constellations : A History of Obsolete, Extinct, or Forgotten Star Lore
Author(s)Barentine, John C
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXX, 506 p. 257 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteCasual stargazers are familiar with many classical figures and asterisms composed of bright stars (e.g., Orion and the Plough),??but??this book reveals not just the constellations of today but those of yesteryear.??The history of the human identification of??constellations among the stars is explored through the stories of some influential celestial cartographers whose works determined whether new inventions survived. The history of how the modern set of 88 constellations was defined by the professional astronomy community is recounted, explaining how the constellations described in the book became permanently ???extinct.??? ??Dr. Barentine??addresses why??some figures were tried and discarded, and also directs observers to how those figures can??still be picked out on a clear night if one knows where to look. These lost constellations are described in great detail using historical references, ennabling observers to rediscover them on their own surveys of the sky.??Treatment of the obsolete constellations as extant features of the night sky adds a new dimension to stargazing that merges history with the accessibility and immediacy of the night sky

TitleThe Great Canoes in the Sky : Starlore and Astronomy of the South Pacific
Author(s)Chadwick, Stephen Robert;Paviour-Smith, Martin
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXVII, 233 p. 181 illus., 149 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NotePresenting spectacular photographs of astronomical objects of the southern sky, all taken by author Stephen Chadwick, this book explores what peoples of the South Pacific see when they look up at the heavens and what they have done with this knowledge. From wives killing brothers to emus rising out of the desert and great canoes in the sky, this book offers the perfect blend of science, tradition and mythology to bring to life the most famous sights in the heavens above the southern hemisphere. The authors place this starlore in the context of contemporary understandings of astronomy. The night sky of southern societies is as rich in culture as it is in stars. Stories, myths and legends based on constellations, heavenly bodies and other night sky phenomena have played a fundamental role in shaping the culture of pre-modern civilizations throughout the world. Such starlore continues to influence societies throughout the Pacific to this day, with cultures throughout the region ??? from Australia and New Zealand in the south to New Guinea and Micronesia in the north - using traditional cosmology as a means of interpreting various aspects of everyday life

TitleThe Rise of Radio Astronomy in the Netherlands : The People and the Politics
Author(s)Elbers, Astrid
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIV, 240 p. 40 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteRadio astronomy was born during the Second World War, but as this book explains, the history of early Dutch radio astronomy is in several respects rather anomalous in comparison to the development of radio astronomy in other countries. The author describes how these very differences led the Netherlands to become one of the world leaders in radio astronomy. Dominated by the Leiden astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort, the field embarked on an era of success, and to this day, the country still holds this leading position. To tell this story, the book focuses on three key events in the period 1940-1970, namely the construction of the radio telescopes in Kootwijk (1948), in Dwingeloo (1956), and in Westerbork (1970). These projects show that Dutch radio astronomers must not be seen as merely scientists, but also as strategic lobbyists, networkers and organizers in a specific political and economic context. It was in the process of planning, designing and constructing these instruments that the interests of the astronomers, industrial partners, politicians and lobby groups merged to create today's existing research centers for radio astronomy

TitleBode???s Law and the Discovery of Juno : Historical Studies in Asteroid Research
Author(s)Cunningham, Clifford J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIII, 304 p. 205 illus., 39 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteJohann Bode developed a so-called law of planetary distances best known as Bode???s Law. The story of the discovery of Juno in 1804 by Karl Harding tells how Juno fit into that scheme and is examined as it relates to the philosopher Georg Hegel???s 1801 thesis that there could be no planets between Mars and Jupiter. By 1804 that gap was not only filled but had three residents: Ceres, Pallas and Juno! When Juno was discovered no one could have imagined its study would call into question Newton???s law of gravity, or be the impetus for developing the mathematics of the fast Fourier transform by Carl Gauss. Clifford Cunningham, a dedicated scholar, opens to scrutiny this critical moment of astronomical discovery, continuing the story of asteroid begun in earlier volumes of this series. The fascinating issues raised by the discovery of Juno take us on an extraordinary journey. The revelation of the existence of this new class of celestial bodies transformed our understanding of the Solar System, the implications of which are thoroughly discussed in terms of Romantic Era science, philosophy, poetry, mathematics and astronomy. The account given here is based on both English and foreign correspondence and scientific papers, most of which are translated for the first time

TitleStudies of Pallas in the Early Nineteenth Century : Historical Studies in Asteroid Research
Author(s)Cunningham, Clifford J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIII, 477 p. 326 illus., 137 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteBased on extensive primary sources, many never previously translated into English, this is the definitive account of the discovery of Pallas as it went from being classified as a new planet to reclassification as the second of a previously unknown group of celestial objects. Cunningham, a dedicated scholar of asteroids, includes a large set of newly translated correspondence as well as the many scientific papers about Pallas in addition to sections of Schroeter's 1805 book on the subject. It was Olbers who discovered Pallas, in 1802, the second of many asteroids that would be officially identified as such. From the Gold Medal offered by the Paris Academy to solve the mystery of Pallas' gravitational perturbations to Gauss' Pallas Anagram, the asteroid remained a lingering mystery to leading thinkers of the time. Representing an intersection of science, mathematics, and philosophy, the puzzle of Pallas occupied the thoughts of an amazing panorama of intellectual giants in Europe in the early 1800s

TitleGalileo and the Equations of Motion
Author(s)Boccaletti, Dino
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXIV, 175 p. 26 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is intended as a historical and critical study on the origin of the equations of motion as established in Newton's Principia. The central question that it aims to answer is whether it is indeed correct to ascribe to Galileo the inertia principle and the law of falling bodies. In order to accomplish this task, the study begins by considering theories on the motion of bodies from classical antiquity, and especially those of Aristotle. The theories developed during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are then reviewed, with careful analysis of the contributions of, for example, the Merton and Parisian Schools and Galileo???s immediate predecessors, Tartaglia and Benedetti. Finally, Galileo???s work is examined in detail, starting from the early writings.?? Excerpts from individual works are presented, to allow the texts to speak for themselves, and then commented upon. The book provides historical evidence both for Galileo's dependence on his forerunners and for the major breakthroughs that he achieved. It will satisfy the curiosity of all who wish to know when and why certain laws have been credited to Galileo

TitleThe Development of Elementary Quantum Theory
Author(s)Capellmann, Herbert
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionVII, 98 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book traces the evolution of the ideas that eventually resulted in the elementary quantum theory in 1925/26. Further, it discusses the essential differences between the fundamental equations of Quantum Theory derived by Born and Jordan, logically comprising Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Optics, and the traditional view of the development of Quantum Mechanics. Drawing on original publications and letters written by the main protagonists of that time, it shows that Einstein???s contributions from 1905 to 1924 laid the essential foundations for the development of Quantum Theory. Einstein introduced quantization of the radiation field; Born added quantized mechanical behavior. In addition, Born recognized that Quantum Mechanics necessarily required Quantum Optics; his radical concept of truly discontinuous and statistical quantum transitions (???quantum leaps???) was directly based on Einstein???s physical concepts
