Abstract NoteThis monograph addresses those interested in the study of planetary or solar magnetic fields, astronomers and geophysicists, researchers and students alike. The authors explore dynamo action under conditions appropriate to large astrophysical bodies, the magnetic Reynolds number of the flow being large compared to unity. In this limit dynamo action becomes closely linked with stretching properties of the flow. The concept of a fast dynamo is explained and studied using various methods from dynamical systems theory. Emphasis is placed on explicit, simple examples of fast dynamos. These examples suggest the beginnings of a theory of fast dynamo action, and link the physical process to the analysis of the stretching, folding, and twisting properties of the flow. A number of special formulations are considered, including dynamo action in almost integrable flows, dynamo action in the anti-integrable limit, and the analysis of random fast dynamos

Abstract NoteWe are often told that quantum phenomena demand radical revisions of our scientific world view and that no physical theory describing well defined objects, such as particles described by their positions, evolving in a well defined way, let alone deterministically, can account for such phenomena. The great majority of physicists continue to subscribe to this view, despite the fact that just such a deterministic theory, accounting for all of the phe?? nomena of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, was proposed by David Bohm more than four decades ago and has arguably been around almost since the inception of quantum mechanics itself. Our purpose in asking colleagues to write the essays for this volume has not been to produce a Festschrift in honor of David Bohm (worthy an undertaking as that would have been) or to gather together a collection of papers simply stating uncritically Bohm's views on quantum mechanics. The central theme around which the essays in this volume are arranged is David Bohm's version of quantum mechanics. It has by now become fairly standard practice to refer to his theory as Bohmian mechanics and to the larger conceptual framework within which this is located as the causal quantum theory program. While it is true that one can have reservations about the appropriateness of these specific labels, both do elicit distinc?? tive images characteristic of the key concepts of these approaches and such terminology does serve effectively to contrast this class of theories with more standard formulations of quantum theory

Abstract NoteThe Second Law of Thermodynamics has been called the most important law of nature: It is the law that gives a direction to processes that is not inherent in the laws of motion, that says the state of the universe is driven to thermal equilibrium. Its mathematical formulation is simple: The entropy of a closed system cannot decrease. Since the recognition that macroscopic phenomena have an atomic basis, it has remained a fundamental problem to reconcile the increase of entropy with the known reversibility of all the laws of microscopic physics. Professor Michael Mackey of McGill University here explores the dynamical basis for the Second Law, that is, he seeks to illuminate the fundamental dynamical properties required for the construction of a successful statistical mechanics. Aimed at physicists and applied mathematicians with an interest in the foundations of statistical mechanics, the book includes such new material as: a demonstration that the black body radiation law can be deduced from maximal entropy principles; a discussion of sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one state of thermodynamic equilibrium; a description of the behavior of entropy in asymptotically periodic systems; a necessary and sufficient condition for the evolution of entropy to a global maximum; and a presen- tation of the three main types of ergodic theorems and their proofs. He also explores the potential role of incomplete knowledge of dynamical variables, measurement imprecision, and the effects of noise in giving rise to entropy increases

Abstract NoteThis book is meant to be a practical introduction into the use of probability and statistics in experimental physics for advanced undergraduate students and for graduate students. I have attempted to write a short book. It is not intended as a comprehensive text in probability and statistics. I have tried to emphasize areas I have found to be useful when doing experimental physics. Except for the first two chapters the emphasis is on applications and understanding. I have omitted proofs of formal theorems in the interests of brevity unless I felt the proof added to one's intuition in understanding and applying the theorem. Since, however, this is a field in which there are often a number of misunderstandings, it is necessary to state some things with reasonable precision. I have tried to do this when necessary. I assume the student is familiar with partial derivatives and with ele?? mentary matrix manipulation. A computer is a needed tool for probability and statistics in experimental physics. We will introduce its use in this subject in some of the homework problems. One may interact with a computer in a batch mode or an inter?? active mode. In a batch mode, one submits FORTRAN or other language programs, the computer processes them, and returns the end results. In the interactive mode, one gives the computer an instruction, the computer processes it, indicates what it has done, and waits for the next instruction

Abstract NoteThis first volume of Statistical Physics is an introduction to the theories of equilibrium statistical mechanics, whereas the second volume (Springer Ser. Solid-State Sci., Vol. 31) is devoted to non equilibrium theories. Particular emphasis is placed on fundamental principles and basic con?? cepts and ideas. We start with physical examples of probability and kinetics, and then describe the general principles of statistical mechanics, with appli?? cations to quantum statistics, imperfect gases, electrolytes, and phase tran?? sitions, including critical phenomena. Finally, ergodic problems, the me?? chanical basis of statistical mechanics, are presented. The original text was written in Japanese as a volume of the Iwanami Series in Fundamental Physics, supervised by Professor H. Yukawa. The first edition was published in 1973 and the second in 1978. The English edition has been divided into two volumes at the request of the publisher, and the chapter on ergodic problems, which was at the end of the original book, is included here as Chapter 5. Chapters 1,2,3 and part of Chapter 4 were written by M. Toda, and Chapters 4 and 5 by N. Saito. More extensive references have been added for further reading, and some parts of the final chapters have been revised to bring the text up to date. It is a pleasure to express my gratitude to Professor P. Fulde for his detailed improvements in the manuscript, and to Dr. H. Lotsch of Springer?? Verlag for his continued cooperation
