TitleDisordered Alloys
Author(s)Schweika, Werner
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionX, 123 p. 59 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph reviews the subject of structural disorder in alloys and describes how structural information can be exploited to build sound theoretical descriptions in terms of modified Ising models. Scattering with thermal neutrons and x-rays prove to be complementary approaches to measure the weak diffuse scattering which provides detailed information about the disorder. The authors show how Monte Carlo methods are applied to determine the most realistic effective interactions among the alloying atoms. These results can be used as a benchmark for modern electronic structure calculations. Of more general interest, the limitations of scattering experiments in a determination of an interaction model, and thus also of the structure itself are discussed. Finally, simulations exhibit not only near-surface disordering due to frustration effects but also new possible surface - induced ordering phenomena. Accurate Monte Carlo simulations are used to test existing theories of wetting

TitleHydrometallurgical Process Fundamentals
Author(s)Bautista, Renato G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1984.
DescriptionX, 666 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe mineral resources of the industrialized countries, especially the member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza?? tion, are being depleted at such a rate that more and more of these count ries are beginning to depend on ore imported from other coun?? tries. To sustain the economic and strategie well-being of these member countries, it becomes imperative that a program of developing and exploiting other non-conventional mineral resources and a con?? servation program where metal values from waste dumps and scrap metals and alloys are recycled must be initiated and implemented. In order to meet this challenge, new processes and technology must be available for consideration in the design and operation of the new plants. One of the possible routes of extracting the metals from their ores, especially for multimetal complex ores and very low grade ores, is by hydrometallurgical processing. The hydrometallurgical route of metal recovery where dissolution (leaching), separation and concentration (ion exchange, solvent extraction, and membrane separation) and reduction to metal (cementation, precipitation by gaseous reduction, and electrolysis) is carried out at near ambient temperature is becoming more competi?? tive with the conventional high temperature processes used in the smelting of metals from high grade and beneficiated ores

TitleStructural Thermodynamics of Alloys
Author(s)Manenc, J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1973.
Description225 p : online resource
Abstract NoteTechnical progress has for a very long time been directly dependent on progress in metallurgy, which is itself connected with improvements in the technology of alloys. Metals are most frequently used in the form of alloys for several reasons: the quantity of pure metal in its native state in the earth's crust is very limited; pure metals must be extracted from ores which are themselves impure. Finally, the methods of treatment used lead more easily to alloys than to pure metals. The most typical case is that of iron, where a pure ore may be found, but which is the starting point for cast iron or steel, alloys of iron and carbon. In addition, the properties of alloys are in general superior to those of pure metals and modem metallurgy consists of controlling these properties so as to make them conform to the requirements of the design office. Whilst the engineer was formerly compelled to adapt his designs and constructions to the materials available, such as wood, stone, bronze, iron, cast iron and ordinary steels, he can now expect, due to metallurgical research, the creation of special alloys meeting specific requirements. These requirements must of course be reasonable, but VIII INTRODUCTION must be sufficiently imperative for them to become the motive for progress
