TitleDifferential equations and linear algebra
Author(s)Gilbert Strang
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2014.
Descriptionx, 502p.
Abstract NoteDifferential equations and linear algebra are two central topics in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. This innovative textbook allows the two subjects to be developed either separately or together, illuminating the connections between two fundamental topics, and giving increased flexibility to instructors. It can be used either as a semester-long course in differential equations, or as a one-year course in differential equations, linear algebra, and applications. Beginning with the basics of differential equations, it covers first and second order equations, graphical and numerical methods, and matrix equations. The book goes on to present the fundamentals of vector spaces, followed by eigenvalues and eigenvectors, positive definiteness, integral transform methods and applications to PDEs. The exposition illuminates the natural correspondence between solution methods for systems of equations in discrete and continuous settings. The topics draw on the physical sciences, engineering and economics, reflecting the author's distinguished career as an applied mathematician and expositor.

TitleEssential radio astronomy
Author(s)James J. Condon ;Scott M. Ransom
PublicationPrinceton, Princeton University Press, 2016.
Descriptionx, 363p.
Series(Princeton Series in Modern Observational Astronomy)
Abstract NoteEssential Radio Astronomy is the only textbook on the subject specifically designed for a one-semester introductory course for advanced undergraduates or graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics. It starts from first principles in order to fill gaps in students' backgrounds, make teaching easier for professors who are not expert radio astronomers, and provide a useful reference to the essential equations used by practitioners. This unique textbook reflects the fact that students of multiwavelength astronomy typically can afford to spend only one semester studying the observational techniques particular to each wavelength band. Essential Radio Astronomy presents only the most crucial concepts--succinctly and accessibly. It covers the general principles behind radio telescopes, receivers, and digital backends without getting bogged down in engineering details. Emphasizing the physical processes in radio sources, the book's approach is shaped by the view that radio astrophysics owes more to thermodynamics than electromagnetism. Proven in the classroom and generously illustrated throughout, Essential Radio Astronomy is an invaluable resource for students and researchers alike.

TitleIntroduction to orthogonal transforms: With Applications in Data Processing and Analysis
Author(s)Ruye Wang
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2012.
Descriptionxxii, 568p.
Abstract NoteA systematic, unified treatment of orthogonal transform methods for signal processing, data analysis and communications, this book guides the reader from mathematical theory to problem solving in practice. It examines each transform method in depth, emphasizing the common mathematical principles and essential properties of each method in terms of signal decorrelation and energy compaction. The different forms of Fourier transform, as well as the Laplace, Z-, Walsh–Hadamard, Slant, Haar, Karhunen–Loève and wavelet transforms, are all covered, with discussion of how each transform method can be applied to real-world experimental problems. Numerous practical examples and end-of-chapter problems, supported by online Matlab and C code and an instructor-only solutions manual, make this an ideal resource for students and practitioners alike.

TitleStudent's guide to fourier transforms: With applications in physics and engineering
Author(s)J. F. James
Edition3rd.
PublicationNew Delhi, Cambridge University Press, 2011.
Descriptionxiii, 146p.
Abstract NoteFourier transform theory is of central importance in a vast range of applications in physical science, engineering and applied mathematics. Providing a concise introduction to the theory and practice of Fourier transforms, this book is invaluable to students of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, and computer science. After a brief description of the basic ideas and theorems, the power of the technique is illustrated through applications in optics, spectroscopy, electronics and telecommunications. The rarely discussed but important field of multi-dimensional Fourier theory is covered, including a description of Computer Axial Tomography (CAT scanning). The book concludes by discussing digital methods, with particular attention to the Fast Fourier Transform and its implementation. This new edition has been revised to include new and interesting material, such as convolution with a sinusoid, coherence, the Michelson stellar interferometer and the van Cittert–Zernike theorem, Babinet's principle and dipole arrays.
