TitleLaminar-Turbulent Transition : IUTAM Symposium, Sedona/AZ September 13 ??? 17, 1999
Author(s)Fasel, H.F;Saric, W.S
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionXXXIV, 686 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe origins of turbulent flow and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow are among the most important unsolved problems of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Besides being a fundamental question of fluid mechanics, there are any number of applications for information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent flow. The JUT AM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, co-hosted by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, was held in Sedona, Arizona. Although four previous JUT AM Symposia bear the same appellation (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984, Toulouse 1989, and Sendai 1994) the topics that were emphasized at each were different and reflect the evolving nature of our understanding of the transition process. The major contributions of Stuttgart 1979 centered on nonlinear behavior and later stages of transition in two-dimensional boundary layers. Stability of closed systems was also included with Taylor vortices in different geometries. The topics of Novosibirsk 1984 shifted to resonant wave interactions and secondary instabilities in boundary layers. Pipe- and channel-flow transition were discussed as model problems for the boundary layer. Investigations of free shear layers were presented and a heavy dose of supersonic papers appeared for the first time. The character of Toulouse 1989 was also different in that 3-D boundary layers, numerical simulations, streamwise vortices, and foundation papers on receptivity were presented. Sendai 1994 saw a number of papers on swept wings and 3-D boundary layers. Numerical simulations attacked a broader range of problems

TitleQuasicrystals : An Introduction to Structure, Physical Properties and Applications
Author(s)Suck, J.-B;Schreiber, M;H??ussler, P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXVIII, 564 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a basic introduction to the structure and physical properties of quasicrystals, giving equal weight to experimental and theoretical progress. After introducing different aspects of tilings, including random tiling, the foundations of the crystallography of these aperiodic crystals is laid. The experimental investigation of the structure in real and reciprocal space is covered in detail, including high resolution electron microscopy, STM and AFM and electron-, X-ray- and especially neutron diffraction. The results of these experimental techniques are supplemented by the modelling of the atomic structure based on realistic ab initio pair interactions. A central role in aperiodic crystals is played by the electrons, which are most sensitive to the aperiodic atomic structure and are therefore discussed in detail:the surprising results of conduction measurements and the experimental investigation of the partial density of states for quasicrystals and their rational approximants are contrasted with the results from calculations of the electronic structure of quasicrystals. The vibrational properties of quasicrystalline alloys are extensively discussed on the basis of different computer simulations techniques and of the rich variety of experimental results obtained with mono- and polygrain quasicrystals and their approximants by neutron inelastic scattering. Likewise the magnetic properties of quasicrystalline alloys, which depend on the type of sample and show interesting transitions to different magnetic phases, are covered. The mechanical properties and the results from the investigation of defects in quasicrystals by experimental methods like electron microscopy and ion channeling and by extensive computer simulations of defects and fracture, which play a major role in the applications of quasicrystals, are presented. For the understanding of quasicrystal formation the properties of the undercooled liquid alloys, the details of the mostly extremely complicated phase diagrams, the reasons for the success of certain production techniques, the process of alloy growth, and the reasons for the stability of the non periodic crystal structure in competition with the periodic one must

TitleThin Films on Glass
Author(s)Bach, Hans;Krause, Dieter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionXX, 436 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThin Films on Glass. This book is one of a series reporting on international research and development activities conducted by the Schott Group companies. With the series Schott aims to provide an overview of its activites for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide where glass and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subject treated. This volume describes the development of active and passive thin films on glass at Schott. Design strategies, the use of conventional and newly developed production technologies of thin films on glass, and the application of characterization methods for the structure of thin films and their properties are reported. Several examples illustrate how the the best suited film materials and deposition and processing parameters. may be selected. Particular chapters treat the topics of flip-flop layers (coatings consisting of very thin high- and low-index layers), wave-guiding films, Rugate filters and gradient devices, optical transducers, laser coatings, cold light mirrors, sol-gel solutions for thin film production with dip coating processes, the coating of window panes with solar reflection coatings, and rear-view mirrors for cars. The book is conceived as a monograph. The individual chapters, however, are written by leading Schott experts on the corresponding subjects. In all the chapters, tables and examples are chosen to introduce the reader to thin film science and technology. Numerous references are given to more detailed literature

TitleDiffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials
Author(s)Mittemeijer, Eric J;Scardi, Paolo
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXXV, 554 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDiffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials provides an overview of diffraction methods applied to the analysis of the microstructure of materials. Since crystallite size and the presence of lattice defects have a decisive influence on the properties of many engineering materials, information about this microstructure is of vital importance in developing and assessing materials for practical applications. The most powerful and usually non-destructive evaluation techniques available are X-ray and neutron diffraction. The book details, among other things, diffraction-line broadening methods for determining crystallite size and atomic-scale strain due, e.g. to dislocations, and methods for the analysis of residual (macroscale) stress. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and supplies readers sufficient information to apply the methods themselves

Author(s)Cardona, Manuel;G??ntherodt, Gernot
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionIX, 303 p. 18 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the seventh volume of a well-established series in which expert practitioners discuss topical aspects of light scattering in solids. Emphasis is placed on electronic excitations between crystal-field split levels of transition-metal and rare-earth ions in crystals, among them high-Tc superconductors and magnetic excitations that appear in superlattices containing magnetic metals. The contents of this volume again demonstrates the usefulness of Raman spectroscopy for the investigation and characterization of this class of materials. It will be useful to advanced students and to all researchers who apply Raman spectroscopy in their work

TitleEngineering Electromagnetics
Author(s)Ida, Nathan
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2000.
DescriptionDCXCI, 568 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe applications involving electromagnetic fields are so pervasive that it is difficult to estimate their contribution to the industrial output: generation of electricity, power transmission lines, electric motors, actuators, relays, radio, TV and microwave transmission and reception, magnetic storage, and even the mundane little magnet used to hold a paper note on the refrigerator are all electromagnetic in nature. One would be hard pressed to find a device that works without relaying on any electromagnetic principle or effect. This text provides a good theoretical understanding of the electromagnetic field equations but also treats a large number of applications. In fact, no topic is presented unless it is directly applicable to engineering design or unless it is needed for the understanding of another topic. In electrostatics, for example, the text includes discussions of photocopying, ink-jet printing, electrostatic separation and deposition, sandpaper production, paint spraying, and powder coating. In magnetics, the applications discussed include electric motors, implantable magnets, nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetic stirring of molten materials, and electromagnetic braking and bearings. Electric motors and transformers are used to demonstrate the ideas of magnetic forces and torques and of induction; the applications discussed include the new super-efficient electric drives, linear induction motors, and implantable transformers to power life-sustaining devices. The discussion of wave-propagation phenomena will include applications of new materials to aerospace systems, such as the so-called stealth materials, as well as the use of electromagnetic weaves for materials processing, such as grain drying with microwaves, microwave detection of explosives, and remote sensing of the earth and its resources
