TitleNumerical Treatment of Coupled Systems : Proceedings of the Eleventh GAMM-Seminar, Kiel, January 20???22, 1995
Author(s)Hackbusch, Wolfgang;Wittum, Gabriel
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Vieweg+Teubner Verlag 2. Vieweg+Teubner Verlag, 1995.
DescriptionVI, 216 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe GAMM Committee for "Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations" organizes seminars and workshops on subjects concerning the algorithmic treatment of partial differential equations. The topics are discretisation methods like the finite element and the boundary element method for various type of applications in structural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to the advanced solution methods. The series of such seminars was continued in 1995, January 20-22, with the 11th Kiel-Seminar on the special topic Numerical Treatment of Coupled Systems at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. The seminar was attended by 100 scientist from 9 countries. 23 lectures were given, including two survey lectures. Different kinds of couplings are considered in this volume. The coupling of different components may occur in the physical model. On the other hand, a coupling of subsystems can be generated by the numerical solution technique. General examples of the latter kind are the domain decomposition (see p. 128) or subspace decomposition (p. 117). The local defect correction method couples different discretizations of the same problem in order to improve the results, although the basic linear system to be solved remains unchanged (p. 47). In general, the aim of the numerical coupling is to make use of (efficient) subsystem solvers (p. 1). The combination of different discretization techniques is mentioned on page 59

Author(s)Kravtsov, Yu.A;Orlov, Yu.I
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
Descriptiononline resource
Abstract NoteCaustics, Catastrophes and Wave Fields in a sense continues the treatment of the earlier volume 6 "Geometrical Optics of Inhomogeneous Media" by analysing caustics and their fields on the basis of modern catastrophe theory. The present volume covers local and uniform caustic asymptotic expansions: The Lewis-Kravtsov method of standard functions, Maslov's method of canonical operators , Orlov's method of interference integrals, as well as their modifications for penumbra, space-time, random and other types of caustics. All the methods are amply illustrated by worked problems concerning relevant wave-field applications

TitleRecent Advances in Electromagnetic Theory
Author(s)Kritikos, H.N;Jaggard, Dwight L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1990.
DescriptionXIV, 392 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe contributions of this book represent only a small sample of the work of the many researcher electromagneticians who have had the pleasure of being associated with Professor Papas, either as students or as colleagues. Many of us continue to work in the many and diverse areas that modem electro?? magnetism encompasses. There is, however, a common thread that was derived from our association with Professor Papas that has greatly influenced our thinking and technical style of expression. Professor Papas, from his studies at Harvard, brought with him to Pasadena a very fundamental and classical point of view that was instilled in all those who were associated with him. He saw research problems as a combination offundamental physical and mathematical principles and the electromagnetic "reality. " He searched and demanded clarity and often, in the rather involved and engaging discussions which took place in his office, he demanded that the "baby picture" be clearly drawn on the blackboard. This requirement, certainly for some of us who were working in widely varied subjects ranging from relativistic plasmas to almost periodic media, has forced us to reexamine the fundamentals. The clear and lucid marriage of fundamental concepts to applications has been the trademark of Professor Papas's intellectual tradition, and has greatly in?? fluenced the thinking of all of those who have associated with him

TitleMatter and Methods at Low Temperatures
Author(s)Pobell, Frank
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996.
DescriptionXIII, 372 p. 22 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIt has been a great pleasure for me to see this book - very often several copies - in almost every low-temperature laboratory I have visited during the past three years. Low- and ultralow-temperature physics continue to be lively and pro?? gressing fields of research. New results have emerged over the four years since publication of the first edition of my monograph. The second edition contains relevant results particularly on thermometry and materials proper?? ties, as well as many additional references. Of course, typographical errors I had overlooked are now corrected. I am grateful to J. Friebel for checking and solving the problems I have included in this new edition. And, as for the case of the first edition, I again thank H. Lotsch for the very careful edit?? ing. I hope that this lower-priced paperback edition will continue to be a valuable source for the research and study of many of my colleagues and their students

TitleIntegrated Optics: Theory and Technology
Author(s)Hunsperger, Robert G
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXIX, 349 p. 60 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteProfessor Hunsperger's Integrated Optics is one of the few texts that is comprehensive and thorough enough for use both as a classroom text (practice problems are included) and as a specialist's reference. The gratifying success of the first two editions and the continuing rapid development of the field necessitated the writing of this third edition. All chapters have been revised and updated, and a new chapter, on quantum well devices, has been added. As in the previous editions, detailed descriptions of the phenomena, devices, and technology used in optical integrated circuits and their relationship to fiber optics are presented. The trend of telecommunications toward the use of single mode systems operating at the longer wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 ??m is explained and documented with illustrations of recently developed devices and systems. Broader coverage of GaInAsP devices and optical integrated circuits is provided, and the new growth tech- niques of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are described. A discussion of the extensive development of hybrid optical integrated circuits in lithium niobate is also included. From the reviews: I never had the opportunity of using Hunsperger as a text to teach from but after reading the present third edition, I think it must be a pleasure to do so. It is a good book because of its precise language and its didactic organization (with many clear tables), it is exhaustive in its details, and rigorous in its background; it is well suited for a graduate-level course

TitleAdsorption on Ordered Surfaces of Ionic Solids and Thin Films : Proceedings of the 106th WE-Heraeus Seminar, Bad Honnef, Germany, February 15???18, 1993
Author(s)Freund, Hans-Joachim;Umbach, Eberhard
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionX, 291 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAdsorption on Ordered Surfaces of Ionic Solids and Thin Films introduces to a new and topical field of surface science for which rather little experience is available at present. It reviews the recent results of the employed analytical methods comprising all modern surface techniques including scanning tunneling microscopy and various kinds of electron spectroscopies. The present status of this new, clearly defined field of surface science is nearly completely overviewed by contributions from most of the research groups active in this field. The book is meant as a basis for the expected rapid development in this area with applications in catalysis, thin-film and semiconductor technology, sensors, electrochemistry, controlled preparation of ultrathin epitaxial surfaces, and interfaces of insultors as well as future molecular electronics
