Title | A photographic atlas of selected regions of the Milky Way |
Author(s) | by Edward Emerson Barnard ; edited by Edwin B. Frost and Mary R. Calvert ; republished under the direction of Gerald Orin Dobek |
Description | 1 online resource (xiv, 358 pages) : digital, PDF file(s) |
Abstract Note | Edward Emerson Barnard's Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way was originally published in two volumes in 1927. Together, these volumes contained a wealth of information, including photographic plates of the most interesting portions of the Milky Way, descriptive text, charts and data. Only 700 copies were printed, making the original edition a collector's item. Reproduced in print for the first time, this edition combines both volumes of Barnard's Atlas. It directly replicates Barnard's text, and contains high-resolution images of the original photographic plates and charts, reordered so that they can be seen together. It also includes a biography of Barnard and his work, a Foreword and Addendum by Gerald Orin Dobek describing the importance of the Atlas and additions to this volume, and a pull-out section with a mosaic of all 50 plates combined in a single panorama |
Contents Note | Machine generated contents note: Foreword by Gerald Orin Dobek; Preface from the original Atlas; Introduction from the original Atlas; Bibliography from the original Atlas; Catalogue of 349 dark objects in the sky; Biography of Edward Emerson Barnard |

Title | Revealing the heart of the galaxy: The Milkey Way and Its Black Hole |
Author(s) | Robert H. Sanders |
Publication | Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2014. |
Description | ix, 197p. |
Abstract Note | Written in an informal and engaging style, this volume traces the discoveries that led to our understanding of the size and structure of the Milky Way, and the conclusive evidence for a massive black hole at its center. Robert H. Sanders, an astronomer who witnessed many of these developments, describes how we parted the veil of interstellar dust to probe the strange phenomena within. We now know that the most luminous objects in the Universe - quasars and radio galaxies - are powered by massive black holes at their hearts. But how did black holes emerge from being a mathematical peculiarity, a theoretical consequence of Einstein's theory of gravity, to become part of the modern paradigm that explains active galactic nuclei and galaxy evolution in normal galaxies such as the Milky Way? This story, aimed at non-specialist readers and students and historians of astronomy, will both inform and entertain. |

Title | Visual astronomy under dark skies: A New Approach to Observing Deep Space |
Author(s) | Antony Cooke |
Publication | London, 1. Springer
2. Springer-Verlag, 2005. |
Description | x, 180p. |
Series | (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series) |
Abstract Note | Modern astronomical telescopes, along with other advances in technology, have brought the deep sky â star clusters, nebulae and the galaxies â within visual reach of amateur astronomers.
It isnât necessary to image deep-sky objects in order to see them; you look at them in real-time by using modern observing techniques and enhancement technology.
The first requirement is a truly dark observing site. Given a location with clear, dark night skies everything else follows⦠this book contains all you need to know about what to observe, how to get superb views of faint and distant astronomical objects, and how to use the best of todayâs commercial equipment for visual observing. |
