Abstract NoteThe effects of electromagnetic radiation and high-energy par?? ticles on semiconductors can be divided into two main processes: (a) the excitation of electrons (the special case is internal ioniza?? tion, i. e. , the generation of excess charge carriers); and(b) dis?? turbance of the periodic structure of the crystal, i. e. , the forma?? tion of "structural radiation defects. " Naturally, investigations of the effects of radiation on semiconductors cannot be considered in isolation. Thus, for example, the problern of "radiation de?? fects" is part of the generalproblern of crystal lattice defects and the influence of such defects on the processes occurring in semi?? conductors. The same is true of photoelectric and similar phe?? nomena where the action of the radiation is only the start of a complex chain of nonequilibrium electronprocesses. Nevertheless, particularly from the point of view of the experimental physicist, the radiation effects discussed in the present book have inter?? esting features: several types of radiation may produce the same resul t (for example, ionization by photons and by charged particles) or one type of radiation may produce several effects (ionization and radiation -defect formation). The aim of the author was to consider the most typical prob?? lems. The subjects discussed differ widely from one another in the extent to which they have been investigated

Abstract NoteThis volume originated in a happy event honoring Arthur Schawlow on his 65th birthday. As a research physicist, Schawlow has been a major infiuence on the present nature of physics and of high technology. He has also had a role, through the American Physical Society and other organizations, in shaping policy for the world of physicists. Important as these professional activities have been, the contributions to this volume were not prepared just for these reasons, but more for Art Schawlow the friend, colleague, and teacher. I am one who has had the privilege of knowing and collaborating with Art, probably over a longer period of time than others participating in this volume, and in a number of different enterprises; his friendship and stimulating scientific abilities are a very significant part of my own life. It is hence a pleasure to take part in this volume celebrating his contributions to science and to scientists. Schawlow's career has been geographically centered at the University of Toronto, Columbia University, the Bell Telephone Laboratories, and Stan?? ford University. Abstract NoteEnergy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy (EFTEM) presents a summary of the electron optics, the electron-specimen interactions, and the operation and contrast modes of this new field of analytical electron microscopy. The electron optics of filter lenses and the progress in the correction of aberrations are discussed in detail. An evaluation of our present knowledge of plasmon losses and inner-shell ionisations is of increasing interest for a quantitative application of EFTEM in materials and life sciences. This can be realized not only by filtering the elastically scattered electrons but mainly by imaging and analyzing with inelastically scattered electrons at different energy losses up to 2000 eV. The strength of EFTEM is the combination of the modes of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), Electron Spectroscopic Imaging (ESI) and Diffraction (ESD) and of energy filtering Reflection Electron Microscopy (REM) in one instrument

Abstract NoteThis volume in the Springer Series on Surface Sciences presents a recent account of advances in the ever-broadening field of electron-and photon-stimulated sur?? face processes. As in previous volumes, these advances are presented as the proceedings of the International Workshop on Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions; the fifth workshop (DIET V) was held in Taos, New Mexico, April 1-4, 1992. It will be abundantly clear to the reader that "DIET" is not restricted to desorption, but has for several years included photochemistry, non-thermal surface modification, exciton self-trapping, and many other phenomena that are induced by electron or photon bombardment. However, most stimulated surface processes do share a common physics: initial electronic excitation, localization of the excitation, and conversion of electronic energy into nuclear kinetic energy. It is the rich variation of this theme which makes the field so interesting and fruitful. We have divided the book into eleven parts in order to emphasize the wide range of materials that are examined and to highlight recent experimental and theoretical advances. Naturally, there is considerable overlap between sections, and many papers would be appropriate in more than one part. Part I focuses on perhaps the most active area in the field today: electron attachment. Here the detection and characterization of negative ions formed by attachment of elec?? trons supplied externally from the vacuum are discussed. In addition, the first observations of negative ions formed by substrate photoelectrons are presented

Abstract NoteThis book presents an account of the course "Advances in Nonradiative Processes in Solids" held in Erice, Italy, from June 15 to 29, 1989. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. An area of solid state research that continues to attract the attention of experimental and theoretical physicists is that of nonradiative relaxation processes of excited solids. The interest in these processes stems from their technological relevance, and from the difficulty in the quantitative characterization and differentiation of their various pathways. The decay channels leading to the ground state include the conversion of electronic excitation energy into phonon energy, nonradiative transfer of excitation energy, upconversion processes, etc. Considerable advances have been achieved in understanding and modeling the radiative process that follow the electronic excitations of solids; the progress in this field has been instrumental in the development of new solid-state devices and laser materials. On the other hand, these advances have underscored the inadequacy in the understanding of the nonradiative relaxation processes. This course dealt with the advances in physical modeling, mathematical formalisms and experimental techniques relevant to the quantitative characterization of the various pathways of nonradiative relaxation of solids in excited electronic states

Abstract NoteInstabilities associated with hot electrons in semiconductors have been investigated from the beginning of transistor physics in the 194Os. The study of NDR and impact ionization in bulk material led to devices like the Gunn diode and the avalanche-photo-diode. In layered semiconductors domain formation in HEMTs can lead to excess gate leakage and to excess noise. The studies of hot electron transport parallel to the layers in heterostructures, single and multiple, have shown abundant evidence of electrical instability and there has been no shortage of suggestions concerning novel NDR mechanisms, such as real space transfer, scattering induced NDR, inter-sub band transfer, percolation effects etc. Real space transfer has been exploited in negative-resistance PETs (NERFETs) and in the charge-injection transistor (CHINT) and in light emitting logic devices, but far too little is known and understood about other NDR mechanisms with which quantum well material appears to be particularly well-endowed, for these to be similarly exploited. The aim of this book is therefore to collate what is known and what is not known about NDR instabilities, and to identify promising approaches and techniques which will increase our understanding of the origin of these instabilities which have been observed during the last decade of investigations into high-field longitudinal transport in layered semiconductors. The book covers the fundamental properties of hot carrier transport and the associated instabilities and light emission in 2-dimensional semiconductors dealing with both theory and experiment
