Description | XXVII, 348 p. 224 illus., 204 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book collects the edited and reviewed contribution presented in the 10th iTi conference in Bertinoro, covering fundamental and applied aspects in turbulence. In the spirit of the iTi conference, the book is produced after the conference so that the authors had the opportunity to incorporate comments and discussions raised during the meeting. The iTi has become an established biannual conference on turbulence research with 80 to 100 participants and places value on creating an environment to stimulate discussions and personal contacts in the beautiful town of Bertinoro in Northern Italy close to Bologna, continuing a tradition that has started in Bad Zwischenahn/Germany with the first edition of the conference in 2003. The content-related focus areas of the conference are the interdisciplinary aspects of turbulence, defining the abbreviation iTi???interdisciplinary turbulence initiative. iTi attracts scientist from the engineering, physics, and mathematics communities |

Title | Pseudo-Hermitian Random Matrices |
Author(s) | Pato, Mauricio Porto |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XVII, 178 p. 58 illus., 49 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is a comprehensive guide to pseudo-Hermitian random matrices, their properties, and their role in many models that are relevant to physical processes. The book starts by showing how the concept of pseudo-Hermiticity emerged from studies of PT-symmetric systems which aroused the interest of the random matrix theory community. The chapters that follow discuss the consequences of the pseudo-Hermitian condition to the eigen-decomposition of non-Hermitian matrices, and an investigation of pseudo-Hermitian random matrices in tridiagonal form, discussing the scenario with real eigenvalues, and the appearance of complex eigenvalues generated by unbound and non-positive metrics. Subsequently, the author introduces pseudo-Hermitian Gaussian matrices and their properties including characteristic polynomials, and statistical properties of their eigenvalues. Finally, in the last chapter, the time invariance of the metric is upended and a pseudo-Hermitian model with a time dependent metricis constructed to discuss the time evolution of entangled states |

Title | Complex and Adaptive Dynamical Systems : A Comprehensive Introduction |
Author(s) | Gros, Claudius |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2024. |
Description | XV, 461 p. 167 illus., 145 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook offers a comprehensive introduction to the concepts underpinning our modern understanding of complex and emergent behavior. Mathematical methods necessary for the discussion are introduced and explained on the run. All derivations are presented step-by-step. This new fifth edition has been fully revised and includes a new chapter, a range of new sections, figures and exercises. The Solution chapter has been reorganized for clarity. The core aspects of modern complex system sciences are presented in the first chapters, covering the foundations of network- and dynamical system theory, with a particular focus on scale-free networks and tipping phenomena. The notion of deterministic chaos is treated together with bifurcation theory and the intricacies of time delays. Modern information theoretical principles are discussed in further chapters, together with the notion of self-organized criticality, synchronization phenomena, and a game-theoretical treatment of the tragedy of the commons. The dynamical systems view of modern machine learning is presented in a new chapter. Chapters include exercises and suggestions for further reading. The textbook is suitable for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The prerequisites are the basic mathematical tools of courses in natural sciences, computer science or engineering |

Title | Fractional Dispersive Models and Applications : Recent Developments and Future Perspectives |
Author(s) | Kevrekidis, Panayotis G;Cuevas-Maraver, Jes??s |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XV, 328 p. 94 illus., 78 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book explores the role of fractional calculus and associated partial differential equations in modeling multiscale phenomena and overlapping macroscopic & microscopic scales, offering an innovative and powerful tool for modeling complex systems. While integer order PDEs have a long-standing history, the novel setting of fractional PDEs opens up new possibilities for the simulation of multi-physics phenomena. The book examines a range of relevant examples that showcase the seamless transition from wave propagation to diffusion or from local to non-local dynamics in both continuum and discrete systems. These systems have been argued as being particularly relevant in contexts such as nonlinear optics, lattice nonlinear dynamical systems, and dispersive nonlinear wave phenomena, where the exploration of the potential fractionality has emerged as a highly active topic for current studies. The volume consists of contributions from a diverse group of active scholars and experts across different fields, providing a detailed examination of the field's past, present, and future state-of-the-art in the interplay of fractional PDEs and nonlinear wave phenomena. It is intended to be of wide interest to both seasoned researchers and beginners in the Field of Nonlinear Science. This book sets the stage for the next decade of research and beyond and is a timely and relevant reference of choice for this crucial junction of current research |
