Abstract NoteIf we try to describe real world in mathematical terms, we will see that real life is very often a high???dimensional chaos. Sometimes, by ???pushing hard???, we manage to make order out of it; yet sometimes, we need simply to accept our life as it is. To be able to still live successfully, we need tounderstand, predict, and ultimately control this high???dimensional chaotic dynamics of life. This is the main theme of the present book. In our previous book, Geometrical - namics of Complex Systems, Vol. 31 in Springer book series Microprocessor??? Based and Intelligent Systems Engineering, we developed the most powerful mathematical machinery to deal with high???dimensional nonlinear dynamics. In the present text, we consider the extreme cases of nonlinear dynamics, the high???dimensional chaotic and other attractor systems. Although they might look as examples of complete disorder ??? they still represent control systems, with their inputs, outputs, states, feedbacks, and stability. Today, we can see a number of nice books devoted to nonlinear dyn- ics and chaos theory (see our reference list). However, all these books are only undergraduate, introductory texts, that are concerned exclusively with oversimpli?ed low???dimensional chaos, thus providing only an inspiration for the readers to actually throw themselves into the real???life chaotic dynamics

Abstract NoteModern research in neural networks has led to powerful artificial learning systems, while recent work in the psychology of human memory has revealed much about how natural systems really learn, including the role of unconscious, implicit, memory processes. Regrettably, the two approaches typically ignore each other. This book, combining the approaches, should contribute to their mutual benefit. New empirical work is presented showing dissociations between implicit and explicit memory performance. Recently proposed explanations for such data lead to a new connectionist learning procedure: CALM (Categorizing and Learning Module), which can learn with or without supervision, and shows practical advantages over many existing procedures. Specific experiments are simulated by a network model (ELAN) composed of CALM modules. A working memory extension to the model is also discussed that could give it symbol manipulation abilities. The book will be of interest to memory psychologists and connectionists, as well as to cognitive scientists who in the past have tended to restrict themselves to symbolic models

Abstract NoteThe favourable reception of the first edition and the encouragement received from many readers have prompted the author to bring out this new edition. This provides the opportunity for correcting a number of errors, typographical and others, contained in the first edition and making further improvements. This second edition has a new chapter on simplifying Dynamical Systems covering Poincare map, Floquet theory, Centre Manifold Theorems, normal forms of dynamical systems, elimination of passive coordinates and Liapunov-Schmidt reduction theory. It would provide a gradual transition to the study of Bifurcation, Chaos and Catastrophe in Chapter 10. Apart from this, most others - in fact all except the first three and last chapters - have been revised and enlarged to bring in some new materials, elaborate some others, especially those sections which many readers felt were rather too concise in the first edition, by providing more explana?? tion, examples and applications. Chapter 11 provides some good examples of this. Another example may be found in Chapter 4 where the review of Linear Algebra has been enlarged to incorporate further materials needed in this edition, for example the last section on idempotent matrices and projection would prove very useful to follow Liapunov-Schmidt reduction theory presented in Chapter 9
