TitlePatterns of Synchrony in Complex Networks of Adaptively Coupled Oscillators
Author(s)Berner, Rico
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVI, 203 p. 51 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe focus of this thesis is the interplay of synchrony and adaptivity in complex networks. Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon observed in different contexts in physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, medicine, socioeconomic systems, and engineering. Most prominently, synchronization takes place in the brain, where it is associated with cognitive capacities like learning and memory, but is also a characteristic of neurological diseases like Parkinson and epilepsy. Adaptivity is common in many networks in nature and technology, where the connectivity changes in time, i.e., the strength of the coupling is continuously adjusted depending upon the dynamic state of the system, for instance synaptic neuronal plasticity in the brain. This research contributes to a fundamental understanding of various synchronization patterns, including hierarchical multifrequency clusters, chimeras and other partial synchronization states. After a concise survey of the fundamentals of adaptive and complex dynamical networks and synaptic plasticity, in the first part of the thesis the existence and stability of cluster synchronization in globally coupled adaptive networks is discussed for simple paradigmatic phase oscillators as well as for a more realistic neuronal oscillator model with spike-timing dependent plasticity. In the second part of the thesis the interplay of adaptivity and connectivity is investigated for more complex network structures like nonlocally coupled rings, random networks, and multilayer systems. Besides presenting a plethora of novel, sometimes intriguing patterns of synchrony, the thesis makes a number of pioneering methodological advances, where rigorous mathematical proofs are given in the Appendices. These results are of interest not only from a fundamental point of view, but also with respect to challenging applications in neuroscience and technological systems

TitleStatistical Physics of Complex Systems : A Concise Introduction
Author(s)Bertin, Eric
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVII, 291 p. 33 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis third edition of Statistical Physics of Complex Systems has been expanded to provide more examples of applications of concepts and methods from statistical physics to the modeling of complex systems. These include avalanche dynamics in materials, models of social agents like road traffic or wealth repartition, the real space aspects of biological evolution dynamics, propagation phenomena on complex networks, formal neural networks and their connection to constraint satisfaction problems. This course-tested textbook provides graduate students and non-specialists with a basic understanding of the concepts and methods of statistical physics and demonstrates their wide range of applications to interdisciplinary topics in the field of complex system sciences, including selected aspects of theoretical modeling in biology and the social sciences. It covers topics such as non-conserved particles, evolutionary population dynamics, networks, properties of both individual and coupled simple dynamical systems, and convergence theorems, as well as short appendices that offer helpful hints on how to perform simple stochastic simulations in practice. The original spirit of the book is to remain accessible to a broad, non-specialized readership. The format is a set of concise, modular, and self-contained topical chapters, avoiding technicalities and jargon as much as possible, and complemented by a wealth of worked-out examples, so as to make this work useful as a self-study text or as textbook for short courses

Abstract NoteThis book aims to gather the insight of leading experts on corruption and anti-corruption studies working at the scientific frontier of this phenomenon using the multidisciplinary tools of data and network science, in order to present current theoretical, empirical, and operational efforts being performed in order to curb this problem. The research results strengthen the importance of evidence-based approaches in the fight against corruption in all its forms, and foster the discussion about the best ways to convert the obtained knowledge into public policy. The contributed chapters provide comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches to handle the non-trivial structural and dynamical aspects that characterize the modern social, economic, political and technological systems where corruption takes place. This book will serve a broad multi-disciplinary audience from natural to social scientists, applied mathematicians, including law and policymakers

TitleYour Life in Numbers: Modeling Society Through Data
Author(s)Jensen, Pablo
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Copernicus 2. Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionVII, 114 p. 16 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMore than 300 years ago, Isaac Newton created a mathematical model of the solar system that predicted the existence of a yet unknown planet: Neptune. Today, driven by the digital revolution, modern scientists are creating complex models of society itself to shed light on topics as far-ranging as epidemic outbreaks and economic growth. But how do these scientists gather and interpret their data? How accurate are their models? Can we trust the numbers? With a rare background in physics, economics and sociology, the author is able to present an insider???s view of the strengths, weaknesses and dangers of transforming our lives into numbers. After reading this book, you???ll understand how different numerical models work and how they are used in practice. The author begins by exploring several simple, easy-to-understand models that form the basis for more complex simulations. What follows is an exploration of the myriad ways that models have come to describe and define our world, from epidemiology and climate change to urban planning and the world chess championship. Highly engaging and nontechnical, this book will appeal to any readers interested in understanding the links between data and society and how our lives are being increasingly captured in numbers

TitleThe Transition to Chaos : Conservative Classical and Quantum Systems
Author(s)Reichl, Linda
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIV, 555 p. 176 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe classical and quantum dynamics of conservative systems governs the behavior of much of the world around us - from the dynamics of galaxies to the vibration and electronic behavior of molecules and the dynamics of systems formed from or driven by laser radiation. Most conservative dynamical systems contain some degree of chaotic behavior, ranging from a self-similar mixture of regular and chaotic motion, to fully developed chaos. This chaotic behavior has a profound effect on the dynamics. This book combines mathematical rigor with examples that illuminate the dynamical theory of chaotic systems. The emphasis of the 3rd Edition is on topics of modern interest, including scattering systems formed from molecules and nanoscale quantum devices, quantum control and destabilization of systems driven by laser radiation, and thermalization of condensed matter systems. The book is written on a level accessible to graduate students and to the general research community

TitleActive Matter Within and Around Us : From Self-Propelled Particles to Flocks and Living Forms
Author(s)Pismen, Len
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIII, 227 p. 236 illus., 216 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents a comprehensive review of various aspects of the novel and rapidly developing field of active matter, which encompasses a wide variety of self-organized self-driven energy-consuming media or agents. Most naturally occurring examples are of biological origin, spanning all scales from intracellular structures to swimming and crawling cells and microorganisms, to living tissues, bacterial colonies and flocks of birds. But the field also encompasses artificial systems, from colloids to soft robots. Intrinsically out of equilibrium and free of constraints of time-reversal symmetry, such systems display a range of surprising and unusual behaviors. In this book, the author emphasizes connections between fluid-mechanical, material, biological and technological aspects of active matter. He employs a minimum of mathematical tools, ensuring that the presentation is accessible to a wider scientific community. Richly illustrated, it gives the reader a clear picture of this fascinating field, its diverse phenomena and its open questions
