TitleAdvanced Materials and Technologies for Micro/Nano-Devices, Sensors and Actuators
Author(s)Gusev, Evgeni;Garfunkel, Eric;Dideikin, Arthur
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2010.
DescriptionXII, 314 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) entitled ???Advanced Materials and Technologies for Micro/Nano Devices, Sensors and Actuators??? was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, from June 29 to July 2, 2009. The main goal of the Workshop was to examine (at a fundamental level) the very complex scientific issues that pertain to the use of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS), devices and technologies in next generation commercial and defen- related applications. Micro- and nano-electromechanical systems represent rather broad and diverse technological areas, such as optical systems (micromirrors, waveguides, optical sensors, integrated subsystems), life sciences and lab equipment (micropumps, membranes, lab-on-chip, membranes, microfluidics), sensors (bio-sensors, chemical sensors, gas-phase sensors, sensors integrated with electronics) and RF applications for signal transmission (variable capacitors, tunable filters and antennas, switches, resonators). From a scientific viewpoint, this is a very multi-disciplinary field, including micro- and nano-mechanics (such as stresses in structural materials), electronic effects (e. g. charge transfer), general electrostatics, materials science, surface chemistry, interface science, (nano)tribology, and optics. It is obvious that in order to overcome the problems surrounding next-generation MEMS/NEMS devices and applications it is necessary to tackle them from different angles: theoreticians need to speak with mechanical engineers, and device engineers and modelers to listen to surface physicists. It was therefore one of the main objectives of the workshop to bring together a multidisciplinary team of distinguished researchers

TitleA Primer for Chiral Perturbation Theory
Author(s)Scherer, Stefan;Schindler, Matthias R
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012.
DescriptionIX, 338 p. 35 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteChiral Perturbation Theory, as effective field theory, is a commonly accepted and well established working tool, approximating quantum chromodynamics at energies well below typical hadron masses. This volume, based on a number of lectures and supplemented with additional material, provides a pedagogical introduction for graduate students and newcomers entering the field from related areas of nuclear and particle physics. Starting with the the Lagrangian of the strong interactions and general symmetry principles, the basic concepts of Chiral Perturbation Theory in the mesonic and baryonic sectors are developed. The application of these concepts is then illustrated with a number of examples. A large number of exercises (81, with complete solutions) are included to familiarize the reader with helpful calculational techniques

TitleTunneling Systems in Amorphous and Crystalline Solids
Author(s)Esquinazi, Pablo
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXXIII, 600 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a wealth of information on the influence of quantum-tunneling systems on the low-temperature properties of solids. It reviews the thermodynamic, acoustic, dielectric and optical properties of amorphous and crystalline solids. The latest experiments on long-time spectral diffusion and heat release, electric field and strain effects, quantum tunneling on light atoms like H and D, as well as non-equilibrium phenomena are thoroughly discussed in terms of the interaction with and between tunneling systems. Several outstanding theoretical contributions provide an overview of the most original ideas and theoretical methods used to understand the nature and dynamics of tunneling systems in solids and their interactions. The book introduces the non-expert reader to the phenomenological standard tunneling model and its further development, the soft potential model. The chapters of the book give full descriptions of the experimental and theoretical methods of the relevant experiments and models in the fascinating field of the physics of glasses and disordered solids

TitleAdvanced Optoelectronic Devices
Author(s)Dragoman, Daniela;Dragoman, Mircea
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXII, 424 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAdvanced Optoelectronic Devices gives the first unified presentation of the major developments in this field, both in terms of their physical background and with respect to applications. It covers devices based on the properties of quantum wells and fiber optics together with their applications in optical communications and signal processing. It also includes a comprehensive mathematical treatment and state-of-the-art presentation of the latest research in applied optoelectronics and semiconductor physics. The two different and complementary physical theories that describe optoelectronic devices, namely the electromagnetic field theory and quantum mechanics, are treated jointly in such a way as to reveal links and analogies wherever possible. This provides a better understanding of the basic processes. Therefore, the book is not simply a catalogue of different exotic devices but a presentation of a great variety of devices based on the same, or similar, physical phenomena

TitleVisioneers: How a Group of Elite Scientsts Pursued Space Colonies, Nanotechnologies, and a limitless Future
Author(s)W. Patrick McCray
EditioneBook
PublicationPrinceton, Princeton University Press, 2013.
Descriptionxii, 351p. : Princeton Scholarship Online - Oxford University Press
Abstract NoteIn 1969, Princeton physicist Gerard O'Neill began looking outward to space colonies as the new frontier for humanity's expansion. A decade later, Eric Drexler, an MIT-trained engineer, turned his attention to the molecular world as the place where society's future needs could be met using self-replicating nanoscale machines. These modern utopians predicted that their technologies could transform society as humans mastered the ability to create new worlds, undertook atomic-scale engineering, and, if truly successful, overcame their own biological limits. The Visioneers tells the story of how these scientists and the communities they fostered imagined, designed, and popularized speculative technologies such as space colonies and nanotechnologies.
