TitleThe Three-Body Problem and the Equations of Dynamics : Poincar?????s Foundational Work on Dynamical Systems Theory
Author(s)Poincar??, Henri
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXXII, 248 p. 9 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteHere is an accurate and readable translation of a seminal article by Henri Poincar?? that is a classic in the study of dynamical systems popularly called chaos theory. In an effort to understand the stability of orbits in the solar system, Poincar?? applied a Hamiltonian formulation to the equations of planetary motion and studied these differential equations in the limited case of three bodies to arrive at properties of the equations??? solutions, such as orbital resonances and horseshoe orbits.?? Poincar?? wrote for professional mathematicians and astronomers interested in celestial mechanics and differential equations. Contemporary historians of math or science and researchers in dynamical systems and planetary motion with an interest in the origin or history of their field will find his work fascinating.??

TitleDynamical Chaos in Planetary Systems
Author(s)Shevchenko, Ivan I
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXII, 376 p. 139 illus., 46 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the first monograph dedicated entirely to problems of stability and chaotic behaviour in planetary systems and its subsystems. The author explores the three rapidly developing interplaying fields of resonant and chaotic dynamics of Hamiltonian systems, the dynamics of Solar system bodies, and the dynamics of exoplanetary systems. The necessary concepts, methods and tools used to study dynamical chaos (such as symplectic maps, Lyapunov exponents and timescales, chaotic diffusion rates, stability diagrams and charts) are described and then used to show in detail how the observed dynamical architectures arise in the Solar system (and its subsystems) and in exoplanetary systems. The book concentrates, in particular, on chaotic diffusion and clearing effects. The potential readership of this book includes scientists and students working in astrophysics, planetary science, celestial mechanics, and nonlinear dynamics

TitleLaser Doppler Vibrometry : A Multimedia Guide to its Features and Usage
Author(s)Tomasini, Enrico Primo;Castellini, Paolo
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2020.
DescriptionXIII, 164 p. 149 illus., 118 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a continuous learning tool for experienced technical staff facing laser vibrometry technology for the first time. The book covers both theoretical aspects and practical applications of laser Doppler vibrometry, and is accompanied by a multimedia presentation that allows the audience to browse the content and come as close as possible to performing real experiments. After a brief introduction, Chapter 2 presents supporting theory, providing general information on light sources, light scattering and interference for a better understanding of the rest of the book. Chapter 3 examines the theory of laser vibrometers, explaining interferometers from an optical perspective and in terms of the related electronics. It also addresses options like tracking filters and different signal demodulation strategies, since these have a significant impact on the practical use of vibrometers. Chapter 4 explores the configurations that are encountered in today???s instrumentation, with a focus on providing practical suggestions on the use of laser vibrometers. Lastly, Chapter 5 investigates metrology for vibration and shock measurements using laser interferometry, and analyses the uncertainty of laser vibrometers in depth

TitleVibro-Acoustics, Volume 3
Author(s)Nilsson, Anders;Liu, Bilong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2016.
DescriptionXIII, 275 p. 55 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis three-volume book gives a thorough and comprehensive presentation of vibration and acoustic theories. Different from traditional textbooks which typically deal with some aspects of either acoustic or vibration problems, it is unique of this book to combine those two correlated subjects together. Moreover, it provides fundamental analysis and mathematical descriptions for several crucial phenomena of Vibro-Acoustics which are quite useful in noise reduction, including how structures are excited, energy flows from an excitation point to a sound radiating surface, and finally how a structure radiates noise to a surrounding fluid. Many measurement results included in the text make the reading interesting and informative. Problems/questions are listed at the end of each chapter and the solutions are provided. This will help the readers to understand the topics of Vibro-Acoustics more deeply. The book should be of interest to anyone interested in sound and vibration, vehicle acoustics, ship acoustics and interior aircraft noise. This is the third volume, and presents 201 problems and their solutions plus a summary of the main results from volumes 1 and 2

TitleIUTAM Symposium on Diffraction and Scattering in Fluid Mechanics and Elasticity : Proceeding of the IUTAM Symposium held in Manchester, United Kingdom, 16???20 July 2000
Author(s)Abrahams, I. David;Martin, Paul A;Simon, Michael J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002.
DescriptionXIV, 353 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThese Conference Proceedings are intended to summarise the latest developments in diffraction and scattering theory as reported at the IU?? TAM Symposium on Diffraction and Scattering in Fluid Mechanics and Elasticity held in Manchester, England on 16-20 July 2000. This in?? formal meeting was organised to discuss mathematical advances, both from the theoretical and more applied points of view. However, its pri?? mary goal was to bring together groups of researchers working in dis?? parate application areas, but who nevertheless share common models, phenomenological features arising in such problems, and common math?? ematical tools. To this end, we were delighted to have four Plenary Speakers, Professors Allan Pierce, Ed Kerschen, Roger Grimshaw and John Willis FRS, who are undisputed leaders in the four thematic ar?? eas of our meeting (these are respectively acoustics, aeroacoustics, water or other free surface waves, elasticity). These Proceedings should offer an excellent vehicle for continuing the dialogue between these groups of researchers. The participants were invited because of their expertise and recent contributions to this field. Collectively, there were around 90 contrib?? utors to the Symposium from some 13 countries located all around the world. These included 45 speakers, 35 co-authors and about 10 other delegates. Individuals came from many of the major international cen?? tres of excellence in the field of scattering theory

TitleElectroacoustical Reference Data
Author(s)Eargle, John
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2002.
DescriptionIX, 378 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe need for a general collection of electroacoustical reference and design data in graphical form has been felt by acousticians and engineers for some time. This type of data can otherwise only be found in a collection of handbooks. Therefore, it is the author's intention that this book serve as a single source for many electroacoustical reference and system design requirements. In form, the volume closely resembles Frank Massa's Acoustic Design Charts, a handy book dating from 1942 that has long been out of print. The basic format of Massa's book has been followed here: For each entry, graphical data are presented on the right page, while text, examples, and refer?? ences appear on the left page. In this manner, the user can solve a given problem without thumbing from one page to the next. All graphs and charts have been scaled for ease in data entry and reading. The book is divided into the following sections: A. General Acoustical Relationships. This section covers the behavior of sound transmis?? sion in reverberant and free fields, sound absorption and diffraction, and directional characteris?? tics of basic sound radiators. B. Loudspeakers. Loudspeakers are discussed in terms of basic relationships regarding cone excursion, sensitivity, efficiency, and directivity index, power ratings, and architectural layout. c. Microphones. The topics in this section include microphone sensitivity and noise rating, analysis of directional properties, stereo microphone array characteristics, proximity effects, and boundary conditions. D. Signal Transmission
