DescriptionXLIV, 278 p. 123 illus., 72 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book details science of hypersonics especially focusing on propulsion aspects such as supersonic combustion ramjets and their applications, and also includes lift and drag in hypersonic flight and their mathematical and physical explanation. It provides charts and data from hypersonic testing and measurements from actual vehicles and engines built in the past. Criteria to dimension hypersonic powered and unpowered vehicles (gliders) based on fundamental fluid dynamics and backed by flight testing; criteria to preliminary sizing vehicles and preliminary dimensioning of supersonic combustors are introduced. The book will serve better theoretical understanding of drag, lift and how to apply them to the design of hypersonic vehicles, as well as data to size vehicles and supersonic combustion ramjet (SCRJ) systems. This book will be a useful reference for researchers and designers in hypersonic vehicles but also second or third-year graduate students

TitlePlasma Theory : An Advanced Guide for Graduate Students
Author(s)Rozhansky, Vladimir
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionXI, 363 p. 108 illus., 11 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook, based on the author???s classroom-tested lecture course, helps graduate students master the advanced plasma theory needed to unlock results at the forefront of current research. It is structured around a two semester course, beginning with kinetic theory and transport processes, while the second semester is devoted to plasma dynamics, including MHD theory, equilibrium, and stability. More advanced problems such as neoclassical theory, stochastization of the magnetic field lines, and edge plasma physics are also considered, and each chapter ends with an illustrative example which demonstrates a concrete application of the theory. The distinctive feature of this book is that, unlike most other advanced plasma science texts, phenomena in both low and high temperature plasma are considered simultaneously so that theory of slightly ionized and fully ionized plasmas is presented holistically. This book will therefore be ideal as a classroom text or self-study guide for a wide cohort of graduate students working in different areas like nuclear fusion, gas discharge physics, low temperature plasma applications, astrophysics, and more. It is also a useful reference for more seasoned researchers

TitleMechanics of Flow-Induced Vibration : Physical Modeling and Control Strategies
Author(s)Jaiman, Rajeev;Li, Guojun;Chizfahm, Amir
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXX, 1021 p. 698 illus., 491 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses various passive and active techniques for controlling unsteady flow dynamics and associated coupled mechanics of fluid-structure interaction. Coupled multiphysics and multidomain simulations are emerging and challenging research areas, which have received significant attention during the past decade. One of the most common multiphysics and multidomain problems is fluid-structure interaction (FSI), i.e., the study of coupled physical systems involving fluid and a structure that have a mechanical influence on each other. Regardless of the application area, the investigation toward modeling of fluid-structure interaction and the underlying mechanisms in dealing with coupled fluid-structure instability with real-world applications remains a challenge to scientists and engineers. This book is designed for students and researchers who seek knowledge of computational modeling and control strategies for fluid-structure interaction. Specifically, this book provides a comprehensive review of the underlying unsteady physics and coupled mechanical aspects of the fluid-structure interaction of freely vibrating bluff bodies, the self-induced flapping of thin flexible structures, and aeroelasticity of shell structures. Understanding flow-induced loads and vibrations can lead to safer and cost-effective structures, especially for light and high-aspect ratio structures with increased flexibility and harsh environmental conditions. Using the body-fitted and moving mesh formulations, the physical insights associated with structure-to-fluid mass ratios, Reynolds number, nonlinear structural deformation, proximity interference, near-wall contacts, free-surface, and other interacting physical fields are covered in this book. In conjunction with the control techniques, data-driven model reduction approaches based on subspace projection and deep neural calculus are covered for low-dimensional modeling of unsteady fluid-structure interaction

TitleLiutex and Third Generation of Vortex Identification : Workshop from Aerospace and Aeronautics World Forum 2021
Author(s)Wang, Yiqian;Gao, Yisheng;Liu, Chaoqun
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXXXII, 403 p. 253 illus., 232 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis proceedings highlights the applications of the newly introduced physical quantity Liutex in hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. Liutex is used to represent the fascinating rotational motion of fluids, i.e., the vortex. Ubiquitously seen in nature and engineering applications, the definition of vortices has been elusive. The Liutex vector provides a unique and systematic description of vortices. The proceedings collects papers presented in the invited workshop "Liutex and Third Generation of Vortex Identification for Engineering Applications" from Aerospace and Aeronautics World Forum 2021. The papers in this book cover both the theoretical aspects of Liutex and many applications in hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. The proceedings is a good reference for researchers in fluid mechanics who are interested in learning about the wide scope of applications of Liutex and using it to develop a new understanding of their research subjects

TitleMicroparticle Dynamics in Electrostatic and Flow Fields
Author(s)Chen, Sheng
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXIX, 138 p. 87 illus., 81 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis proposes new approaches for modelling contacting interactions and electrostatic interactions between microparticles in the framework of the discrete element method and presents a systematic investigation on the agglomeration, migration and deposition of microparticles in presence of electrostatic and flow fields. It reports an exponential-form scaling for the size distribution of early-stage agglomerates in homogeneous isotropic turbulence and formulate the agglomeration and deagglomeration rates. The evolution of spherical clouds of charged particles that migrate under the action of an external electrostatic field is then investigated. Scaling laws of cloud radius and particle number density are obtained by solving a continuum convection equation. Finally, it investigates the deposition of charged particles on a flat plane and fibers. A dimensionless adhesion parameter is constructed to predict the structure of deposits. The temporal evolution of the deposit structure, particle capture efficiency, and the pressure drop are displayed with varying values of Coulomb repulsion and adhesion magnitudes.

TitleFlow Noise : Theory
Author(s)Doolan, Con;Moreau, Danielle
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022.
DescriptionXII, 188 p. 61 illus., 18 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book highlights the importance of sound produced by fluid flow or flow-induced noise. Noise created by unsteady flow creates high levels of environmental noise pollution, a known public health problem, and can compromise the acoustic qualities of marine vessels. There is a seemingly ever-growing list of modern technology that created flow-induced noise which includes aircraft, wind turbines, submarines, drones, high-speed rail, and cooling fans. More scientists and engineers are required to incorporate the effects of flow-induced noise in their work. This book also provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory underpinning the understanding of flow-induced noise

TitleFluid Mechanics of Viscoplasticity
Author(s)Huilgol, Raja R;Georgiou, Georgios C
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVI, 392 p. 39 illus., 29 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book considers the kinematics and dynamics of the flows of fluids exhibiting a yield stress. Continuum mechanics governing the fluid mechanics is described. Two chapters are dedicated to analytical solutions to several steady and unsteady flows of viscoplastic fluids, including flows with pressure-dependent rheological parameters. Perturbation methods, variational inequalities to solve fluid flow problems, and the use of energy methods are discussed. Numerical modeling using augmented Lagrangian, operator splitting, finite difference, and lattice Boltzmann methods are employed. The second edition provides new sections on flows of yield stress fluids with pressure-dependent rheological parameters, on flows with wall slip, and on deriving the fundamental equations for Boltzmann lattice materials. Furthermore new material on the lubrication approximation and applications of finite differences has been added

TitleTurbulence???an Odyssey : Origins and Evolution of a Research Field at the Interface of Science and Engineering
Author(s)Eckert, Michael
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVI, 208 p. 32 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteTurbulence is a research field where high expectations have met with recurrent frustration. It is a common perception among physicists, mathematicians and engineers that there is a "big mystery" behind the phenomenon of turbulence. Its history has also remained anything but well researched. Unlike topics such as quantum theory, which began to attract physics historians as long as fifty years ago, turbulence has - until now - received only little professional historical investigation. In this book, which complements his earlier SpringerBrief "The Turbulence Problem", the author sketches the history of turbulence from the vantage point of its roots (Part I), the basic concepts (Part II) and the formation of a scientific community that regarded turbulence as a research field in its own right (Part III). From this perspective turbulence research appears to undertake an odyssey through uncharted territories. The book follows this development up until a conference in Marseille in the year 1961, which marked the inauguration of turbulence in the words of its organizer as ???a new science???. The epilogue contains some observations about turbulence research since 1961. This book provides a rich source of information for all those interested in the history of this major field of basic and applied science
