Title | Introduction to Simple Shock Waves in Air : With Numerical Solutions Using Artificial Viscosity |
Author(s) | Prunty, Se??n |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XV, 344 p. 164 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides an elementary introduction to one-dimensional fluid flow problems involving shock waves in air. The differential equations of fluid flow are approximated by finite difference equations and these in turn are numerically integrated in a stepwise manner, with artificial viscosity introduced into the numerical calculations in order to deal with shocks. This treatment of the subject is focused on the finite-difference approach to solve the coupled differential equations of fluid flow and presents the results arising from the numerical solution using Mathcad programming. Both plane and spherical shock waves are discussed with particular emphasis on very strong explosive shocks in air. This expanded second edition features substantial new material on sound wave parameters, Riemann's method for numerical integration of the equations of motion, approximate analytical expressions for weak shock waves, short duration piston motion, numerical results for shock wave interactions, and new appendices on the piston withdrawal problem and numerical results for a closed shock tube. This text will appeal to students, researchers, and professionals in shock wave research and related fields. Students in particular will appreciate the benefits of numerical methods in fluid mechanics and the level of presentation |

Title | Liutex and Third Generation of Vortex Definition and Identification : An Invited Workshop from Chaos 2020 |
Author(s) | Liu, Chaoqun;Wang, Yiqian |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XXXI, 468 p. 343 illus., 320 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book collects papers presented in the Invited Workshop, ???Liutex and Third Generation of Vortex Definition and Identification for Turbulence,??? from CHAOS2020, June 9-12, 2020, which was held online as a virtual conference. Liutex is a new physical quantity introduced by Prof. Chaoqun Liu of the University of Texas at Arlington. It is a vector and could give a unique and accurate mathematical definition for fluid rotation or vortex. The papers in this volume include some Liutex theories and many applications in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics and thermal dynamics including turbine machinery. As vortex exists everywhere in the universe, a mathematical definition of vortex or Liutex will play a critical role in scientific research. There is almost no place without vortex in fluid dynamics. As a projection, the Liutex theory will play an important role on the investigations of the vortex dynamics in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, oceanography, meteorology, metallurgy, civil engineering, astronomy, biology, etc. and to the researches of the generation, sustenance, modelling and controlling of turbulence |

Title | Optimal Auxiliary Functions Method for Nonlinear Dynamical Systems |
Author(s) | Marinca, Vasile;Herisanu, Nicolae;Marinca, Bogdan |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 479 p. 442 illus., 414 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the optimal auxiliary functions method and applies it to various engineering problems and in particular in boundary layer problems. The cornerstone of the presented procedure is the concept of ???optimal auxiliary functions??? which are needed to obtain accurate results in an efficient way. Unlike other known analytic approaches, this procedure provides us with a simple but rigorous way to control and adjust the convergence of the solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems. The optimal auxiliary functions are depending on some convergence-control parameters whose optimal values are rigorously determined from mathematical point of view. The capital strength of our procedure is its fast convergence, since after only one iteration, we obtain very accurate analytical solutions which are very easy to be verified. Moreover, no simplifying hypothesis or assumptions are made. The book contains a large amount of practical models from various fields of engineering such as classical and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, nonlinear oscillations, electrical machines, and many more. The book is a continuation of our previous books ???Nonlinear Dynamical Systems in Engineering. Some Approximate Approaches???, Springer-2011 and ???The Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method. Engineering Applications???, Springer-2015 |

Title | Interfacial Wave Theory of Pattern Formation in Solidification : Dendrites, Fingers, Cells and Free Boundaries |
Author(s) | Xu, Jian-Jun |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XX, 591 p. 168 illus., 69 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This comprehensive work explores interfacial instability and pattern formation in dynamic systems away from the equilibrium state in solidification and crystal growth. Further, this significantly expanded 2nd edition introduces and reviews the progress made during the last two decades. In particular, it describes the most prominent pattern formation phenomena commonly observed in material processing and crystal growth in the framework of the previously established interfacial wave theory, including free dendritic growth from undercooled melt, cellular growth and eutectic growth in directional solidification, as well as viscous fingering in Hele-Shaw flow. It elucidates the key problems, systematically derives their mathematical solutions by pursuing a unified, asymptotic approach, and finally carefully examines these results by comparing them with the available experimental results. The asymptotic approach described here will be useful for the investigation of pattern formation phenomena occurring in a much broader class of inhomogeneous dynamical systems. In addition, the results on global stability and selection mechanisms of pattern formation will be of particular interest to researchers working on material processing and crystal growth. The stability mechanisms of a curved front and the pattern formation have been fundamental subjects in the areas of condensed-matter physics, materials science, crystal growth, and fluid mechanics for some time now. This book offers a stimulating and insightful introduction for all physicists, engineers and applied mathematicians working in the fields of soft condensed-matter physics, materials science, mechanical and chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, and nonlinear sciences |

Title | Asymptotic Representation of Relaxation Oscillations in Lasers |
Author(s) | Grigorieva, Elena V;Kaschenko, Sergey A |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | VIII, 230 p. 73 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this book we analyze relaxation oscillations in models of lasers with nonlinear elements controlling light dynamics. The models are based on rate equations taking into account periodic modulation of parameters, optoelectronic delayed feedback, mutual coupling between lasers, intermodal interaction and other factors. With the aim to study relaxation oscillations we present the special asymptotic method of integration for ordinary differential equations and differential-difference equations. As a result, they are reduced to discrete maps. Analyzing the maps we describe analytically such nonlinear phenomena in lasers as multistability of large-amplitude relaxation cycles, bifurcations of cycles, controlled switching of regimes, phase synchronization in an ensemble of coupled systems and others. The book can be fruitful for students and technicians in nonlinear laser dynamics and in differential equations |
