| Description | XXIV, 476 p. 176 illus : online resource |
| Abstract Note | The modeling of reactive flows has progressed mainly with advances in aerospace, which gave birth to a new science called aerothermochemistry, as well as through developments in chemical and process engineering. The methods employed, the phenomena investigated, and the aims of modeling differ for each field; however, in all cases, the results obtained have considerably enriched the working knowledge of reactive flows. This work examines basic concepts and methods necessary to study reactive flows and transfer phenomena in areas such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and chemistry. Specific topics covered include: * Equations of state * Transfer phenomena and chemical kinetics * Balance equations of reactive flows * Dimensionless numbers and similarity * Chemical reactors * Coupled phenomena * Turbulent flow concepts * Boundary layers and fluid layers * Reactive and nonreactive waves * Interface phenomena * Multiphase flow concepts The book presents tools of interest to graduate students, researchers in mathematical physics, and engineers who wish to investigate problems of reactive flows. Portions of the text may be used in courses on the physics of liquids or in seminars on mechanics |

| Title | Asymptotic Approximations for the Sound Generated by Aerofoils in Unsteady Subsonic Flows |
| Author(s) | Ayton, Lorna |
| Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
| Description | XXI, 178 p. 48 illus., 6 illus. in color : online resource |
| Abstract Note | This thesis investigates the sound generated by solid bodies in steady subsonic flows with unsteady perturbations, as is typically used when determining the noise generated by turbulent interactions. The focus is predominantly on modelling the sound generated by blades within an aircraft engine, and the solutions are presented as asymptotic approximations. Key analytical techniques, such as the Wiener-Hopf method, and the matched asymptotic expansion method are clearly detailed. The results allow for the effect of variations in the steady flow or blade shape on the noise generated to be analysed much faster than when solving the problem numerically or considering it experimentally |

| Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2006. |
| Description | XVI, 358 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | The book deals with collective and stochastic processes in astrophysical discs involving theory, observations, and the results of modelling. Among others, it examines the spiral-vortex structure in galactic and accretion disks , stochastic and ordered structures in the developed turbulence. It also describes sources of turbulence in the accretion disks, internal structure of disk in the vicinity of a black hole, numerical modelling of Be envelopes in binaries, gaseous disks in spiral galaxies with shock waves formation, observation of accretion disks in a binary system and mass distribution of luminous matter in disk galaxies. The editors adaptly brought together collective and stochastic phenomena in the modern field of astrophysical discs, their formation, structure, and evolution involving the methodology to deal with, the results of observation and modelling, thereby advancing the study in this important branch of astrophysics and benefiting Professional Researchers, Lecturers, and Graduate Students |

| Title | Industrial Electromagnetics Modelling : Proceedings of the POLYMODEL 6, the Sixth Annual Conference of the North East Polytechnics Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation Group, held at the Moat House Hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne, May 1983 |
| Author(s) | Caldwell, J;Bradley, R |
| Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983. |
| Description | IX, 234 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | During the past few years the rapid development of computer tech?? nology has made high power computing facilities more readily accessible to a greater proportion of our industrial and academic community. This development coupled with the recent upsurge in mathematical modelling and computer simulation has led to signif?? icant developments in electromagnetic field theory and its applic?? ations to industry. In view of such developments and the present high interest to both academics and industry the theme chosen for the Polymodel 6 Conference held at Newcastle upon Tyne in May 1983 was Industrial Electromagnetics Modelling. To date the North East Polytechnics Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation Group has organised five successful Polymodel. conferences each with a different theme. The objectives of the Polymodel group include the promotion of collaborative research between Newcastle, Sunderland and Teesside Polytechnics and industry in the areas of mathematical modelling and computer simulation. The aim of the Polymodel 6 Conference was to call on and use the modelling and computer.simulation expertise of eminent academics and industrialists who are deeply involved in the area of electro?? magnetics. These proceedings have a twofold purpose in that they contain current analytical and numerical techniques relevant to electromagnetic field problems and useful ideas on the modelling and simulation techniques which are most appropriate. It was also felt important to include implications. of. computer developments (both hardware and software) on such work |

| Title | Mathematical and Statistical Developments of Evolutionary Theory |
| Author(s) | Lessard, S |
| Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1990. |
| Description | 380 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Mathematical and statistical approaches to evolutionary theory are numerous. The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held at the Universite de Montreal, Montreal, August 3-21, 1987, was an opportunity to review most of the classical approaches and to study the more recent developments. The participation of theoretical biologists and geneticists as well as applied mathematicians and statisticians made possible exchanges of ideas between students and scholars having different views on the subject. These Proceedings contain the lecture notes of seven (7) of the eleven (11) series of lectures that were given. ESS (Evolutionarily Stable Stragety) theory is considered from many perspectives, from a game-theoretic approach to understanding behavior and evolution (W.G.S. Hines), and a systematic classification of properties and patterns of ESS's (C. Cannings) to particular applications of the differential geometry of the Shahshahani metric (E. Akin). Extensions of ESS theory to sexual populations and finite populations, not to mention games between relatives, are presented (W.G.S. Hines). Special attention is given to the classical game called the War of Attrition but with n players and random rewards (C. Cannings). The Shahshahani metric is also used to show the occurrence of cycling in the two-locus, two-allele model (E. Akin). Various inference problems in population genetics are adressed. Procedures to detect and measure selection components and polymorphism (in particular, the Wahlund effect) at one or several loci from mother-offspring combinations in natural populations are discussed at length (F.B. Christiansen) |

| Title | Fractal Geometry and Analysis |
| Author(s) | B??lair, Jacques;Dubuc, Serge |
| Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1991. |
| Description | XV, 472 p. 85 illus : online resource |
| Abstract Note | This ASI- which was also the 28th session of the Seminaire de mathematiques superieures of the Universite de Montreal - was devoted to Fractal Geometry and Analysis. The present volume is the fruit of the work of this Advanced Study Institute. We were fortunate to have with us Prof. Benoit Mandelbrot - the creator of numerous concepts in Fractal Geometry - who gave a series of lectures on multifractals, iteration of analytic functions, and various kinds of fractal stochastic processes. Different foundational contributions for Fractal Geometry like measure theory, dy?? namical systems, iteration theory, branching processes are recognized. The geometry of fractal sets and the analytical tools used to investigate them provide a unifying theme of this book. The main topics that are covered are then as follows. Dimension Theory. Many definitions of fractional dimension have been proposed, all of which coincide on "regular" objects, but often take different values for a given fractal set. There is ample discussion on piecewise estimates yielding actual values for the most common dimensions (Hausdorff, box-counting and packing dimensions). The dimension theory is mainly discussed by Mendes-France, Bedford, Falconer, Tricot and Rata. Construction of fractal sets. Scale in variance is a fundamental property of fractal sets |

| Title | Shape Optimization and Free Boundaries |
| Author(s) | Delfour, Michel C |
| Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992. |
| Description | XVIII, 462 p. 13 illus : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Shape optimization deals with problems where the design or control variable is no longer a vector of parameters or functions but the shape of a geometric domain. They include engineering applications to shape and structural optimization, but also original applications to image segmentation, control theory, stabilization of membranes and plates by boundary variations, etc. Free and moving boundary problems arise in an impressingly wide range of new and challenging applications to change of phase. The class of problems which are amenable to this approach can arise from such diverse disciplines as combustion, biological growth, reactive geological flows in porous media, solidification, fluid dynamics, electrochemical machining, etc. The objective and orginality of this NATO-ASI was to bring together theories and examples from shape optimization, free and moving boundary problems, and materials with microstructure which are fundamental to static and dynamic domain and boundary problems |

| Title | New Perspectives in Turbulence |
| Author(s) | Sirovich, Lawrence |
| Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1991. |
| Description | XV, 367 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | This collection of articles has its origin in a meeting which took place June 12-15, 1989, on the grounds of Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island. The meeting was blessed by beautiful, balmy weather and an idyllic setting. The sessions themselves took place in Ochre Court, one of the elegant and stately old summer cottages for which Newport is acclaimed. Lectures were presented in the grand ballroom overlooking the famous Cliff Walk and Block Island Sound. Counter to general belief, the pleasant surroundings did not appear to encourage truancy or in any other way diminish the quality of the meeting. On the contrary, for the four days of the meeting there was a high level of excitement and optimism about the new perspectives in turbulence, a tone that carried over to lively dinner and evening discussions. The participants represented a broad range of backgrounds, extending from pure mathemat?? ics to experimental engineering. A dialogue began with the first speakers which cut across the boundaries and gave to the meeting a mood of unity which persisted |
