|Title||Radial and nonradial pulsations as probes of steller physics : Proceedings of the 185th colloquium of the International Astronomical Union, held at Institute of Astronomy, Catholic University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium 26 - 31 July, 2001|
|Author(s)||Conny Aerts (ed.);Timothy R. Bedding (ed.);Jorgen Christensen-Dalsgaard (ed.)|
|Publication||California, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2002.|
|Contents Note||The meeting was dedicated to the scientific achievements of two Belgians;
Paul Ledoux (1914 - 1988)
Paul Smeyers (1934 -)
both pioneers in the theoretical research on stellar oscillations. The idea of using non-radial pulsations to probe stellar interiors was introduced by Paul Ledoux in a seminal paper in Astrophysical Journal published in 1951. This paper initiated the research domain which is nowadays termed as 'asteroseismology'. Paul Ledoux laid down the theory of the hydrodynamics of stellar oscillations and stellar stability. Paul Smeyers contributed significantly in many different areas of theoretical studies of stellar oscillations.|
