Title | New Perspectives in Turbulence |
Author(s) | Sirovich, Lawrence |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1991. |
Description | XV, 367 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This collection of articles has its origin in a meeting which took place June 12-15, 1989, on the grounds of Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island. The meeting was blessed by beautiful, balmy weather and an idyllic setting. The sessions themselves took place in Ochre Court, one of the elegant and stately old summer cottages for which Newport is acclaimed. Lectures were presented in the grand ballroom overlooking the famous Cliff Walk and Block Island Sound. Counter to general belief, the pleasant surroundings did not appear to encourage truancy or in any other way diminish the quality of the meeting. On the contrary, for the four days of the meeting there was a high level of excitement and optimism about the new perspectives in turbulence, a tone that carried over to lively dinner and evening discussions. The participants represented a broad range of backgrounds, extending from pure mathemat?? ics to experimental engineering. A dialogue began with the first speakers which cut across the boundaries and gave to the meeting a mood of unity which persisted |

Title | Real and Complex Dynamical Systems |
Author(s) | Branner, B;Hjorth, Poul |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1995. |
Description | XVIII, 348 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains edited versions of 11 contributions given by main speakers at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on lReal and Complex Dynamical Systems in Hiller0d, Denmark, June 20th - July 2nd, 1993. The vision of the institute was to illustrate the interplay between two important fields of Mathematics: Real Dynamical Systems and Complex Dynamical Systems. The interaction between these two fields has been growing over the years. Problems in Real Dynamical Systems have recently been solved using complex tools in the real or by extension to the complex. In return, problems in Complex Dynamical Systems have been settled using results from Real Dynamical Systems. The programme of the institute was to examine the state of the art of central parts of both Real and Complex Dynamical Systems, to reinforce contact between the two aspects of the theory and to make recent progress in each accessible to a larger group of mathematicians |

Title | Schr??dinger Operators The Quantum Mechanical Many-Body Problem : Proceedings of a Workshop Held at Aarhus, Denmark 15 May - 1 August 1991 |
Author(s) | Balslev, Erik |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992. |
Description | VIII, 264 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In these proceedings basic questions regarding n-body Schr|dinger operators are dealt with, such as asymptotic completeness of systems with long-range potentials (including Coulomb), a new proof of completeness for short-range potentials, energy asymptotics of large Coulomb systems, asymptotic neutrality of polyatomic molecules. Other contributions deal withdifferent types of problems, such as quantum stability, Schr|dinger operators on a torus and KAM theory, semiclassical theory, time delay, radiation conditions, magnetic Stark resonances, random Schr|dinger operators and stochastic spectral analysis. The volume presents the results in such detail that it could well serve as basic literature for seminar work |

Title | Wavelet Basics |
Author(s) | Chan, Y. T |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1995. |
Description | IX, 134 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Since the study of wavelets is a relatively new area, much of the research coming from mathematicians, most of the literature uses terminology, concepts and proofs that may, at times, be difficult and intimidating for the engineer. Wavelet Basics has therefore been written as an introductory book for scientists and engineers. The mathematical presentation has been kept simple, the concepts being presented in elaborate detail in a terminology that engineers will find familiar. Difficult ideas are illustrated with examples which will also aid in the development of an intuitive insight. Chapter 1 reviews the basics of signal transformation and discusses the concepts of duals and frames. Chapter 2 introduces the wavelet transform, contrasts it with the short-time Fourier transform and clarifies the names of the different types of wavelet transforms. Chapter 3 links multiresolution analysis, orthonormal wavelets and the design of digital filters. Chapter 4 gives a tour d'horizon of topics of current interest: wavelet packets and discrete time wavelet transforms, and concludes with applications in signal processing |

Title | Operators and Function Theory |
Author(s) | Power, S.C |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1985. |
Description | XVI, 383 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the modern study of Hilbert space operators there has been an increasingly subtle involvement with analytic function theory. This is evident in the analysis of subnormal operators, Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators, for example. On the other hand the operator theoretic viewpoint of interpolation by analytic functions is a powerful one. There has been significant activity in recent years, within these enriching interactions, and the time seemed right for an overview ot the main lines of development. The Advanced Study Institute 'Operators and Function Theory' in Lancaster, 1984, was devoted to this, and this book contains ex?? panded versions (and one contraction) of the main lecture prog?? ramme. These varied articles, by prominent researchers, include, for example, a survey of recent results on subnormal operators, recent work of Soviet mathematicians on Hankel and Toeplitz operators, expositions of the decomposition theory and inter?? polation theory for Bergman, Besov and Bloch spaces, with applic?? ations for special operators, the Krein space approach to inter?? polation problems, ?????? and much more. It is hoped that these proceedings will bring all this lively mathematics to a wider audience. Sincere thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for the generous support that made the institute possible, and to the London Mathematical Society and the British Council for important additional support. Warm thanks also go to Barry Johnson and the L.M.S. for early guidance, and to my colleague Graham Jameson for much organisational support |

Title | Solved problems in analysis: As Applied to Gamma, Beta, Legendre and Besssel Functions |
Author(s) | Orin J Farrell ;Bertram Ross |
Publication | New York, Dover Publications, Inc., 1963. |
Description | vi, 410p. |
Abstract Note | Nearly 200 problems, each with a detailed, worked-out solution, deal with the properties and applications of the gamma and beta functions, Legendre polynomials, and Bessel functions. The first two chapters examine gamma and beta functions, including applications to certain geometrical and physical problems such as heat-flow in a straight wire. The following two chapters treat Legendre polynomials, addressing applications to specific series expansions, steady-state heat-flow temperature distribution, gravitational potential of a circular lamina, and application of Gauss's mechanical quadrature formula with pertinent table. The final chapters explore Bessel functions, discussing differentiation formulas, generating functions, relations to Legendre polynomials, and other applications.
This volume constitutes a useful tool for professional engineers and experimental physicists. Students of mathematics, physics, and engineering will particularly benefit from the book's expanded solutions. |
