TitleExpanding universe: A Primer on Relativistic Cosmology
Author(s)William D. Heacox
PublicationCambridge , Cambridge University Press, 2015.
Descriptionxx, 272p.
Abstract NoteCosmology - the science of the Universe at large - has experienced a renaissance in the decades bracketing the turn of the twenty-first century. Exploring our emerging understanding of cosmology, this text takes two complementary points of view: the physical principles underlying theories of cosmology, and the observable consequences of models of Universal expansion. The book develops cosmological models based on fundamental physical principles, with mathematics limited to the minimum necessary to keep the material accessible for students of physics and astronomy at the advanced undergraduate level. A substantial review of general relativity leading up to the Einstein field equations is included, with derivations of explicit formulations connecting observable features of the Universe to models of its expansion. Self-contained and up to date in respect of modern observations, the text provides a solid theoretical grounding in modern cosmology while preparing readers for the changes that will inevitably come from future observations.

TitleBeyond the galaxy: How humanity looked beyond our MilkyWay and discovered the entire Universe
Author(s)Ethan Siegel
PublicationSingapore, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2016.
Descriptionx, 376p.
Abstract NoteA look up at the night sky reveals a treasury of wonders. Even to the naked eye, the Moon, stars, planets, the Milky Way and even a few star clusters and nebulae illuminate the heavens. For millennia, humans struggled to make sense of what's out there in the Universe, from all we can see to that which lies beyond the limits of even our most powerful telescopes. Beyond the Galaxy traces our journey from an ancient, Earth-centered Universe all the way to our modern, 21st century understanding of the cosmos. Touching on not only what we know but also how we know it, Ethan Siegel takes us to the very frontiers of modern astrophysics and cosmology, from the birth of our Universe to its ultimate fate, and everything in between.

TitleCosmology and the evolution of the universe
Author(s)Martin Ratcliffe
PublicationCalifornia, Greenwood Press, 2009.
Descriptionxvii, 207p.
Series(Greenwood guides to the universe)
Abstract NoteBook provides readers with an up-to-date survey of the current scientific understanding of how the universe has evolved in the almost 14 billion years since the Big Bang. Scientifically sound and written with the student in mind, it is an excellent first step for students researching the science of cosmology and a resource for all who wish to know more about the evolution of the universe. Book discusses all areas of what is known about the subject. Topics include: the large-scale structure of the universe; the discovery and importance of cosmic microwave background radiation; and the forces and particles involved in the evolution of the universe. The book even tackles that most provocative of questions: How will the universe end?
