TitleRoad to Maxwell's demon: Conceptual Foundations of Statistical Mechanics
Author(s)Meir Hemmo ;Orly R. Shenker
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2012.
Descriptionxii, 327p.
Abstract NoteTime asymmetric phenomena are successfully predicted by statistical mechanics. Yet the foundations of this theory are surprisingly shaky. Its explanation for the ease of mixing milk with coffee is incomplete, and even implies that un-mixing them should be just as easy. In this book the authors develop a new conceptual foundation for statistical mechanics that addresses this difficulty. Explaining the notions of macrostates, probability, measurement, memory, and the arrow of time in statistical mechanics, they reach the startling conclusion that Maxwell's Demon, the famous perpetuum mobile, is consistent with the fundamental physical laws. Mathematical treatments are avoided where possible, and instead the authors use novel diagrams to illustrate the text. This is a fascinating book for graduate students and researchers interested in the foundations and philosophy of physics.

TitleThermodynamics of the earth and planets
Author(s)Alberto Patino Douce
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2011.
Descriptionxi, 709p.
Abstract NoteThis textbook provides an intuitive yet mathematically rigorous introduction to the thermodynamics and thermal physics of planetary processes. It demonstrates how the workings of planetary bodies can be understood in depth by reducing them to fundamental physics and chemistry. The book is based on two courses taught by the author for many years at the University of Georgia. It includes 'Guided Exercise' boxes; end-of-chapter problems (worked solutions provided online); and software boxes (Maple code provided online). As well as being an ideal textbook on planetary thermodynamics for advanced students in the Earth and planetary sciences, it also provides an innovative and quantitative complement to more traditional courses in geological thermodynamics, petrology, chemical oceanography and planetary science. In addition to its use as a textbook, it is also of great interest to researchers looking for a 'one stop' source of concepts and techniques that they can apply to their research problems.

TitleEnergy and entropy: Equilibrium to stationary states
Author(s)Michael E. Starzak
PublicationNew York, Springer, 2010.
Descriptionxiii, 314p.
Abstract NoteThis book is an overview of classical thermodynamics, statistical thermodynamics, non-equilibrium and stationary state thermodynamics. This comprehensive work is the first book outside of specialized monographs to approach flow systems and irreversible thermodynamics for advanced undergraduate or introductory graduate courses in thermodynamics in chemistry, physics, biophysics, and engineering programs. Instructors for those courses will find in this book transparent models that clarify a broad range of difficult physical and mathematical concepts.

TitleLaws of thermodynamics: A very short introduction
Author(s)Peter Atkins
PublicationNew Delhi, Oxford University Press, 2010.
Descriptionxiv, 103p.
Abstract NotePeter Atkins explains the basis and deeper implications of each law, highlighting their relevance in everyday examples. Using the minimum of mathematics, he introduces concepts such as entropy, free energy, and to the brink and beyond of the absolute zero temperature. These are not merely abstract ideas: they govern our lives.
