TitleHigh-Redshift Galaxies : Light from the Early Universe
Author(s)Appenzeller, Immo
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2009.
DescriptionXIV, 349 p. 152 illus., 6 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a comprehensive account of the scientific results on high-redshift galaxies accumulated during the past ten years. Apart from summarizing and critically discussing the wealth of observational data, the observational methods which made it possible to study these very distant and extremely faint objects are described in detail. Moreover, the technical feasibilities and physical limitations for existing and for future ground-based and space-based telescopes are discussed. Thus, apart from summarizing the knowledge accumulated so far, the book is designed as a tool for planning future observational and instrumental programs and projects. In view of the potential importance of the observational results of the high-redshift universe for basic physics the book is written for astronomers as well as for physicists without prior astronomical knowledge. For this purpose it contains introductory chapters describing the basic concepts and notations used in modern astronomy and a brief overview of the present knowledge of the local universe. The individual chapters provide detailed information, summaries and references on all important aspects and problems pertaining to the subject. The objective of the book is therefore to provide a thorough introduction to the topic for interested researchers. Students interested in extragalactic astronomy will find important information not (yet) available in standard academic texts. The book will also be a valuable companion text for special lectures on the high-redshift universe and cosmic evolution. And it will be an important tool for research students starting a thesis in the field of extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology

TitleReports on Astronomy : Transactions of the International Astronomical Union Volume XXIIIA
Author(s)Appenzeller, Immo
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionVIII, 605 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIAU Transactions are published as a volume corresponding to each General Assembly. Volume A is produced prior to the Assembly and contains Reports on Astronomy, prepared by each Commission President. The intention is to summarize the astronomical results that have affected the work of the Commission since the production of the previous Reports up to a time which is about one year prior to the General Assembly. Volume B is produced after the Assembly and contains accounts of Commission Meetings which were held, together with other material. The reports included in the present volume range from outline summaries to lengthy compilations and references. Most reports are in English

TitleRemembering Edith Alice M??ller
Author(s)Appenzeller, Immo;Chmielewski, Yves;Pecker, Jean-Claude;de la Reza, Ramiro;Tammann, Gustav;Wayman, Patrick A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998.
DescriptionIV, 147 p : online resource
Abstract NoteEdith Alicia M??ller (1918-1995) was the IAU General Secretary from 1976 to 1979, the first woman to have this responsibility. Many friends, students and colleagues, and others who have met Edith at different occasions, give in this book their memories of her. Her fundamental work in solar physics concerned the chemical composition of the Sun, the time variation of its infra-red spectrum, and its thermal structure. Her interests were, however, far broader than that. She was heavily involved in international work for the teaching of astronomy and for the exchange program of young astronomers

TitleTransactions of the International Astronomical Union : Proceeding of the Twenty-Second General Assembly, The Hague 1994
Author(s)Appenzeller, Immo
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996.
DescriptionXI, 929 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIAU Transactions XXIIB summarizes the work of the XXIInd General Assembly. The discourses given during the Inaugural and Closing Ceremonies are reproduced in Chapters I and III, respectively. The proceedings of the two sessions of the General Assembly will be found in Chapter II, which includes the Resolutions and the report of the Finance Committee. The Statutes, Bye-Laws and a few working rules of the Union are published in Chapter IV. The Accounts and other aspects of the administration of the Union are recorded in Chapter V, together with the report of the Executive Committee for this last triennium, and provide the permanent record for the Union in the period 1991-1994. This volume also contains the Commission reports from The Hague compiled by the Presidents of the Commissions (Chapter VI). Finally, Chapter VII contains the list of countries adhering to the Union and the alphabetical, geographical and commission membership lists of about 8000 individual members. The IAU still appears to be unique among the scientific Unions in maintaining this category of individual membership which contributes in a crucial way to the spirit and the aims of the Union

TitleEvolution of Galaxies Astronomical Observations : Proceedings of the Astrophysics School I, Organized by the European Astrophysics Doctoral Network at Les Houches, France, 5???16 September 1988
Author(s)Appenzeller, Immo;Habing, Harm J;Lena, Pierre
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionX, 391 p. 98 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThese eight lectures have been written up in a clear and pedagogical style in order to serve as an introduction for students to fields of modern astrophysical and astronomical research where otherwise textbooks are not available. The first four lectures cover topics in galactic astronomy (formation, structure and evolution of galaxies) and the remaining four are devoted to observational methods and astronomical instrumentation. The lecturers in the European Astrophysical Doctoral Network rank among the most highly respected specialists, and their lectures have been carefully edited and updated before publication

TitleIntroduction to astronomical spectroscopy
Author(s)Immo Appenzeller
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2012.
Descriptionxiii, 254p.
Series(Cambridge Observing Handbooks for Research Astronmers)
Abstract NoteSpectroscopy is the principal tool used in astronomy to investigate the Universe beyond Earth's atmosphere. Through the analysis of electromagnetic radiation, spectrographs enable observers to assess the chemical composition, kinematics and local physical properties of distant stars, nebulae and galaxies. Thoroughly illustrated and clearly written, this handbook offers a practical and comprehensive guide to the different spectroscopic methods used in all branches of astronomy, at all wavelengths from radio to gamma-ray and from ground and space-borne instruments. After a historical overview of the field, the central chapters navigate the various types of hardware used in spectroscopy. In-depth descriptions of modern techniques and their benefits and drawbacks help you choose the most promising observation strategy. The handbook finishes by assessing new technologies and future prospects for deep-sky observation. This text is an ideal reference for today's graduate students and active researchers, as well as those designing or operating spectroscopic instruments.
