Abstract NoteAt present, there is an increasing interest in the prediction of properties of classical and new materials such as substitutional alloys, their surfaces, and metallic or semiconductor multilayers. A detailed understanding based on a thus of the utmost importance for fu?? microscopic, parameter-free approach is ture developments in solid state physics and materials science. The interrela?? tion between electronic and structural properties at surfaces plays a key role for a microscopic understanding of phenomena as diverse as catalysis, corrosion, chemisorption and crystal growth. Remarkable progress has been made in the past 10-15 years in the understand?? ing of behavior of ideal crystals and their surfaces by relating their properties to the underlying electronic structure as determined from the first principles. Similar studies of complex systems like imperfect surfaces, interfaces, and mul?? tilayered structures seem to be accessible by now. Conventional band-structure methods, however, are of limited use because they require an excessive number of atoms per elementary cell, and are not able to account fully for e.g. substitu?? tional disorder and the true semiinfinite geometry of surfaces. Such problems can be solved more appropriately by Green function techniques and multiple scattering formalism

Abstract NoteFracture, and particularly brittle fracture, is a good example of an instability. For a homogeneous solid, subjected to a uniform stress field, a crack may appear anywhere in the structure once the threshold stress is reached. However, once a crack has been nucleated in some place, further damage in the solid will in most cases propagate from the initial crack, and not somewhere else in the solid. In this sense fracture is an unstable process. This property makes the process extremely sensitive to any heterogeneity present in the medium, which selects the location of the first crack nucleated. In particular, fracture appears to be very sensitive to disorder, which can favor or impede local cracks. Therefore, in most realistic cases, a good description of fracture mechanics should include the effect of disorder. Recently this need has motivated work in this direction starting from the usual description of fracture mechanics. Parallel with this first trend, statistical physics underwent a very important development in the description of disordered systems. In particular, let us mention the emergence of some "new" concepts (such as fractals, scaling laws, finite size effects, and so on) in this field. However, many models considered were rather simple and well adapted to theoretical or numerical introduction into a complex body of problems. An example of this can be found in percolation theory. Abstract NoteThis 6th International Symposium on Thermal Expansion, the first outside the USA, was held on August 29-31, 1977 at the Gull Harbour Resort on Hecla Island, Manitoba, Canada. Symposium Chairman was Ian D. Peggs, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, and our continuing sponsor was CINDAS/Purdue University. We made considerable efforts to broaden the base this year to include more users of expansion data but with little success. We were successful, however, in establishing a session on liquids, an area which is receiving more attention as a logical extension to the high-speed thermophysical property measurements on materials at temperatures close to their melting points. The Symposium had good international representation but the overall attendance was, disappointingly, relatively low. Neverthe?? less, this enhanced the informal atmosphere throughout the meeting with a resultant frank exchange of information and ideas which all attendees appreciated. A totally new item this year was the presentation of a bursary to assist an outstanding research student to attend the Symposium. We were delighted to welcome Mr. Benedick Fraass from the Univer?? sity of Illinois to the Symposium, and he responded by making an informal presentation on the topic of his research. Abstract NoteElectron Momentum Spectroscopy measures the energy-momentum density of the electrons in atoms, molecules and solids by means of a kinematically-complete ionization reaction initiated by an electron beam. The construction of spectrometers and the acquisition and reduction of cross-section data are described in detail. The quantum theory of the reaction is explained and the experimental verification is given. It is shown how to extract quasiparticle orbitals, and coefficients describing electron correlations of the data. These quantities are derived from the many-body theory of the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids. The relationship to less complete methods of investigating electronic structure is discussed. Examples are given of the determination of atomic and molecular orbitals and quantities relating them to the observed states of the residual ion. For amorphous, polycrystalline and crystalline solids and surfaces, examples show the energy-momentum density of valence electron bands, and effects due to electron diffraction and plasmon excitation. The book aims to give a complete account of electron momentum spectroscopy to date. Its significance is that it is a sensitive and experimentally-verifiable test of essentially every aspect of calculations of electronic structure. It is the only such probe available

Abstract NoteThe building explosion during the years 1945-1960 will inevitably lead to increased demolition in the next decades since the lifetime distribution of structures no longer fulfills its functional social requirements in an acceptable way. In the building period mentioned there was a great increase in reinforced and prestressed concrete construction. Consequently there is now more and more concrete to be demolished. Increasingly severe demands will be made upon demolition technology, including the demand for human- and environment-friendly techniques. On the other hand, the possibility of disposing of debris by dumping is steadily diminishing, especially close to major cities and generally in countries with a high population density. At the same time in such countries and in such urban areas a shortage of aggregates for making concrete will develop as a result of restrictions on aggregate working because of its effect on the environment and because of the unavailability of aggregate deposits due to urban development. From the foregoing it follows that recycling and re-use of environment- and human-friendly demolished and fragmented building rubble should be considered. The translation of this general problem into terms of materials science is possible by forming clear ideas of adhesion and cohesion: the whole process of demolition, fragmentation, and recycling or re-use of concrete is to break the bonding forces between atoms and molecules and to form new bonds across the interfaces of various particles of either the same nature or a different nature

Abstract NoteThis book deals with three related areas having both fundamental and technological interest. In the first part, the objective is to provide a bird's?? eye view on structure in polymeric solids. This is then complemented by a chapter, directly technological in its emphasis, dealing with the influence of processing on polymeric materials. In spite of the technological interest, this leads to some of the current fundamental theory. Part II, concerned with liquid crystals, starts with a discussion of the physics of the various types of material, and concludes with a treatment of optical applications. Again, aspects of the theory are stressed though this part is basically phenomenological in character. In Part III, an account is given first of the use of chemical-bonding arguments in understanding the electronic structure of low-dimensional solids, followed by a comprehensive treatment of the influence of dimen?? sionality on phase transitions. A brief summary of dielectric screening in low-dimensional solids follows. Space-charge layers are then treated, including semiconductor inversion layers. Effects of limited dimensionality on superconductivity are also emphasized. Part IV concludes the volume with two specialized topics: electronic structure of biopolymers, and topological defects and disordered systems. Abstract NoteThe present volume contains the texts of the invited talks delivered at the Fifth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held in Oulu, Finland during the period 3-8 August 1987.
