Title | Trends in Atomic and Molecular Physics |
Author(s) | Sud, Krishan K;Upadhyaya, Upendra N |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1999. |
Description | XI, 427 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Contemporary research in atomic and molecular physics concerns itself with studies of interactions of electron, positron, photons, and ions with atoms, molecules, and clusters; interactions of intense ultrashort laser interaction with atoms, molecules, and solids; laser assisted atomic collisions, optical, and magnetic traps of neutral atoms to produce ultracold and dense samples; high resolution atomic spectroscopy and experiments by using synchrotron radiation sources and ion storage rings. In recent years, important advances have been made in the experimental as well as theoretical understanding of atomic and molecular physics. The advances in atomic and molecu?? lar physics have helped us to understand many other fields, like astrophyics, atmo?? spheric physics, environmental science, laser physics, surface physics, computational physics, photonics, and electronics. XII National Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics was held at the Physics Department, M. 1. S. University, Udaipur from 29th Dec. 1998 to 2ndJan. 1999 under the auspices of the Indian Society of Atomic and Molecular Physics. This volume is an outcome of the contributions from the invited speakers at the conference. The volume contains 24 articles contributed by the distinguished scientists in the field. The contrib?? utors have covered a wide range of topics in the field in which current research is being done. This also reflects the trend of research in this field in Indian universities and research institutes. We are grateful to the national programme committee, national, and local organiz?? ing committees, and members of the Physics Department and Computer Centre, M. 1 |

Title | Super-Intense Laser???Atom Physics |
Author(s) | L'Huillier, A;Piraux, Bernard;Rzazewski, Kazimierz |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1993. |
Description | 518 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The rapid development of powerful pulsed lasers is at the origin of a conside?? rable interest in studying the response of an atom, a molecule (or a solid) to a strong electromagnetic field. It is now possible to produce at the laboratory scale, ultra-short 13 pulses with a duration of 100 femtoseconds (10- second) and a power of the order 12 of 1 terawatt (10 Watt). Under these conditions, very high peak intensities may be obtained and electric fields exceeding typical electron binding fields in atoms are generated. The interaction of an atom or a molecule with such electromagnetic fields has a highly non-linear character which leads to unexpected phenomena. Amongst them, - above-threshold ionization (ATI) i.e. the absorption of additional photons in excess of the minimal number necessary to overcome the ionization potential and its molecular counterpart, above-threshold dissociation (ATD); - generation of very high harmonics of the driving field; - stabilization of one-electron systems in strong fields. These processes were the main topics of two international meetings which were held in 1989 and 1991 in the United States under the common name SILAP (Super-Intense Laser-Atom Physics) |

Title | Aharonov-Bohm and other Cyclic Phenomena |
Author(s) | Hamilton, James |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997. |
Description | X, 185 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Aharonov-Bohm effect is associated with cyclic motion. It is one of a number of anholonomic effects, and this means that the dynamical description depends on the current position of the system and on the path by which it reached that position. This book is written for theoretical physicists and covers topics such as motion around a solenoid, flux measurements, and other phenomena involving movement on a closed circuit. The Aharonov-Bohm effect is not only anholonomic but it also connects quantum theory and magnetic fields in a remarkable fashion. A variety of physical phenomena where the A-B phase is a basic feature are discussed |

Title | Plasma Spectroscopy : The Influence of Microwave and Laser Fields |
Author(s) | Oks, Eugene |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XIII, 182 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Plasma Spectroscopy systematically develops the foundations of spectroscopy for plasmas subjected to quasi-monochromatic electric fields in the microwave or visible range. Such fields may be due to longitudinal Langmuir waves or low hybrid oscillations, which are excited in pulsed discharged or by high-current beams of charged particles. Even more important are the transverse fields present in the plasmas of tokamaks, laser fusion, and technological microwave discharges. This book is intended for researchers dealing with plasma spectroscopy, plasma diagnostics, high frequency and microwave discharges, laser induced discharges, particle and laser-beam interactions with plasmas, controlled fusion, and ionospheric and astrophysical plasmas. It describes methods for measuring the field and plasma parameters and discusses their practical application. It also presents new results on nonpertubative analysis of the interaction of quantum systems with a strong radiation field |

Title | Persistent Spectral Hole-Burning: Science and Applications |
Author(s) | Moerner, William E |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | XIV, 315 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Almost fifteen years have now elapsed since the first observations of per?? sistent spectral hole-burning in inhomogeneously broadened absorption lines in solids. The fact that the spectral shape of an inhomogeneously broadened line can be locally modified for long periods of time has led to a large number of investigations of low-temperature photophysics and photochemistry that would not have been possible otherwise. Using hole?? burning, important information has been obtained about a variety of in?? teractions, including excited-state dephasing processes, host-guest dynam?? ics, proton tunnelling, low-frequency excitation in amorphous hosts, relaxation mechanisms for vibrational modes, photochemical mechanisms at liquid helium temperatures, and external field perturbations. At the same time, the possibility that persistent spectral holes might be used to store digital information has led to the study of materials and configura?? tions for frequency-domain optical storage and related possible applica?? tions. This is the first full-length book on persistent spectral hole-burning. The goal is to provide a broadly based survey of the scientific principles and applications of persistent spectral hole-burning. Since the topic is quite interdisciplinary, the book is intended for researchers, graduate stu?? dents, and advanced undergraduates in the fields of chemical physics, solid-state physics, laser spectroscopy, solid-state photochemistry, and high-performance optical storage and optical processing |

Title | Magnetohydrodynamic Equilibrium and Stability of Stellarators |
Author(s) | Bauer, F;Betancourt, O;Garabedian, P |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1984. |
Description | X, 196 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this book, we describe in detail a numerical method to study the equilibrium and stability of a plasma confined by a strong magnetic field in toroidal geometry without two-dimensional symmetry. The principal appli?? cation is to stellarators, which are currently of interest in thermonuclear fusion research. Our mathematical model is based on the partial differential equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The main contribution is a computer code named BETA that is listed in the final chapter. This work is the natural continuation of an investigation that was presented in an early volume of the Springer Series in Computational Physics (cf. [3]). It has been supported over a period of years by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC02-76ER03077 with New York University. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Franz Herrnegger for the assistance he has given us with the preparation of the manuscript. We are especially indebted to Connie Engle for the high quality of the final typescript. New York F. BAUER October 1983 O. BETANCOURT P. GARABEDIAN Contents 1. Introduction 1 2.
