TitleWilliam Shockley: The Will to Think
Author(s)Lojek, Bo
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionX, 224 p. 161 illus., 60 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book takes a fresh look at the work, thoughts, and life of 1956 Nobel Prize winner William B. Shockley. It reconstructs Shockley???s upbringing, his patriotic achievements during World War II, his contribution to semiconductor physics ??? culminating with the epoch-making invention of the transistor ??? and his views on the social issues of his time. The author???s unparalleled access to Shockley???s personal documents provides insight into a colorful, yet controversial, man, and also sheds light on the attitudes of other prominent scientists of that era. Shockley was not only an outstanding scientist in his own right but also a fiercely independent thinker in perpetual search of the truth. His contributions to the field known today as microelectronics are enormous and unmatched. This book explores the critical facets of Shockley???s life, replete with never-before-published photos and excerpts from his private correspondence and personal notebooks. The book also delves into Shockley???s views on genetics and human intelligence. It tells the story of a man beset by an unrelenting rationality, slandered by the popular media, and ultimately alienated by his peers. It discusses his controversial, although sometimes prescient, ideas regarding human genetics, putting these into the context of modern research findings. Today, William Shockley is perhaps just as enigmatic as his work and accomplishments. The author presents a convincing argument that Shockley still has much to say about the issues of our age, and many of his ideas deserve evaluation in the public forum

TitleElectricity and Magnetism : New Formulation by Introduction of Superconductivity
Author(s)Matsushita, Teruo
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVI, 488 p. 319 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a very comprehensive textbook covering in great depth all the electricity and magnetism. The 2nd edition includes new and revised figures and exercises in many of the chapters, and the number of problems and exercises for the student is increased. In the 1st edition, emphasis much was made of superconductivity, and this methodology will be continued in the new edition by strengthening of the E-B analogy. Many of the new exercises and problems are associated with the E-B analogy, which enables those teaching from the book to select suitable teaching methods depending on the student???s ability and courses taken, whether physics, astrophysics, or engineering. Changes in the chapters include a detailed discussion of the equivector-potential surface and its correspondence between electricity and magnetism. The shortcomings of using the magnetic scalar potential are also explained. The zero resistivity in a magnetic material showing perfect diamagnetism can be easily proved. This textbook is an ideal text for students, who are competent in calculus and are taking physics, astrophysics, or engineering at degree level. It is also useful as a reference book for the professional scientist

TitleChirality, Magnetism and Magnetoelectricity : Separate Phenomena and Joint Effects in Metamaterial Structures
Author(s)Kamenetskii, Eugene
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXX, 575 p. 216 illus., 193 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses theoretical and experimental advances in metamaterial structures, which are of fundamental importance to many applications in microwave and optical-wave physics and materials science. Metamaterial structures exhibit time-reversal and space-inversion symmetry breaking due to the effects of magnetism and chirality. The book addresses the characteristic properties of various symmetry breaking processes by studying field-matter interaction with use of conventional electromagnetic waves and novel types of engineered fields: twisted-photon fields, toroidal fields, and magnetoelectric fields. In a system with a combined effect of simultaneous breaking of space and time inversion symmetries, one observes the magnetochiral effect. Another similar phenomenon featuring space-time inversion symmetries is related to use of magnetoelectric materials. Cross-coupling of the electric and magnetic components in these material structures, leading to the appearance of new magnetic modes with an electric excitation channel ??? electromagnons and skyrmions ??? has resulted in a wealth of strong optical effects such as directional dichroism, magnetochiral dichroism, and rotatory power of the fields. This book contains multifaceted contributions from international leading experts and covers the essential aspects of symmetry-breaking effects, including theory, modeling and design, proven and potential applications in practical devices, fabrication, characterization and measurement. It is ideally suited as an introduction and basic reference work for researchers and graduate students entering this field

TitleInterconnected Networks
Author(s)Garas, Antonios
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXVI, 229 p. 75 illus., 63 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume provides an introduction to and overview of the emerging field of interconnected networks which include multi layer or multiplex networks, as well as networks of networks. Such networks present structural and dynamical features quite different from those observed in isolated networks. The presence of links between different networks or layers of a network typically alters the way such interconnected networks behave ??? understanding the role of interconnecting links is therefore a crucial step towards a more accurate description of real-world systems. While examples of such dissimilar properties are becoming more abundant ??? for example regarding diffusion, robustness and competition ??? the root of such differences remains to be elucidated. Each chapter in this topical collection is self-contained and can be read on its own, thus making it also suitable as reference for experienced researchers wishing to focus on a particular topic

TitleAdvanced Physics of Electron Transport in Semiconductors and Nanostructures
Author(s)Fischetti, Massimo V;Vandenberghe, William G
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXXIII, 474 p. 112 illus., 83 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook is aimed at second-year graduate students in Physics, Electrical Engineer??ing, or Materials Science. It presents a rigorous introduction to electronic transport in solids, especially at the nanometer scale. Understanding electronic transport in solids requires some basic knowledge of Ham??iltonian Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Condensed Matter Theory, and Statistical Mechanics. Hence, this book discusses those sub-topics which are required to deal with electronic transport in a single, self-contained course. This will be useful for students who intend to work in academia or the nano/ micro-electronics industry. Further topics covered include: the theory of energy bands in crystals, of second quan??tization and elementary excitations in solids, of the dielectric properties of semicon??ductors with an emphasis on dielectric screening and coupled interfacial modes, of electron scattering with phonons, plasmons, electrons and photons, of the derivation of transport equations in semiconductors and semiconductor nanostructures somewhat at the quantum level, but mainly at the semi-classical level. The text presents examples relevant to current research, thus not only about Si, but also about III-V compound semiconductors, nanowires, graphene and graphene nanoribbons. In particular, the text gives major emphasis to plane-wave methods applied to the electronic structure of solids, both DFT and empirical pseudopotentials, always paying attention to their effects on electronic transport and its numerical treatment. The core of the text is electronic transport, with ample discussions of the transport equations derived both in the quantum picture (the Liouville-von Neumann equation) and semi-classically (the Boltzmann transport equation, BTE). An advanced chapter, Chapter 18, is strictly related to the ???tricky??? transition from the time-reversible Liouville-von Neumann equation to the time-irreversible Green???s functions, to the density-matrix formalism and, classically, to the Boltzmann transport equation. Finally, several methods for solving the BTE are also reviewed, including the method of moments, iterative methods, direct matrix inversion, Cellular Automata and Monte Carlo. Four appendices complete the text
