Title | Three-Dimensional X-Ray Diffraction Microscopy : Mapping Polycrystals and their Dynamics |
Author(s) | Poulsen, Henning Friis |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004. |
Description | XII, 156 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Three-dimensional x-ray diffraction (3DXRD) microscopy is a novel experimental method for structural characterisation of polycrystalline materials. The position, morphology, phase, strain and crystallographic orientation of hundreds of grains or sub-grain embedded within mm-cm thick specimens can be determined simultaneously. Furthermore, the dynamics of the individual structural elements can be monitored during typical processes such as deformation or annealing. The book gives a comprehensive account of the methodology followed by a summary of selected applications. The method is presented from a mathematical/crystallographic point-of-view but with sufficient hands-on details to enable the reader to plan his or her own experiments. The scope of applications includes work in materials science and engineering, geophysics, geology, chemistry and pharmaceutical science |

Title | Optical Properties of Photonic Crystals |
Author(s) | Sakoda, Kazuaki |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001. |
Description | XI, 227 p. 32 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The interaction between the radiation field and matter is the most fundamen?? tal source of dynamics in nature. It brings about the absorption and emission of photons, elastic and inelastic light scattering, the radiative lifetime of elec?? tronic excited states, and so on. The huge amount of energy carried from the sun by photons is the source of all activities of creatures on the earth. The absorption of photons by chlorophylls and the successive electronic excita?? tion initiate a series of chemical reactions that are known as photosynthesis, which support all life on the earth. Radiative energy is also the main source of all meteorological phenomena. The fundamentals of the radiation field and its interaction with matter were clarified by classical electromagnetism and quantum electrodynamics. These theories, we believe, explain all electromagnetic phenomena. They not only provide a firm basis for contemporary physics but also generate a vast range of technological applications. These include television, radar, optical and microwave telecommunications, lasers, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, etc. Now, the interaction between the radiation field and matter is so funda?? mental that it may seem universal and invariant. But in fact it is controllable |

Title | Quantum Statistical Theory of Superconductivity |
Author(s) | Fujita, S;Godoy, S |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2002. |
Description | XX, 338 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this text, Shigeji Fujita and Salvador Godoy guide first and second-year graduate students through the essential aspects of superconductivity. The authors open with five preparatory chapters thoroughly reviewing a number of advanced physical concepts-such as free-electron model of a metal, theory of lattice vibrations, and Bloch electrons. The remaining chapters deal with the theory of superconductivity-describing the basic properties of type I, type II compound, and high-Tc superconductors as well as treating quasi-particles using Heisenberg's equation of motion. The book includes step-by-step derivations of mathematical formulas, sample problems, and illustrations |

Title | Disordered Materials : An Introduction |
Author(s) | Ossi, Paolo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XII, 289 p. 68 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The teaching of solid state physics essentially concerns focusing on crystals and their properties. We study crystals and their properties because of the simple and neat results obtained from the analysis of a spatially periodic system; this is why the analysis can be made considering a small set of atoms that represent the whole system of many particles. In contrast to the formal neat approach to crystals, the study of struc?? turally disordered condensed systems is somewhat complicated and often leads to relatively imprecise results, not to mention the experimental and computational effort involved. As such, almost all university textbooks, in?? cluding the advanced course books, only briefly touch on the physics of amor?? phous systems. In any case, both the fundamental aspect and the ever wider industrial applications have given structurally disordered matter a role that should not be overlooked. The study of amorphous solids and their structure, stability and properties is a vibrant research branch; it is difficult to imagine how any physicist, chemist or engineer who has to deal with materials could possibly ignore this class of systems. The author of Disordered Matter - an Introduction uses this course book at the Politecnico in Milan, Italy. Collecting the material for the course proved no mean task, leading him to have to prepare ad hoc didactic material. The continual exchange between teacher and student has led to the current version of the book |

Title | Electronic Defect States in Alkali Halides : Effects of Interaction with Molecular Ions |
Author(s) | Dierolf, Volkmar |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XII, 196 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book deals with the mutual interaction and energy transfer between electronic defect states of F centers and defect ions (e.g. rare earth elements) and neighbouring molecular defects (OH-, CN-) in alkali halides. These model defect systems exhibit a very intriguing and ambiguous character because they behave like isolated defects in one instance but like supermolecules in others. The text gives an overview of the topic and discusses possible applications. It covers a wide range of spectroscopic methods applied to the systems and reviews several approaches for their theoretical interpretation. It includes more than 100 illustrations, figures and tables as well as many previously unpublished results. This book provides a valuable resource for further studies into this and related fields |

Title | Interactive Dynamics of Convection and Solidification |
Author(s) | Ehrhard, Peter;Riley, David S;Steen, Paul H |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2001. |
Description | XII, 272 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Crystal growth, casting, soldering, welding, high-energy surface treatment, nuclear safety systems and geophysical flows are just a few examples where solidification and convection occur together. These processes are interactive on micro- and macroscales: flow affects the distribution of heat and species and hence the freezing process, while solidification evolves flow boundaries, as in crusting, for example, and hence can radically alter the convection. Mathematical modellers, experimentalists and applied scientists were invited to this colloquium with the aim of consolidating our understanding of such interactions, of identifying key outstanding issues, and of developing new approaches in this important area of fundamental research. Both invited and contributed papers focus on both fundamental and technologically relevant problems |
