TitleGo-to telescope under suburban skies
Author(s)Neale Monks
PublicationNew York, Springer, 2005.
Descriptionxxi, 260p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract NoteThis book does not tell you how to use your Go-to telescope. Your manual will help you do that. It tells you what to look for in the deep sky and why, and what equipment to best see it with. Organized broadly by what is best for viewing in the northern hemisphere in different seasons, Monks further divides the sights of each season into groupings such as "Showpiece Objects," "Interesting Deep Sky Objects," and "Obscure and Challenging Deep Sky Objects." He also tells what objects are visible even in light-polluted skies. So armed with your go-to telescope, find an ideal viewing site or set up your telescope in your own backyard. Either way, you’re in for some fun!

Title3000 Deep-sky objects: An Annotated Calalogue
Author(s)Ted Aranda
PublicationNew York, Springer, 2012.
Descriptionxii, 563p.
Series(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Abstract Notehe Annotated Catalog of 3,000 Deep-Sky Objects is a record of the most extensive and systematic visual survey of the sky done in modern times. The 3,000 deep-sky objects listed contain short descriptions of what these objects look like in the author’s powerful binocular telescope. Objects in the book are organized by position for easy identification of unknown targets. Full indexes by catalog numbers and names allow searches for specific objects. Descriptions of objects are better than photographs for identifying deep-sky objects because the visual appearance never matches the photographic image. Nor are sketches entirely satisfactory because there is a strong unconscious tendency to draw what the observer remembers from photographs of objects. Compared to other astronomical guidebooks this book contains by far the largest number of objects viewed through a 10- to 14-inch telescope and is a ‘must-have’ for serious amateur and professional observers.

TitleObserving and cataloguing nebulae and star clusters: From herschel to dreyer's new general catalogue
Author(s)Steinicke Wolfgang
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2010.
Descriptionxi, 648p.
Abstract NoteThe New General Catalogue, originally created in 1888, is the source for referencing bright nebulae and star clusters, both in professional and amateur astronomy. With 7840 entries, it is the most-used historical catalogue of observational astronomy, and NGC numbers are commonly used today. However, the fascinating history of the discovery, observation, description and cataloguing of nebulae and star clusters in the nineteenth century has largely gone untold, until now. This well-researched book is the first comprehensive historical study of the NGC, and is an important resource to all those with an interest in the history of modern astronomy and visual deep-sky observing. It covers the people, observatories, instruments and methods involved in nineteenth-century visual deep-sky observing, as well as prominent deep-sky objects. The book also compares the NGC to modern object data, demonstrating how important the NGC is in observational astronomy today.
