TitleAssessment and Mitigation of Asteroid Impact Hazards : Proceedings of the 2015 Barcelona Asteroid Day
Author(s)Trigo-Rodr??guez, Josep M;Gritsevich, Maria;Palme, Herbert
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionX, 256 p. 65 illus., 31 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume is a compilation of the research presented at the International Asteroid Day workshop which was celebrated at Barcelona on June 30th, 2015. The proceedings discuss the beginning of a new era in the study and exploration of the solar system???s minor bodies. International Asteroid Day commemorates the Tunguska event of June 30th, 1908. The workshop???s goal was to promote the importance of dealing proactively with impact hazards from space. Multidisciplinary experts contributed to this discussion by describing the nature of comets and asteroids along with their offspring, meteoroids. New missions to return material samples of asteroids back to Earth such as Osiris-REx and Hayabusa 2, as well as projects like AIM and DART which will test impact deflection techniques for Potentially Hazardous Asteroids encounters were also covered. The proceedings include both an outreach level to popularize impact hazards and a scientific character which covers the latest knowledge on these topics, as well as offering proposals of promising new techniques that will help gain new insights of the properties of these challenging bodies by studying meteoroids and meteorites. Asteroids, comets, meteoroids and meteorites are introduced with descriptions of their nature, origin, and solar system pathways

TitleAstromineralogy
Author(s)Henning, Thomas
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionIX, 281 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAstromineralogy deals with the science of gathering mineralogical information from the astronomical spectroscopy of asteroids, comets and dust in the circumstellar environments in general. It is only recently, however, that this field has received a tremendous boost with the reliable identification of minerals by the Infrared Space Observatory. This book is the first comprehensive and coherent account of this exciting field. Beyond addressing the specialist in the field, the book is intended as a high-level but readable introduction to astromineralogy for both the nonspecialist researcher and the advanced student

TitleProperties of Complex Inorganic Solids 2
Author(s)Meike, Annemarie;Gonis, A;Turchi, Patrice E.A;Rajan, Krishna
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2000.
DescriptionXI, 527 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe triennial International Alloy Conferences (lACs) aim at the identification and promotion of the common elements developed in the study, either experimental, phenomenological, or theoretical and computational, of materials properties across materials types, from metals to minerals. To accomplish this goal, the lACs bring together scientists from a wide spectrum of materials science including experiment, theory, modeling, and computation, incorporating a broad range of materials properties. The first lAC, lAC-I, took place in Athens, Greece, June 16-21, 1996. The present volume of proceedings contains the papers presented at IAC-2, that took place in Davos, Switzerland, August 8-13, 1999. The topics in this book fall into several themes, which suggest a number of different classification schemes. We have chosen a scheme that classifies the papers in the volume into the categories Microstructural Properties; Ordering, Kinetics and Diffusion; Magnetic Properties and Elastic Properties. We have juxtaposed apparently disparate of revealing the dynamic character approaches to similar physical processes, in the hope of the processes under consideration. We hope this will invigorate new kinds of discussion and reveal challenges and new avenues to the description and prediction of properties of materials in the solid state and the conditions that produce them

TitleOrientations and Rotations : Computations in Crystallographic Textures
Author(s)Morawiec, Adam
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionX, 200 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book is about mathematical and computational foundations of texture analysis. Numerical techniques are indispensable in texture analysis, so the book is primarily addressed to researchers and students using these techniques in practice. Orientations and Rotations is very different from other books on textures in its content and focal point. Major part of the book is devoted to orientations and rotations in general. Opening chapters contain an extensive and thorough introduction to rotations in three dimensions (including parameterizations and geometry of the rotation space). Further chapters are also general but they will be of interest for readers dealing with orientations of symmetric objects. This subject is essential for crystallographic textures since most crystal structures are symmetric. The final chapters concern more practical aspects of textures (such as the determination of orientations from diffraction patterns and the calculation of effective elastic properties of polycrystals). The book will be of interest for scientists working on plasticity, grain boundaries, recrystallisation, grain growth, and numerous other issues in which textures must be taken into account. Because of the extensive parts on rotations in general, the book can be valuable for everyone dealing with rotations

TitleFrom Dust to Terrestrial Planets : Proceedings of an ISSI Workshop, 15???19 February 1999, Bern, Switzerland
Author(s)Benz, Willy;Kallenbach, R;Lugmair, G??nter
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000.
DescriptionX, 423 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe workshop "From Dust to Terrestrial Planets" was initiated by a working group of planetary scientists invited to ISSI by Johannes Geiss in November 1997. The group split to focus on three topics, one of which was the history of the early solar system, including the formation of the terrestrial planets in the inner solar system. Willy Benz, Gunter Lugmair, and Frank Podosek were invited to convene planetary scientists, astrophysicists, and cosmochemists to synthesize the current knowledge on the origin and evolution of our inner planetary system. The convenors raised the interest of scientists from all over the world in the detailed assessment of the available astronomical, chronological, geochemical and dynamical constraints of the first period of inner solar system evolution. In partic?? ular, this included appraisal of the newest results from astronomical observations by the Hubble Space Telescope, the Infrared Space Observatory, and other space and ground-based facilities of solar-like systems and nebular disks, possibly repre?? senting early stages of the solar accretion disk and planet formation. At the same time, the current models of the origin, evolution, transport, and accretion processes of circum stellar disks were presented. This included the new insights provided by the recent discovery of extrasolar giant planets, which were considered insofar as they are relevant to the overall dynamics of the inner part of the solar system

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionIX, 329 p. 111 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAstromineralogy deals with the science of gathering mineralogical information from the astronomical spectroscopy of asteroids, comets and dust in the circumstellar environments in general. This field has received a tremendous boost with the reliable identification of minerals by the Infrared Space Observatory. The first edition of this book, published in 2003, was the first comprehensive and coherent account of this exciting field. Data obtained in the meantime with the Spitzer Infrared Space Telescope, the stardust mission to the comet 81P / Wild 2, and with the Cassini mission, together with progress in ground-based observations and laboratory astrophysics form the basis for this updated and widely extended second edition.Beyond addressing the specialist in the field, the book is intended as a high-level but readable introduction to astromineralogy for both the nonspecialist researcher and the advanced student

TitleHigh-Pressure Crystallography : From Fundamental Phenomena to Technological Applications
Author(s)Dera, Przemyslaw;Boldyreva, Elena
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2010.
DescriptionXVI, 612 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is devoted to the theme of crystallographic studies at high pressure, with emphasis on the phenomena characteristic to the compressed state of matter, as well as experimental and theoretical techniques used to study these phenomena. As a thermodynamic parameter, pressure is remarkable in many ways. In the visible universe its value spans over sixty orders of magnitude, from the non-equilibrium pressure of hydrogen in intergalactic space, to the kind of pressure encountered within neutron stars. In the laboratory, it provides the unique possibility to control the structure and properties of materials, to dramatically alter electronic properties, and to break existing, or form new chemical bonds. This agenda naturally encompasses elements of physics (properties, structure and transformations), chemistry (reactions, transport), materials science (new materials) and engineering (mechanical properties); in addition it has direct applications and implications for geology (minerals in deep Earth environments), planetary sciences, biology and medicine
